It pains me to say this after 35 years of bad experiences and hate for GM products, but I really like the direction they've been going with their trucks lately. The new Colorado looks fantastic and has nice equipment. The Silverado ZR2 is sweet, and they're investing in new V8 gas and I-6 diesel engines. Well done GM, well done. To hell with EV tech.

Ironically, this is GM’s pattern. They are run by accountants and marketing “experts”. By the time they understand what the market wants it’s too late and they miss the mark. Example? The best years of the hummer H3 and H3T were in the middle of the Great Recession. They waited too long to build the Alpha versions and BOOM bankrupt. Now they are releasing these awesome trucks….oh the Colorado shared a platform with the H3….hmm if we have a major recession in 2023 my guess is GM will kill off all of these Trail Boss and ZR2 trims because of “low sales”

I feel the trail boss should be able to be optioned like the Z71. I like that you can get a basic off road truck but there needs to be something in-between the trail boss and ZR2. A Z71 with the trail boss equipment would be perfect for a lot of people.

I agree. I don't like major options like heated seats being locked behind the high level trims. My LT trail boss Silverado has heated seats and steering wheel and a bunch of other goodies and it's still below the LTZ (similar spot in the lineup as the 23 Colorado Trail Boss)

@sabin 26 so I got mine pretty loaded with features so MSRP is 49k. But I have a discount and some expected equity in my current Silverado. So mine is estimated to be around 41k after that. And then whatever fees and incentives there might be at time of purchase. Seems like a lot for midsize but the full size pickups are running north of 60/65k MSRP for the equivalent trim and options.
I’m with you. I’ll take the Trail Boss over the Z71, but I’d rather have it in the blue color of the Z71. Thanks for this review of the two trucks.

I love my velocity blue colored Colorado trail boss truck. It came with bigger 275/65R18 Goodyear territory mud terrain tires. It has been easily climbing up forestry/ logging roads in northeast Tennessee up on holston mountain.
If the trailboss had remote start and ONLY heated seats (don't care about ventilated) I'd definitely get the trailboss, but currently I'm leaning more towards the Z71 for those features and for the AUX port

Same - I love love the trail boss look, but lacking the heat seats and steering (i think) and a BIG ONE -- lacking articulating steering wheel led me to Z71. Plus, I'm a sucker for that interior Z71 seat stitching - looks very nice. Also, I'm betting the Z71 gets better gas mileage because of the lower stance and let's be honest - I'm going to use my truck 99.9% of the time as an on-road daily-driver to work.

Pretty good amount of articulation on that TB for being stock.
Here's my take. The Trail Boss is an off-road configured Work Truck positioned in the market for the no-frills buyer. That positioning matches well to Chevrolet's value leader role. If you want that same level of off-road performance, with the expected creature comforts and conveniences, you're really in the GMC Canyon AT4 market. That seems to be the sweet spot for me; the balance of towing and payload with off-road ability in a package I can be comfortable in on 3-4 week long excursions.

That is pretty normal for automatic lockers when you are dangling a wheel in the air. Off road mode on the Colorado disables rear wheel traction control, so you don't get the brake based torque vectoring to soften the engagement of the auto locker. The only auto lockers that engage smoothly without TC assistance are Gerotors and I'm not sure you can even get them anymore (they came on certain years of the 2nd gen Grand Cherokee).
I'd love to have LED's in my TrailBoss. I can't believe they aren't standard across the line. Especially when the fancy screens are available in every trim level.

