Hyundai is positioning itself as one of the leaders in electric vehicle manufacturing, adding another EV to its lineup with the Ioniq 6. Sharing a platform with the Genesis GV60, Kia EV6, and Hyundai Ioniq 5, we share our first impressions of this all-electric sedan, including its unique styling, EV performance, driving dynamics, range, and how it stacks up to competitors like Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4. We also discuss whether a flat tire sealant kit is an acceptable and safe alternative to run-flat tires or a dedicated spare.

The IONIQ 6 is extremely aerodynamic and efficient. I think its elegant and purposeful. Looks amazing in red 😊

Coworker just bought a red IONIQ 6. It should be shipped from OK to Houston next week. They are in short supply.

With the exception of the rear. They made the roof and trunk too short and the battery pack cuts into the trunk making cargo space too small and rear headroom too low. The Model 3 has more than double the cargo capacity (22.9 vs 11.2 cu ft). The melted rear looked bad on the Infiniti J30, and this is even worse. Hopefully the second generation won't look like a melted jellybean.
I am a Tesla Model 3 owner. Really appreciate Hyundai. Like both the Ioniq 5 and the 6. What’s being left out on the conversation on styling, is range. The Ioniq 6 has a longer range than the the 5, because of it’s low aerodynamic drag. Which is as a result of the styling.

I love the higher efficiency. Energy efficiency is a major factor when I choose an EV. I currently drive a Model 3.

I like the look, it’s kind of retro.
A company finally has the guts to put out a very sleek, aerodynamic design, and this guy says it looks like s suppository. WTF? If it looked like everything else on the market, he would probably complain that had boring styling. I think the Ioniq 6 is gorgeous.

The rear is so ugly. Whatever fraction of a mile more range they got wasn't worth the decimated rear passenger area and cargo capacity. 11.2 cu ft of cargo is unacceptable. The Model 3 has more than double the cargo capacity (22.9 cu ft).

The new microphones make a big difference. Superb sound quality!
We are getting to the point where non homeowners are buying EVs so charging is even more of an issue than you might think.

So true. I am one of those people. I’ve had my Kia EV6 for about 8 months now and live in an apartment that does not have access to a charger so I’m having to always go out in the public and it’s been a challenge thus far since more and more EVs are out and using my local chargers.

My condo building is looking into letting owners add chargers to their parking places. If approved it’ll be a big retrofit project and it’ll cost up to $10K per space - the major cost is the copper cables that run from the panel across the garage to each space. They’re saying that adjacent spaces can go in together and save a lot by sharing a single cable.
Experience and older age can make a difference. Whenever I travel I carry an electric air pump that connects to the battery, I carry a breaker bar with a socket that fits my lug nuts, I have an air gauge, I check the air pressure on all the tires before a road trip including the spare, and I know enough to not change a tire on the side of a road that has traffic speeding by inches away. If I have to I’ll drive down the road or shoulder until I get to an off ramp and if I ruin a wheel so what, it’s better than being run into, which seems to happen often enough. If I had any passengers I would also have them get away from the vehicle and the road. There’s too many people (and vehicles) today to take a chance.
I disagree with John about the spare tire. I live in suburb/urban area & 19" wheels don't like pot holes or curbs. My sister leased the exact same car (a Accord touring hybrid) & I insisted Honda install
The elephant in the room is the charging locations , women absolutely hate this. The back of Walmarts among others, unlit,or low light, you get the idea, I was this close to getting my wife a I6 and she said nope, not unless charging stations are similar to gas station setups.
Nice job moderating and staying on focus, and I liked the 5 vs 6 question. 👍
You asked about the boom mics. Personally I do not believe they improve things enough to be worth the distraction. Just IMHO. I have been there, and they are a distraction. Like the Ioniq 6, but would buy the 5 instead. “Would” because my cheap 2020 Bolt EV has been performing perfectly since 12/2020. Nothing to do but rotate the tyres and change the cabin filter.

