Mate, as a former sailor that bread, chocolate, jam, m & m's pop tart combo thing would have me on a sugar high until next Easter! Seriously though it would be the late 90's since I last had a CR1M but from memory things have improved a bit since then. Thanks for the update!

Thanks mate. Yes that pop tart is definitely one to share, given the sugar overload. Navy has the reputation as having the best mess food in the ADF and from having experienced it, I would agree.

I believe it is a safety comfort zone these packages are created for. If you are stuck in the wild (not in a submarine or ship), A pack of these items would boost your morale and keep you focused. Also they are on the go food to give you burst energy. There is a difference from being stuck in a ship and being stranded in a jungle where you need to use alot of energy.
That is a generous 24 hour Ration Pack. Comes with Fred and a great Racing spoon.
Great vid, TY! It was no easy task to get a few CR1M here, but happy i did. I only know 2 gents with a CR5M

Thanks. Good you got one. I haven't seen a CR5M for a very long time.
Rookie mistake. You can't just use a kitchen utensil from your kitchen to stir up your reconstituted Mash. You need to use the ration spoon so we can gauge it's effectiveness. Also we should not see you boiling water on your stove. We should imagine you boiled the water outside using compressed fuel tabs. Hehe.
Love watching these
MRE Pop Tart was impressive.
Ex Army Reserve here 1986-1992. The Rat packs have improved out of sight. I used to throw away 1/3 of the contents as they were inedible. We got issued packs left over from Vietnam and date stamped 1967. The Luncheon Meat Type I was only useful for throwing at the enemy. One thing that I noticed is the FRED is only needed for the cheese. If they used ring pull cheese tins the FRED could be done away with.

Now those were some old rat packs! Now days they throw out expired ration packs, even if most of the contents are still perfectly edible. I have wondered the same thing about the ring pull cheese, I wonder if it's a case of the can being too small for a ring pull or that the ring pull may fail as can happen.
The vegemite is good for vitamin B and salt also if you are lacking salt. Alot of non Australians get weirded out on Vegemite, but the reason is they spread tooooo much like it is nutella. Vitamin B helps with brain work and salt helps your body also. Clearly not too much salt is good, and your body can only absorb so much vitamin B. Alcoholics require B1 as alcohol reduces the bodies ability to absorb B1 (Thiamine). These are all factors in the reasoning of a MRE. The body needs certain assistance to negate stress, anxiety, malnourishment etc. These packs are designed to assist with not just the food / calorie intake, but the vitamines and other intakes they don't understand. Vegemite and salt are great ways to survive, along with the other items in this pack.

I was speaking with a German Para last week that had been on Aussie rations during an exercise here, he didn't like vegemite but then he was having it straight from the tube. I told him to try spreading it thinly on the crackers, have it with cheese and that it can be added to the main dishes too.
My favourite ration pack when I aerved but would always swap out the spag bol for literally anything
Damn, that's a pretty fine ration Aussies! Nice presentation sir!

Did they ever remove it? I thought it had always been included.

@@keithryanAU , SteveMRE1989 reviewed one in like 2018 or 2019 i think they removed it.. or that menu didn't have it. Either way it is one of the best things about the Australian and I think also the New Zealand rations as well.
"FRED" Is an absolute beauty 👍💥
Army needs to put FRH's in the ration packs they very time saving but do still prefer the old trusty hexi stove

Yes so long as you're not in a rush hexi does the job
pretty decent that

With that “can opener” the war would be over by the time you get a can opened 😂.
You should do a vegetarian mre so I can see what is in them as veggo myself

The Australian Defence Force does not currently have a dedicated vegetarian MRE but there are some menus that include one vegetarian main course. In practice veggos will swap out their meat mains for those vegetarian mains, as well as for other non meat components such as the instant mash potato. Defence has said that there is more meal diversity coming that will include more vegetarian meals, as well as kosher and halal meals, by 2026. My interpretation is that while we may not see a dedicated veggo ration pack there will be more vegetarian mains across the current 8 ration pack menu options. I am not sure what other countries have as I only have access to Australian ration packs.

I don't buy them, they are issued to me. They are not available to but on the civilian market, but the closest you can get is from the same manufacter in New Zealand more details here. portionpackfoods.com/products/ration-packs I will be doing another ration pack giveaway soon so subscribe, and click notifications so you don't miss a chance to win
I've never seen so much sugar in an MRA, I'd be impressed if y'all dont end up with such a sweet tooth 😂
don't have a lot of skjills with ratpacks.
Tuna and Mash 😨😨😨😨🤯🤯🤯🤯👀👀 all kidding aside its fab to see what my son [30's] eats

I know it's not what you would think to combine, and I think it must have been factored in the design of the potato packaging as it fits the required water for plus the tuna. One could put the tuna on crackers as another option.
Who is this Al Dentay person you spoke of? Is he related to Sal Manella or Al Carbone?

Yes we use that definition too
Why do other countries have better tasting rations than the USA? ie this, French, Danish, Russian, Danish, Ukraine, etc. AU is closer to US but tea and snacks and more seasonings.Surprised at no heat packs.
🤔
Our diggers wouldn't be able to find the time to make pop tarts

How are they boiling their water in the field for their Tea? Well if the Australian Army had chosen the British Challenger II for their Main Battle Tank they could be using the onboard water boiling vessel.

Jetboil or similar tend to be used but do rely on having the gas canisters on hand. If you're attached to a HQ with power then electric kettles may be available, otherwise its compressed fuel tabs.

Just ruined the mashed potatoes by putting the tuna in it.

😂 it's kind of a tuna bake type flavour with the potato and tuna. Someone recommended adding Vegemite and the cheese to the mashed potato so will have to give that a try. I have 3 new flavours of ration pack so will be doing that soon.
*promo sm*
If you want sugar coma it's time for your poptart..i think I would be cought by the enemy after that one😂 I don't even think i would like it eather, and that my teeth would melt spontaniously aswell.. I would use the bread with the tuna..and bit of cheese and tabasco and half of the cheese with crackers and vegemite...eating normal mash with the lamstew...🤭 Awfull lot of sugar in this ration..hardly any vegies..number two will be a thing.. and i expect lots of farts aswell amongst the eaters of this menu, Half those sweets less at least...more vgies wholemeal crackers..and a (dried) soupe, some nuts or little dry fruit or some pieces of chewinggum.would be a better option..instead of cookies, and m&m's and condensed milk and chocolate, and candy..i don't understand a can of cheese eighter..it can be packed in many differend ways still keeping shelflive
Half the crap in a MRE gets buried. I have no idea why you try the drinks. Lol.

Yes some soldiers do eat it by itself, especially when they don't have time to heat up hot water, I had it today on it own but definitely needs some salt added.

@@keithryanAU Actually I was poking a little fun at how you pronounce the letter " H ". I suppose every country has a few eccentricities in local pronunciation. I lived in Houston, Texas for almost 30 years. We had a small town north of us called " Humble, Texas . The locals did not pronounce the H and called it " Umble ", Texas . I wonder if the teenagers in Umbe went to Umble Igh School and studied Istory.
don't eat tuna?.. creep.
