2022 Toyota GR86 Review // Surprise DRAG RACE + LAP TIME

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The 2022 Toyota GR86 is the purest no-frills affordable sports coupe on sale today at a starting price of under $30,000 US. With a naturally aspirated boxer engine putting out 228 HP and 184 lb-ft of torque the new 86 takes from the original recipe and perfects it. Gone are the days of torque dip, but the easy-to-kick out back end and razor-sharp handling are here to stay. How does it stack up to the previous generation? And what about the competition… Watch! The fact its 1 second off the Supra, RS3, and FK8 shows how, despite being fun to watch, how statistically inconsistent and pointless the laptimes logged here are. The learning curve for driving an underpowered car is significantly lower than it is for vehicles with markedly more horsepower. No, the GR86 does not in fact run this track near as fast as a Mustang GT or a Supra... it's purely driver competence with a confidence interval of potato.

Probably the best intro yet. While not an FR, I too have an under-powered track toy so I can very much relate. I proudly bring to the track (the DDT at the CTMP) my now classic ‘93 del Sol Si. With a full suspension, brake and chassis upgrade, the little FF 2-seater sports a 185whp GSR swap and Type-R LSD making it a thrill to drive. It corners like it’s on rails and occasionally embarrasses “faster” cars in the corners. However, during open lapping events I find myself running with the “advanced” group due to my experience on the track. Signalling the GT3’s and M3’s to pass can be a bit of a killjoy. Keep up the spectacular work, gents!

But the point is, compared to the 86, the Mopars are bigger and heavier. 2800+ lbs vs 4000+ lbs. If you've never driven either; You can snap an 86 around much quicker than a Hellcat. It's very light.