If you guys get a long term tester I would love to see and old vs new comparison. Get all 3 gens of the Colorado and run them through your offroad trail and maybe tow up the Ike. Do a Z71 from the first gen with the v8 and see how it compares to the Z71 v6 2nd gen and the new Z71 or trailboss.
Z71 for me with the 18 inch standard wheels and AT tires. That being said, I just went to the Chevy build and price and was at 48K for the same features, plus a few more than my 2021 F150 regular cab short box that I ordered and paid a little over 40K for with incentives (XL, 4x4, 5.0 V8, tow package with brake controller, snow plow prep package, BLISS, 360 degree camera system, 3.73 rear locker, spray in bed liner, tie down hooks and a soft bed cover. Ford Rocks when it comes to stand alone options across trim levels). To be fair and completely honest, I ordered the truck just before the pandemic blew up and Ford honored the pre-pandemic build and price when it showed up. If I backed out of the deal the dealer could have sold it for much more. Kudo's to them for honoring the deal. With a 122 inch wheelbase that little F150 will go almost anywhere a current "midsize" truck will and specs out with a 1,785 pound payload. Damn, truck prices have gone nuts in just a few years! I dig this mid size truck and would buy it, but not for close to 50K. Even pricing a Trail Boss with minimal options was 45K. A hard hell no for me on a mid size truck unless there are some pretty steep discounts/incentives. Pretty much why I ordered a basic 2 door truck with my options a few years ago. 10K in 2 years is insane.
Z71 with an aftermarket lift for me. However, I just jump to the ZR2.
Love the looks of the new Colorado. (I guess the are selling at least one in puke yellow). I agree with you that Wheels and tires and ground clearance of the Trailboss is the way to go. But living in CO I’m not going with heated seats, a sunroof, or automatic climate control. Chevy has really gotten off track with their new trim levels.
can you option fog lights with the trailboss? also i'd be curious what the driver side backseat is like with the driver seat adjusted to ur position. finally overall height, the specs seem to include the antenna now.. so a trailboss's antenna should barely fit a 6'10" height parking garage?
I see GM has been doing some work. But if you take the Z71 and add your own wheel and tires you’ll be just as capable as trail boss.
It's got cylinder deactivation it goes 4 3 2 1 0 ... depending on power on demand ... lol I'm glad they used a bad ass 4. Cylinder turbo setup but I'd love a 5.3 aluminum block with a blower in the new zr2 colarado and silverado
Once again Andre’ good job. I’ll admit I am like you, even now I have a 2019 WT 4x4, V6, I found new with all the options and packages available. But fairly disappointed a WT is not available with high/low range, with 16” wheels. As a blank canvas to set up as we wish. As I’d rather put the extra money a Trail Boss costs into real suspension enhancements and not just spacers. Plus there are better tires than DuraMax. As for the Z71, that’s a nice package, but do they all come with off road useless 20” wheels? That requires expensive tires!
Trail boss number one 4 x 4 truck for me someday I hope to buy one good job GM
I prefer the front facia and interior goodies of the Z71 which should be called RST including heated seats 💺 which I love in my 2013 Chevy Cruze and should be available in a 42k truck 🛻, but I love the stance, off road capability and price of the Trail Boss.
Trailboss is where it’s at! Great color choice
I'd like to know if GM improved the rubber boots for this new generation's IFS.... I had a "17 ZR2, and the shaft boots on that gen Colorado were known to tear when off roading.
New body style is a huge improvement over the outgoing model IMO.
I like that manufacturers are starting to make more affordable off road capable options. Don’t need a spec’d out off-road truck

The chevy colorado isn't cheap here in quebec, the least I'd expect is heated seats at least due to our climate and the high cost of the trucks. It be nice to find a mid-size truck with front and rear lockers with some minimal quality of life comfort yet nothing to expensive or with insane tech and prices.
Its rough, I was heavily considering the Gladiator with the ecodiesel because diesel and soft top but the new Colorado has really impressed me. Chevrolet has been doing a lot of things right this last year it would seem with design and listening to their consumers. Now I cant decide on the Trailboss for its rugged looks in nitro yellow or spending the extra money on the ZR2 for its interior alone and lose the 1700lbs in towing capability. Tough decisions while I prepare to give GM all my money lol.
Trail boss is great but really wish you could have led headlights like the z71. With that said I want the zr2👍
The led lights can be changed out later when the aftermarket led lights come out. Not a big deal breaker
Looks like Oriflamme Canyon near Julian, CA. I've done that trail many of times.
Andre I like the towing capacity and capability but what about longevity of the 4cyl ?
Hey, been trying to find out if the trail boss has a wider stance due to different suspension (control arms, etc) or just wheel offset?
The Trailboss as a value off-roader is a great idea because Chevy knows a lot of people are going to modify the trucks anyway. People will add aftermarket bumpers and lights which render the stock headlights a moot point. But the ZR2 will of course be the all-out expensive trim so of course it's going to have all the goodies regardless.

That is true, I’m sure Alpha rex and other brands will create aftermarket led headlights that’ll be better than oem
I'm gonna be getting one of these in the Fall of 2024 and am caught between the Z71 and the TB,. The only thing TB needs is a fog light and were set to go..
What if you get the Z71 for the luxury but then buy the offroad tires and lift. Now you have a trail boss with luxury and features. Right?
