This week's First Ride, Chase is throwing a leg over Royal Enfield's option for low displacement adventure bikes with their 2022 Himalayan. With power numbers that are less than impressive will it be enough for him to have a good time on the road? Let's find out on this ROAD ONLY review!

See "Itchy Boots" season 1....she rode one solo from India to Holland. Through the middle east, most of the 'stans except Afghanistan, Turkey, Greece, Russia and many more countries. All while loaded down with her gear, spare tires and parts & extra fuel packs. And given the availability, she does not ride tarmac.... It's a great channel!

I'm from India. I have a RE Himalayan and here in India, this bike is a rage 🔥🔥🔥. Have done 14k+ kms till now in a year and half. This bike is one hell of a machine. Plus, Royal Enfield makes aluminium panniers that you can get from the factory. It's not the best but it's VFM.

Spent yesterday rallying one of these around my mates farm in Ireland. It handles like a 125 off road - meaning it is super easy to manoeuvre and I never felt it was going to fall. Up steep hills it has all the torque you need for a slow pull and downhill you can hop out of the saddle and control it like a mountain bike. Really, it's 10/10 and I collect my one in 20 days, I cannot wait.

Literally one of the most underrated motorcycles in the adventure bike space. I love mine and take it where most don't and it handles it surprisingly well. Ground clearance imo is its weakness while offroading.

Excellent review as always. I bought 2021 model as a first adv bike and absolutely love it. Does well for commuting and is pretty great off road. The price was just right and the maintenance is so easy to do, excellent for backcountry repairs with it’s simplicity. Hold down the abs button for about 3-5 seconds to turn it off the rear only. Tho I wish it turned off front and rear. Power is low but great tractor like torque to get through obstacles. It’s a phenomenal machine, would highly recommend to anyone looking to get started in the adv world. Will be picking up a T7 in the future but will be keeping the RE, just such a fun bike to ride. I hope you’ll get a chance to take one off road in the future.

An excellent assessment of the Himalayan on the highway. I've had my 2022 Himalayan a little over a year and have found it a perfect companion for rides like you've described, plus for the dirt and gravel mountain roads here in Central Pennsylvania. Those were the roads for which I bought this motorcycle. As an older rider looking to downsize on weight it is a great choice. The Himalayan will take me anywhere I want to go. And I love the way it looks. It's a handsome motorcycle and looks great in my videos!

The low horsepower makes sense because the roads in India are not good, and the traffic on them is wild. You can't speed up too much over there or you'll die. However it does make their bikes more characterful to ride. It's more fun to ride a slow bike fast, than to ride a fast bike slow.

I recently had my '21 Himmy brake calipers replaced (RE recall) and the brakes are now the best of any of the 15+ bikes I've owned over the past 50 years. Before the recall service the brakes were good, but now they're great. As you described, the Himmy is like a Russian tank, full of character, and feels like a good friend that will take you wherever you want to go!

What a great review! I love mine as well. Got a crazy deal on my ‘22 for $1k off due to the dealer getting their shipment late in the season. I was torn between the red/black and matte/gloss black. They had the black on black with the factory black hard cases already installed so it was a no-brainer for me. I live out in the western PA country and love exploring dirt farm and fire and roads and for that I feel it’s perfect! For me at least lol. I also agree with you opinion on the overall looks and the dash. Thanks for the great review and keep the awesome content coming! 😎

I went from a Honda CBF1000 (basically a Honda version of a Suzuki Bandit 1250) to a Himalayan this past December, I had a test ride of the Himi at a Royal Enfield demo day in September and just couldn't stop thinking about it afterwards! You have captured it well in this video, despite being a "full size" bike in terms of ergonomics it still feels small and playful compared with other ADV bikes. I have yet to ride another Enfield but if the rest of the range is along these lines then they deserve the massive sales they're seeing these days. Unlike the Japanese and European brands, Enfield can get you a bike when you want it and dealerships aren't gouging customers due to lack of availability. Parts are cheap, fuel consumption is low and they're fun to ride and easy to maintain. Sure, top-end speed takes a hit but in a lot of the world 60mph is actually as fast as you need to go. Unfortunately I think due to the "quality" of the finish and general cheap components these bikes are a bit "disposable", but if you want to ride on a budget you could do a lot worse. Also don't mess with the rear fender! It's there to do a job!

Thanks for the honest intelligent review. It's nice to hear somebody who actually gets the idea of the bike. I get sick of idiots who complain about the top speed. In Europe the average non motorway speed limit is 90 or 100kmph so it does that easily. Speed limits are limits not targets! This bike is perfect for what it is designed for. Speed junkies are always in such a hurry to get to the next place... As long as they don't take innocent folk with them I really don't care 😎

If you can do Ladakh ride with a bike, that bike is a capable bike even for extreme off roading. And this bike was born in Ladakh. It's not fast, but it is capable of doing what a BMW GS1200 can do.

