    Angela Bassett didn't sweep in critics awards, but she DID win the LA Critics prize and that award is pretty high-profile. Plus, the Supporting Actress field is so packed with deserving performances, that many voters are probably swayed by the most prominent supporting role in a film and Basset in Wakanda Forever is EXTREMELY important to that film. One other thing. She's a vet who's been nominated before.

    One stat to remember: Since 2005, EVERY SINGLE Best Director winner has at least been nominated at all 4 precursors. Assuming the stat holds (which has held so far, even with the crazy rule changes), the stat suggests that Steven Spielberg is ruled out as a potential winner since he did NOT make the BAFTA longlist. The Daniels and Martin McDonagh are the only ones so far to be nominated everywhere AND make the BAFTA longlist.

  • @slimnave4846

    @slimnave4846

    True - and I think the main reason why Eastwood was not nominated at the 2004 Baftas was because it must have not been submitted in time as the movie got zero nominations. There is absolutely no excuse for Spielberg to miss the longlist.

    Genuinely the BAFTA's are now irrelevant to Oscar conversation. They have often gone in a complete opposite direction anyway in the past - but now with the longlist rule change?.. It's still an interesting event for film fans, but for the wider awards season.. just IRRELEVANT. They are claiming Fire of Love deserved a director nomination above Spielberg and Cameron. Are we supposed to take that seriously?

    Critics Choice doing their lightning round winners before commercial breaks is like being shot with a paintball gun for each award, and Tar winning was an actual gunshot help

  • @eph6640
    @eph6640 Жыл бұрын

    Sure, Critics Choice predicted the last 6 Oscar winning directors, but five of those races were EXTREMELY predictable: Jane Campion, Chloe Zhao, Alfonso Cuaron, Guillermo del Toro, and Damien Chazelle ALL won Golden Globes, BAFTA's, Critic's Choice, and DGA's for directing. 4 out of 5 times, Best Director is very predictable, but I think this year is more similar to 2019 where it was a tight race right down to the wire between Sam Mendes and Bong Joon Ho. Since it's normally such a easily-predicted category, people are being weirdly aggressive about their predictions between Speilberg vs the Daniels, when in reality (depending on how BAFTA and DGA go), I think it's going to be a tight race without a clear frontrunner all the way up to Oscar night. And I think that's a good thing. It's boring when you know week after week who is going to win each award.

    I think for Supporting Actress Angela is 100% winning the Oscar. Has someone for supporting actress ever won the GG, CC, and likely SAG, LOST the Oscar? She doesn’t need to win Bafta, I see a Regina King scenario where she wins all three of those awards, loses or doesn’t get nominated for bafta but still wins the Oscar. Angela also has by far the strongest narrative to win. If she wins SAG, Best Supporting actress race is over

    Actually there was Lauren becall back in 1997 she won CC, GG, and SAG but end up losing to Juliette binoche at the BAFTA and eventually the Oscar, there was also the race between Maria bakalova and Youn yuh-Jung 2 years ago when Maria was looking like the front runner with the GG and CC which both happened at the same time but later down the line Youn got the SAG and BAFTA which both locked her into the Oscar so we’ll have to see later how the race goes like you said if Angela wins the SAG this race would be over but we’ll see if bc so far there hasn’t been anyone who won the BAFTA and didn’t win the Oscar especially when the BAFTA is the last award race before the Oscar’s premieres Regina king wouldn’t count only bc if Beale wasn’t eligible for a BAFTA while wakanda forever is and her main computers (Rachel Weisz and Emma stone in the favourite) only lost bc of category fraud

Everything IS NOT TAKING editing from Top Gun Maverick. Unless JLC wins BAFTA, I can't see a real argument for EEAAO to win anything except KHQ. The director win would've been more credible here if the sweep didn't show a blatant bias towards EEAAO at the expense of other favorites. Also, Top Gun will sneak in with Adapted. Now that the shock value is gone, giving Tar original score really is a “peak stupid” moment on behalf of the Critics Choice. They weren’t recognizing the sound design or unreleased tracks, they really watched the whole movie listening to the Gustav Mahler rehearsals thinking it was original. I like the guy too, but I didn’t think century-old compositions were eligible for a 2022 awards body last I checked. Then again, last year the oscars gave Short Film to a music video that had been posted to KZread two years prior, so these awards bodies obviously have more wisdom than me.

    I just LOVE LOVE Cate and she's still winning because nobody is at her level this year (nor male or female) but that was just graceless. Ke Huy and Brendan delivered such speeches because they were buried and forgotten for YEARS, not without awards, but WORK. She doesn't need more prestige or accolades to be relevant but these people are having their moment to raise from the ashes and have a chance again not only to work but to be respected... But that's just my opinion

    Beyond "the package," which I agree is really important, it's equally important to look at the films' message - and concede that Academy voters often go with the one with the message they can get behind, regardless of the film's artistry or how it goes about the delivery of that message. Family and/or love and reconciliation have been at the center of the last several Best Picture picks (even "Green Book" *eye roll*). Even if "EEAAO" loses some folks due to its genre and structure, I still think its ultimate message wins folks over in the end. They just need to continue playing the narrative correctly.

    I think Condon wins Supporting Actress. That has better chance than screenplay and I don't see Banshees going home with nothing.

    It’s just sad that Avatar is not going to win Production Design. They literally spent years creating an entire alien environment, culture, animals, clothing, language, vehicles.. It’s going to lose to Babylon? Hollywood is so obsessed with films about themselves.

    All of those things that you listed were created using CGI, motion capture, and green screens. It made sense for the Oscars to give the first Avatar and Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland the Production Design award because both were technical achievements (Avatar more so than Alice in Wonderland) and that's also when the award was still called Art Direction. With the Production Design winners of the last few years (Shape of Water, Black Panther, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Mank, and Dune), it's clear that the Oscars will now award movies that have actual sets and locations that look redressed, or movies that have a mixture of real sets and CGI (Black Panther and Dune fit into this category)

    @@bennettbodnar5531 every SINGLE thing on screen in Avatar is first created in real life by the art production team. Every single character, animal, vehicle, plant, scrap of clothing.. seriously if people had any idea the work those people have put into the avatar sequels. i just hope the academy eventually wake tf up like with lord of the rings and show them the respect they deserve with the final film. reducing the whole thing down to "visual effects" is so ignorant.

    Do you think it’s possible cate Blanchett and Michelle yeoh tie for best actress? I don’t know the last time there was a tie for acting (I believe Barbara Streisand and Audrey Hepburn) but it’s definitely possible given just how 50/50 it seems

    Katharine Hepburn, actually. I think the last tie of any kind was Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty tying for Sound...?

    I believe there is an outside chance(very slim) for Rajamouli for that 5th director spot at the Academy Awards.

    I would say very slim because BAFTA longlist has indicated Rajamouli does not have much support as compared to other international directors like Park Chan Wook and Edward Berger.