Very distracting. I keep thinking an alien under the table is about to grab them.
Can't believe Gabe says run-flat tires are no problem. They are notoriously problematic.
purchased ionic5 4/12/22, died at dealership service drive 3/17/23, 24692 miles, parts backordered, integrated charge controller+30 amp fuse due in 06----07/23 timeframe, under warranty
A spare tire is essential, I think. I drive a Mustang which has a spare...made sure to order the car with one. My rims have been damaged 3 times necessitating them being taken off and repaired, sometimes having to wait a week. Try that with a runflat and no spare.
The sound is great, good investment in audio gear.

some would say it was a "sound" investment
Really like the new intro Music. Seems update the stream making it feel more sophisticated.
Audio sounds great!
You guys go on about the styling without mentioning the 0.21 coefficient of drag, which is the driving factor behind the overall shape of the car.
Vibes of Citroen in the back
I watched every episode , superior sound now good move!
What Brand and model number are those mics? They would great.
You guys are nuts on the spare. One flat and you are screwed waiting for outside help to come. AAA comes and you have no spare to put on the car so it is FLAT BED TIME to a tire store if open on a Sunday afternoon. Next it is UBER home. Two days later, the tire store orders you special 19 inch tire and your three day fiasco is over! Buy the temp spare and check the pressure. And the fix a flat kits usually go bad in about two years of use. And the dealer cost is crazy.
I like the front design, reminds me of the early 90s retro-futuristic... however the rear end is a bit polarizing. But in the big picture, this vehicle is different, it has one of the most aerodynamic design and very efficient in range. Its better to have some options out there than that other "boring" same car...

Sedans are a dying breed so they have to be great to sell. Other than the better visibility, people buy SUVs for the interior and cargo space. The rear of the Ioniq 6 is a fail. The Model 3 has more than double the cargo capacity (22.9 cu ft) and that overly sloped rear is to blame. Plus, it's ugly
The styling is for lowering coefficient of drag period. It's how it can get 360 miles out of its batteries. Otherwise it wouldn't.
Not a big fan of the mic setup visually. Might be better if they could make them come out of the table from a place in the middle. Just looks ridiculously industrial for your otherwise casual setting.
How long before it spontaneously ignites?
Is there any benefit of one pedal driving over a good adaptive cruise or super cruise and auto braking system? My last few dailies have had those along with lane keep assist and my SO's has rear auto braking in addition to the others. Most days I do zero pedal driving between home and the destination, only using the brake to put the car in drive and park and the gas to get up to 20mph (32kph) to activate cruise. Why would anyone care about or prefer one pedal driving when those other systems are so reliable?
I'm old enough to remember full size spares & changing them. I'm willing to risk just carrying a can of Fix-A-Flat or the wait for AAA over the work & risk changing a tire at the side of the road. If you do have a full size spare you can avoid it going bad or some other malody by including it in your regular tire rotation.

Yea I've heard so many people say they went to use their spare and it was flat. People want them but use them so infrequently that they aren't even good when they need it. I started carrying a fix a flat kit as well as a can of sealant. Otherwise I can call roadside.
I haven't seen one in the flesh, but to me the Ioniq 6 is stunning! It reminds me of cars like the Tatra 603 and, together with cars like the Mercedes EQE sedan, seems to initiate a new age of streamlining. I'm not sure why people object to its rear end, when that rear end looks like a Porsche 911, surely one of the most beautiful cars ever. It will definitely be on our shortlist when we need to replace our car.
The fix a flat goop ruins the TPMS sensor which isn’t cheap. I like a spare.
It’s annoying that the camera side mirror system is not available in the US as the Ionic 6 dash is obviously built to accommodate the screens and looks strange without them.
Ahoy folks. CR Car Talks are quite good. I drive an ID.4 and think of the off-accelerator behavior like this. In D mode it emulates an ICE torque converter auto-box, just keeps rolling. In B-mode, the coast down emulates a manual in an upper gear. Coast down is up to 1/8th G and is continuously modulated using the accelerator. Very much like the GTI DSG without the sound track.

