2022 Santa Cruz 5010 Six Month Review

Спорт

I've had my V4 Santa Cruz 5010 C S kit in Stormbringer Purple for six radical months and it is truly the illest! In this video I tell you what I like, what I've changed and what I don't like (not much) as well as a few dream parts and mods. This bike is a nimble and playful, 27.5 mountain bike that allows you to ride with confidence and steeze. Tell me what you think of my 5010 and my ideas for the future. Subscribe and like if you want to see more videos like this! We appreciate you watching. -Nick

Great overview Nick. I hear a lot of good things about the 5010. Love all the custom touches and upgrades. Side note, I love that you included some product close ups, you should have also included some riding shots.

Thanks Sage! I agree some riding shots would have been great. Been hard to get out lately without messing up the trails and I didn’t want to show clips pre handlebar upgrade. I bought her at the start of crap riding season, so I imagine the next 6 months will allow her time to really shine! 🌞 thanks for watching my guy!

Sam in the UK here Nick, I have the 5010 in Stormbringer Purple too, S build, which I bought in October 2021 then in December I upgraded the wheel set to Santa Cruz Carbon Reserve 30's with the slightly less expensive DT Swiss hubs not Industry9's and FillMore Valves also a Santa Cruz Carbon Bar and Burgtec Mk 4 Composite pedals - I have a set of the Penthouse Mk 5's but they're still in the box as I kinda like the composite items. I'm 5'10" and 30.5" inseam & I ride a Size Large - I found the Medium a bit too cramped for me on demo. I love that the color is so subtle and seeing people craning their necks to see what it is 😎 I love my bike - and ride it all the time. Keep the vids coming Nick and thanks for the content it's great man.

Hey Sam! That’s great to hear that you’re loving your 5010! It is hands down the most fun bike I have ever owned! How are you liking the reserve wheels? I would love to have a set for my 5010 as well! I have wanted a 5010 for a good while and when they dropped the 2022 in this color I knew the time to buy one was upon me! 😅 Thanks for the comment! I love hearing what others are doing with their 5010s! And glad you like the videos! There will be many more 5010 videos coming soon, it seems like people have really been digging them! 🤙

@@NickandKatieMTB the wheels are a fair bit heavier than the ARC rims - that’s the first thing that struck me when I picked them up out of the box. That said they’re so sweet to ride. I don’t think about what I’m riding on or through and they look exceptional. Nice with the fillmore valves. I changed the front Maxxis Minion out for an Assegai which is 2.5in wide to deal with winters muddy descents. It’s staying on until I decide otherwise. The Santa Cruz bars were a gift - I’d asked for and no regrets. They seem to have lots of compliance but they would at 800mm wide - may cut to 780mm soon. May not though. The SRAM brakes - G2R - are great properly set up they’re all you need and they’re pin sharp. Like I said they’re properly set up and although I was looking to upgrade them to G2 RSC it’s just pointless as they’re good and I use them properly. I added a Mudhugger front mud guard the smallest one which is absolutely necessary over in 🇬🇧the store I bought the 5010 from are Santa Cruz only dealers so I was able to spend all morning on both large and medium demo bikes - took ten minutes riding the medium to know it was too small for me oh and all frames are protected with a full invis PPF fitted FOC and that’s it….so far!

@@sja9836 that’s interesting to hear that they are heavier! Wouldn’t have guessed that but I guess the stiffness is what makes them better as opposed to the arc rims! Sweet upgrades man, the 5010 is such a versatile bike. I’ve done a few little things with mine, but the bike really is top notch straight from the shop. My last bike was specced similarly so I don’t really know what I would be missing if I went for a higher level build kit but I am very happy with the S Build! I’m very happy with the large as well, especially after adding a 35mm stem! 🤙

Fellow 5010 owner here. I built mine up a few months ago, still haven't had many chances to ride it yet due to the weather so I'm still getting it dialed in. I'm 6'1 and most everyone I talked to recommended me an XL so that's what I went for. Right now I'm playing with headset spacers/etc to get into an optimal riding position. Been glancing at higher rise bars as well...

Dope brother! I’m kinda in the same boat, winter here in Pennsylvania isn’t the best for trail conditions so I’m hoping I’ll be able to fine tune the bike now that the weathers starting to turn! I would absolutely recommend these bars, especially for taller riders such as yourself and myself (I’m 6 foot). Best of luck getting your bike dialed, I’d love to know what you end up doing with the setup. And thank you so much for watching! 🤙

Bike looks dope! I have a stealth Mach 6 and am pretty particular with aesthetics. I like subtle colors and little branding, so from afar it's all black with the kaahima suspension. When you get close you can see the rainbow bolts on my brakes and Renthal stem. And I have a rainbow xx1 chain, but everything else, cassette included is all stealth. Even my 240 hubs and Reserve rime have black logos, so you can't tell what it is unless your looking for it. I kinda think it's kinda cool having quality stuff but not showing it off. And I could care less what anyone else thinks, but I like to look good riding, and I like my bike running and looking fresh too.

I just put my shifter on the bottle mount bolts with a simple bracket so you can reach down to shift. Goes straight back on the bars if needed. I also got a dropper with a lever under the seat which works well.

Great review! I got the golden yellow the same time as you. I haven't changed a thing on it except brakes and a new gold XX1 chain cause the original sram chain might of been loose, it was loud in shifting. I also just bought a 2 piece rotor but I'm waiting to wear out my original rotors. I crashed a couple of times at Soquel demonstration forest and bent the bar alignment but it's still running like a champ. Not sure if it's me but I'm putting my weight on the back tire alot because I feel like the 27's are sketchy dropping into rock gardens, not sure if I might go mullet. I'm a year into riding mountain bikes aggressively and feel like I'm still learning. I should probably be wearing protective gear 😆

My apologies, I meant to add brake pads, I changed the original organic pads to sintered metallic. Got it on Amazon for $13 (Truckerco) and my brakes seem to feel more firm and not so spongy. I think we might be heading in the direction of all bikes going mullet. We'll see

Nice review, thanks! Have you tried out a medium since this review? At 5'11" I usually size down and the reach on the new 5010 is pretty long for the large (479mm)... thinking I would go for the medium. Also how do you like the 5010 at bike parks?

  • @NickandKatieMTB

Glad you enjoyed it! I have not gotten the chance to try out a medium unfortunately! If I ever do get a chance I totally will so I can finally squash the "what if" lingering in the back of my mind! 😂 I do have to say I believe deep down the large was the right move. The 38mm rise bars and 35mm stem bring this bike to such a comfortable reach for me. This bike does great at bike parks if the terrain is smooth and manicured, I feel like it has plenty of travel to handle any jumps or drops I would want to attempt for the most part. If I was riding a ton of park, I would have probably gone for a Nomad, but I don't so this suits me well. If you go with the medium please let me know how you like it! 🤘

@@NickandKatieMTB Got it, thanks for the input! Right now I ride a stumpy evo with a 448mm reach and a 50mm stem but I'm feeling I don't need all of the travel for my local trails. I hit the bike park a few times a year (mountain creek) and with the 5010 being a mullet now I feel like it could be a bit more capable and just what I need. Will let you know if I get a chance to test a medium out!

I wonder if the medium would suit your leg length though, you could swap the fork for one with a longer steer tube if the shorter stem and moving the seat forward doesn't cut it. I have heard the 5010 makes a great mullet too. Following.

Thank you! As long as the stack of spacers and stem are higher than the steerer enough to preload the headset then you're good. In some situations like if you're clamping onto a carbon fork you may want the spacer above but with this bike the stem grasps the steerer with no issues!