  • @shivraj_sahu
    @shivraj_sahu Жыл бұрын

The biggest USP of the current Himalayan is it's suspension set up. That and its ground clearance. Having done the Ladakh circuit (Himalayas) on the Himalayan, I'd say it's basically a go anywhere do anything motorcycle as long as you don't ask anything extreme from it. It is not a canyon carver, nor is it a hard-core dune-blasting, cliff-jumping off-roader. You can carry highway speeds (in India atleast) comfortably on this, and you can point it at the gnarliest, slushiest, loose-gravel roads and it'll trundle along with ease. The braking issues seem to stem from the tyres more than the brake pads. A quick change into better rubber fixed the braking issue on the Himalayan I was riding. There are some issues to look out for in the current gen Himalayan. Hoping that they get fixed in the upcoming 450 model.

Even though I started out learning on enduros/dual sports, I'm not too heavily into adventure-bikes. Maybe I was traumatized by a co-worker's Teneré I borrowed back in the day and then had to balance on my tippy-toes at every red light I encountered - despite my height of 5'10''... :D In any case: I love the fact that bikes like the Himalayan exist - just like some of the other RE-models, it seems like a throwback to simpler designs but updated with more modern requirements in mind. I really appreciate the fact that it doesn't try to look super modern - I've always preferred motorcycles that had a more timeless look about them. And I think the Himalayan fits the bill visually as it reminds me of very early ADVs like the OG BMW GS or the early XT600/660 Tenerés. All that said and keeping in mind what market it was initially made for: It really could use a bit more power. I think if they either squeezed another 10hp or so out of its current engine or put their ~50hp inline-two into this one, it would make the bike a hell of a lot more attractive. I'm going to get insanely creative and suggest the name "Super Himalayan".

You have to press the ABS button for exactly 5 seconds and let go to turn it off. Also the engine should be off with the dash on.

I've been on a Himalayan and it feels so good and comfortable and my feet can touch the ground and its confidence inspiring ,,, i sat on a Scram 411 thought it was gonna be light weight but dang it was heavy man like so uncomfortable i really didn't feel comfortable at all .there was a reason ,,, the scram was short and the himalayan was Tall ,,, so on the himalayan the weight on the top is light and its kind of flick able the top end weight is light ,,, but scram is not like that ,,, its short and can feel the weight But the ktm adventure i wanna try one

I noticed that this bike has complete exhaust system modified. Do you know why catalyst has been removed? Here in Argentina we are dealing with cilinder issues in BS6 models probably because high temperature. Many users thing that catalyst in this model could be root cause. Do you have any opinion on this? Thanks

I sold my 2014 Indian Vintage (bought new) and went to a 2022 Himy with panniers. Smiles per mile are on par without the hours and hours of polishing. Guess Im just getting old.

11:45 just keep it pressed for 5 sec. What's the mpg on red revs / highway? 26:47...or just a mud guard for rear shock. That thing is naked!

I'd love to buy one, but with the nearest Royal Enfield dealership being out of state for me. I had to go with a modded Dual Sport Dirt bikes for my first bike.

Hey John, looking at the models here in Vegas and a gentleman drove in from Royal Enfield in Boston. He was riding through back to San Diego. He was riding the classic 350 signals. Dude was a die hard. 3000 miles.

Did the dealer have any Euro 5 Himalayans yet as they are starting to be sold in the US.... That image of the Red and Black one you used is a Euro 5. Speed wise your still faster that 99% of how most people pull away at the lights or on to the freeway... well most of the time.

It's not an adjust its a check and usually they don't need adjustment. All bikes epically single cylinder thumpers should have the vales checked by their owners. It's a really simple process!

Call it a Himalayan, but him a'sittin' on it most of the time. OK. OK, fine. What makes me shy away from this motorcycle is this: Its lack of power and only five gears. It's not bad at all for what it is, especially, especially considering the price. However, if Royal Enfield made the same platform with their 650 P-twin and six gears, I'd be looking at it with a lot more consideration. I like the look of it more than the INT 650, I like the dash more, and on down the list. And although I don't leave the pavement often, this would be a better option for when I do -- plus when I do, it's miles and miles away from home, so highway performance means I could get there and back without having to take so many back roads. Granted, it cruises at 70 well enough, but if that were 10 or so horsepower more and another gear, it would be a lot more confidence for the task.