I drive B mode around town and D mode on road trips. Or let Otto have the throttle. Adaptive cruise is excellent.
Odd the conversation 11:35 about charging when Tesla has just added magic dock for non-Tesla charging and many right in the range of Consumer Reports HQ.
If you call roadside assistance, they will safely put on your spare for you. So that takes care of the safety aspect of changing a tire. But if you don't carry a spare tire at all, who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters? 👻
Watching from Denmark. A soon to be an I6 owner. A little comment regarding Tesla's supercharger network. I don't know how things are where you are, but here in Europe, Elon has opened the supercharger network to everyone. So you could charge your Hyundai/Kia EV on Tesla's supercharger network. Loving your talk about the I6. About the button placement. Personally it's a non-issue. Buttons in the centre console are quickly learned. And sure, the mirror adjustment placement is odd, but honestly, how often do you adjust your wing mirrors?
Those mic stands should be folded to where they are parallel with the table. They are kind of distracting
Reminds me of the old Buick Riviera.
Flat tire pump-up kits do help you when fire falue involves the sidewll or close to kit! Also, I do not trust claims that current kits do not cause costly damage to the TPMS sensors! Even though I take care to see to it that the spare does not become past dated, I will still use my AAA membership to have the tire change done for me. On a weekend and late at night, the availability of a spare, even if it is just a nonut type, will keep me from being stranded!
Love the show, listen every week. I gotta say those mic stands are a monstrosity. Sound quality was excellent though. And Jon, what time zone is 11 o'clock in the afternoon. Anyway, thanks for being informative AND entertaining!

LOL did he say 11 o'clock in the afternoon? 😂
The majority of people can't afford these massive high prices-this vehicle won't qualify for the tax credit-made in Korea.
With all the audio testing Consumer Reports couldn't find an appropriate yet professional quality mic setup for talking cars?
This is a surprisingly good review. I think it took you guys a little while to understand what it’s really like to live with an electric vehicle and the advantages of reliability in a charge net work, but also the balance that a charge Netwerk provides versus charging at home. Tesla is a weird dichotomy of future verses now. Anyone in technology will tell you not to buy a product based on promises of future features. They may never come, or may have too much of anything buggy problem when they do. Teslas have the best charging networks by far right now making them a no-brainer choice for anyone who does have range anxiety for Enjoys going on road trips. However, they are also quite enticing for the person who believes that their car definitely will gain certain features over time. All other car makers are really good at deploying. Good features now that will probably not get better over time, but have a real Promise in their ability to charge on better networks someday.
Hey TC, thanks for all your work, love the videos. Jon's objections to the lack of wipers always makes me laugh. Just turn on the rear defroster and it will clear the back window, unless you're driving in a downpour i suppose. lol Personally i love the Ioniq 6 styling, although i agree on the point that real button controls are far better than capacitive ones. Bring back the buttons!
@hondajohn6948
Жыл бұрын
in areas that apply brine and salt, the defroster is not adequate. A wiper is needed to clear the brine. This is a big issues for people living in snow belt and skiers
It's so funny to hear Gabe denigrate Tesla controls and sporty handling. I wouldn't want anything else. I love the fact that Tesla doesn't pay for advertising.
The car has good aesthetics, the microphone stands on the other hand...
You should not be using condenser cardioid microphones. They are too sensitive. Please use the industry standard for scores of years, the Heil PR 40 dynamic microphone. You orient them so you speak across (above, below, or beside) them instead of into them.
@sprague49
Жыл бұрын
The Shure SM 7B's they are using are dynamic mics not condensers. They are also a broadcast industry standard.
Weird and odd? Guys, I think you don't know what you are talking about. Amazing design car.
Why was the host getting so agitated when the model 3 is mention ?
It's seems very odd to me that you wouldn't mention that none of the Hyundias or Kias are currently eligible for the Federal tax credit. Reducing the effective cost of ownership by $7,500 or even $3,750 is substantial and another reason beyond the Supercharger network why you might want to choose a Model 3 or Y.
Tesla dislike comes strong through CR episode. Not sure if it’s corporate stand or personal dislike that makes them criticize the brand at every chance. There was time when CR recommendation had some gravitas. Tesla seems to have broken them. I think Hyundai cars look very good even though I would probably stick with Tesla due to technology and ease of supercharging.
The front looks like the 2004 tiburon
you guys didn't even touch the efficiency of Ioniq 6, which is the major selling point supposedly
WTH? All 3 of you look like you’re wearing shirts from the 80's😅
The IONIQ 6 looks ok (that's coming from someone who drives a 2012 Prius). If the IONIQ 6 had a hatch rather than a traditional trunk, I'd be interested in buying one.

