It’s worth pointing out that you can get the Trail Boss with skid plates, 360 cameras, and just about every other bell and whistle you can think of short of something like ventilated seats or a sunroof for not too much more than that one.

The big question for any GM product, especially a new model, is reliability--GM's record in that regard is pretty awful. That said, the Colorado Trail Boss would be more than adequate for most buyers insofar as off-road performance goes. But, for the more difficult trails, the ZR2 would be better, but for about $10K more MSRP. It will be interesting to see how Toyota prices the upcoming 2024 Tacoma TRD Pro. If Toyota is smart, they will price it between a Colorado Trail Boss and a ZR2--some rumors indicate that they may do just that. If they do, Chevy will either have to lower the ZR2 MSRP or lose sales to Toyota. Oh, and the fuel economy of the ZR2, according to the window sticker, is 16/16/16--that's pretty awful for a mid-size truck. Rumors (just rumors, so far) are that Toyota's Tacoma TRD Pro hybrid system may render almost 50% higher fuel economy than that. We'll see when real world data on both becomes available.

As for the truck, well, I would not pick this vehicle for any purpose. Capable, but I agree with you. I would take a different product.
GM made a mistake by not offering the Trailboss package with the Z71 option. Not everyone wants a ZR2 , since the ZR2 can only tow 6000lbs vs 7700 with The Trailboss. I'd want LED lights and heated seats. Just like my Silverado LT Trailboss has. Near the end of the video, you mentioned the G80 vs brake lock. GM does uses both. In fact, the part of the video where you pointed out the stuttering, that is not how the G80 behaves, that looks like GMs brake torque vectoring.
@drivingsports

My point was that the G80 doesn't need to be there if they have good brake-locking tech, since it behaves similarly.
@terrencejones9817

@@drivingsportsI don't know, once aG80 is activated, you now have both back wheels spinning. If this had a brake lock system, you would have one wheel braked while the other is spinning. For all those saying it doesn’t have a locker, it does. It’s GMs Eaton G80. I’ve worked on these and they are a true locker, they engage when slip is found at 100rpm difference. The older ones used in the 1980s would grenade at times because the slip difference was at 200 rpm difference. Everyone gets spoiled now with the electronic selectable lockers now. I know my ZR2 has those, I get it… But most don’t realize that the G80 is a true locker, not limited slip, there’s a difference. The g80 actually locks mechanically verse a limited slip used clutch packs. Oh I forgot to add,the G80 unlocks automatically around 20 mph. Despite not being electronic, it’s still a dependable locker to have.

You caught my attention early on when talking about the three different engines, and that is a huge frustration with me about Chevrolet in general. While I appreciate having options, I can’t even figure out how much a prospective vehicle is going to cost. With most manufacturers, there are a few trim levels, and each has a standard build attached, with maybe $1k-5k of options attached, mostly through packages. Chevrolet, on the other hand, has a vast matrix of trim levels, engine sizes, transmissions, detailed decorative options, that are so far flung that it takes an hour to evaluate a build and I wind up despairing about the process, so I reject them as a possibility, which I doubt is their goal.

The opposite has been pretty true in a lot of vehicles....you'd think after 20-30 years they could build stuff with better fuel economy given they now have transmissions with 3x more gears....I laugh when people do reviews on HD trucks. Oh this new 3/4 or 1 ton truck gets 15mpg...yep they got that 30 years ago with only 3 gears in the automatic and with a 5 speed manual. Course if you are buying an HD truck your last concern should be fuel economy...but that aside, even a lot of today's crossovers struggle to get to 30mpg, and they are smaller than a lot of cars back in the day that actually had frames and V8's. My 05 Ford Taurus will do 33mpg on the highway and around 25-26mpg in town....and its just a plain old pushrod 3L V6, no turbos, no traction control, no stability control, etc to fail either.
Complete underbody protection and switchable, mechanical rear axle locking differential, then everything would be fine.
I wish they had an SUV based on this platform instead of the Traverse.
I just can’t justify spending 40k on a truck with cloth seats and not even led headlights.
Turbo 4 cylinder...with cylinder deactivation lol on top of recent Chevy build quality...

That is pretty unnerving. There is not a single auto manufacturer that has not had reliability and longevity issues with cylinder de-activation. It's a technology that looks great on paper, but is not very good in reality. No one can convince me that turbocharged gasoline engines are going to have longevity equal to a well-designed naturally aspirated engine.

@rockymountainjazzfan1822 I'll SLIGHTLY disagree on the turbo part. Despite the oil dilution issue those Honda 1.5 turbos have been pretty darn good. I've seen a bunch of them hit the 300k range, albeit with a replaced turbo. Of course they're never going to last 1,000,000+ like some of the classic Toyota and Nissan motors. But if you're somebody who drives 50k/year maybe they could hit 500k! You're right about cylinder deactivation though - even Honda 3.5 motors don't last as long with that tech, and in reality they BARELY save gas. It's all a scam - after 10 years maybe you save $500-1000 on gas but you'll need to spend $45,000 on a new vehicle 🤔

@@timflint25 The higher boost turbo L15s found on the Accords are starting to experience some head gasket failures. Stock examples from Civics and CR-Vs are holding up better.
I know the 2000-2022 Colorados with the diesel and 6-cylinder engines could get >250,000 miles on an engine. The 4-cylinder is not likely to and in the 2023 models you are stuck with only 4-cylinder engines.
Laughing the last 5 minutes.. what a trail boss
I can’t believe they still sell new vehicles with Halogen lights. I never thought LEDs would make that much of a difference….until I bought a vehicle with LEDs. I will never go back to Halogens. I don’t care how much I like the rest of the vehicle, if it has Halogens that’s a hard no immediately.
More control for your rear diff locker? Get a Jeep wrangler or gladiator!!!
No fog lights, no selectable locker, no cruise control, and gets worse fuel mileage than 90% of half tons..

I think 18's are too large...16 or 17 would work better, and probably cheaper.

I'm still happy with my Ford Explorer Sport Trac V8 💯🫡.
What does Consumer Reports and Edmonds have to say about the Reliability? I would try my luck with the new Tacoma myself

TFL?? This is real off roading.
The audio volume's too low.
I really like this truck, but I think the GMC version is the better value. For not much more money you get a nicer interior and more standard features. Also, the Goodyear Territory MTs in 285 size are a factory option on this truck, it's a shame this tester did not have them.

In my opinion it’s the opposite. The GMC versions give you no benefits for more money. The z71 gives you cooled seats for like $45k while that barely gets you heated in the GMC

@@dawsongranger4940 Maybe so, I didn't look at the Z71 options. I don't care for the Z71 trim level, I prefer the widebody look and lifted suspension of the other models.