Should the type of EV battery factor into your buying decision: Tesla has cylindrical others pouch type. Are spontaneous battery fires no longer an issue?
@TheAdventureAuto
Жыл бұрын
Battery fires were never an issue except for the Bolt recall. Studies have shown that pure EV's have the least amount of fires. Plug in-hybrids have a lot more. It's never a good idea to have a hot gas engine so close to a large lithium battery.
Audio seems to accentuate mid bass, which is where male voices tend to hang out. Perhaps an equalizer would help. Need to hear what Jen sounds like.
On the topic of spare tires why do most manufacturers place the tire under the trunk floor and with the valve stem facing down? It’s certainly a disincentive to check the pressure when you have to remove the trunk tray and the jack then the tire just to add air to the spare. Engineering failure!
ioniq 6 have heat pump for winter time
If you’re looking to drift an EV..check out the Renault 5 Turbo 3e electric car😊❤
Wish the CR reviews would show the seat height from ground. Can’t love ‘low slung’ cars.
Odd comment about Ioniq 6 exterior styling...in terms of comments, less is more.
Are they talking about the older model 3s or the new ones? I know the older model 3s had trash ride quality. Is the ride quality of the 2022-2023 onwards really that bad?

It looks aerodynamic.
Tesla or Ioniq are priced way too high for most of us poor Americans who can barely make ends meet now. Guess I'm sticking with my Hyundai Kona for a while longer (it's a 2022 Limited gas model).
So, whose great idea was it to buy mic stands that upstage the panelists? Fine for radio, but sheesh!
The rear wiper is coming to the Ioniq 5. My single complaint about the car.
That profile, especially the rear, reminds me of a Merkur XR4ti. That’s not a good thing.
Tbh, I don't like exposed microphones. It looks like there's an assembly line in your studio with stationary robot arms. I've been saying this for so long now. If your format is a podcast like Joe Rogan, then you can do this type, but is not. Hide the mic, please.
Ioniq 6 It looks retro futuristic
Weird in a Bad way, fish car like the Sonata
Changing a tire is not safe for a long list of reasons. Also, there is only a small percentage of drivers who can drive a car with a manual transmission you think they have enough skill to maintain a spare and change a flat? No, they don’t.

Car companies are eliminating spare tires and wipers for the same reason they use "vegan" leather instead of the real stuff. To cut cost. It's not about weight reduction or phony environmental concerns. It's about money.
Having owned a few early EV models charging infrastructure is everything. I mean it’s a 50k car are you really willing to risk not being able to drive it anywhere? Tesla has no real competition when it comes to infrastructure. Tesla May not the best car from other perspectives but I can drive it anywhere and I never worry about charging.
Looks like a old Citroen DS
Monticello, rudely snapping back at the other two reviewers with,"you're jumping all over the place". And "we're not talking about that now". Chill out bro
You guys have done a lot of reviews and this has to be near the bottom for any excitement about a car. 🤔
Porche front and an odd rear
I may be a lone dissenter, but the microphones are a huge distraction for a very marginal gain in sound quality (the prior podcasts we not that bad.). Depersonalizes the production and makes you look like shock-joc wannabes.
Hyundai is always giving customers the choice of ugly and nice looking cars. Remember the catfish Sonata? Well now that it’s gone, Hyundai kept their ugly option in the form of Ionic 6
For a company that provides its self in being unbiased sure looks like they were paid off by Hyundai

Good for Hyundai for the Ioniq 6. Glad they made an EV sedan. But it makes the Tesla Model 3 look beautiful in comparison.
Way too expensive
The Ionic 6 is fugly
What an ugly car. It won't age well
Hyundai puts more R&D time than Tesla!? I highly disagree! From the motors, to the battery, battery cooling, safety features, software, app integration... Is there anything on the Model 3 that's not more fully baked than the competition? For crying out loud, Tesla has the Supercharger network! Tesla's R&D is so clearly ahead of other EVs and it shows in the sheer performance of all their vehicle's systems.
