You need the lights there because of DOT laws. If the trunk is open, the lights on the trunk aren't visible so you need some sort of red light always visible on the rear of the car. Just like pickups and tailgates

I used to work as a quality inspector in the paint department for Toyota and it really opened my eyes to the complexity of paint. To control a near perfect environment is almost impossible but one of the steps we took was to crater test. That's when everyone touches their face with their hands then smears their hand onto a panel and then the panel gets painted. If you are "contaminated" craters would immediately appear. To keep this from happening we were not allowed to use certain shampoos, conditioners, deodorant, etc. Even with all these precautionary measures, problems always arise so it's not uncommon to have "abnormal work" where a vehicle may have to be repaired (seeds, orange peel, scratches, thin paint, runs, sags, etc). Like others have said, even when a vehicle leaves the paint shop, there's a whole other set of variables during assembly: team members dropping tools on the side members, outside auditors being careless and coming too close to a vehicle with non-line approved clothing, or someone with contaminated gloves touching interior parts and not realizing, etc. Every vehicle may not be perfect, but I can tell you, everyday we are trying our best to identify, resolve, and prevent these abnormalities from happening. It's a never ending battle.

Well if you buy a $30k Toyota, you would be ok with some flaws. When you pay 140k? You probably want the best of everything! When you pay 140k for a brand that just made it's first car(model), you are crazy.

Mock me if you must, for being a VW Phaeton enthusiast. But part of the pride and joy of owning one (two in my case), is the flawless fit-finish-paint that comes from having been mostly hand-made in the "glass factory" and I expect Lucid to equal that, given the price point. My '04 W12 was $140K new, adjusted for inflation. 70K miles, pristine 4-seat limo, not for sale lol.

I work at an American auto assembly plant for one of the “big 3”. I’m in the quality department. So much can happen to a vehicle before it leaves the plant. The abuse it can receive. The neglect it can receive. The lack of care given to a vehicle is astounding. Nobody thinks of the vehicle as a customers vehicle. We deal with so many they just become another obstacle in the way to take a “break”. EVERY single vehicle has some sort of defect or flaw that is delivered to the customer. All of them.

If this would be the case for Porsche (Basically the only one of the supercar brands that utilizes factory production line). Just wondering cause I've had my new Porsche for 2 months now and the only flaw I ever found was oily streak mark on the handle of the glove box. Other than that, it came as a masterpiece. Exactly as I have ordered.

Unfortunately for such a young company, there will be fit and finish issues. Just as Jason noticed, I saw the same thing on a display model in a Virginia mall. The inside is almost perfect; very beautiful and expensive-feeling materials. The exterior was not perfect, but good enough for a brand new car company. Their target customers understand this, have deep pockets, and are willing to be 1st buyers of low-volume-high-cost luxury cars. They are basically subsidizing development of cheaper versions ($50-80K) of these cars in about 5-10 years. Their EV tech is impressive, especially the electric motor unit. Very small and powerful. Plus it goes for 500+ miles. I am more interested in their SUV, Project Gravity. Hoping to buy it in about 8-10 years.

I work at Toyota and repainting is a common and encouraged practice. If there's a defect on a bumper and we've sanded through the clearcoat its more environmentally friendly and cost effective to send it into the paint booth again and reuse it. There's nothing out of the ordinary with this vehicle having repainted sections, especially on the body. A manufacturer isn't going to scrap an entire vehicle shell because of a small paint zone.

That one had a full rear light set within the boot/trunk as well. I believe the Insignia was sold in the State as a Buick but I'm not sure if you got the Tourer as well. Excellent analysis on the Lucid. Just heads up, the weird looking window trims are also on the new 7 Series / i7. Look at the Window trim on the rear doors and you'll see it. They used to do it on the 6 Series Gran Coupe / Alpina B6 Gran Coupe as well.

US requires brake lights to be visible and functional when the trunk is open. It’s why the rear taillights are split into 2 different sections even on trucks with a tailgate, you have to be able to see the brakes when the tailgate is down or trunk is open on a car. That car has a solid light bar so it’s no surprise. Audi does this on some of their models as well, there are lights built into the bumper that will function as brake lights if the tailgate on the SUV is up when driving.

My sales rep claimed I was being "too critical" of the cars..LOL. He mentioned that the Carfax was clean on those models, and I laughed at that. When push came to shove, the paint dept. stated they don't have to reveal any paintwork they do on a new car below a certain cost to perform....how nice. Not to mention a story behind a decades-old brand. I would never spend $140K on a brand which doesn't have experience in building quality, Tesla included. These young manufacturers cannot match the quality and class of decades-old experience of manufacturers like BMW, Mercedes, or Japanese manufacturers etc.

Damage doesn't just happen in transit. You'd be surprised on the damage that happens during the manufacturing process. Robot paint errors are common along with paint contamination (dirt, dust, fibers...), paint imperfections with metallic, ecoat drip under the paint...anyways, when those issues are found on the conveyor and the production team can't buff them out they send it to an offline repair section of the factory where those defects are worked on. Depending on the severity of the defects it may require sanding and respray with human hands. At worst there might be a dent that requires sanding down to the metal to pop out and then it manually gets resprayed. After it's repaired it goes back onto the conveyor for assembly and during the assembly process some still get damaged by either robots or production associates. When the car makes it to final inspection they try to catch any new or pre existing defects. If they catch paint or body defects they'll send the car to the factory "paint hospital" for repair before finally getting loaded onto a truck to reach its final destination....then they can possibly sustain damage during transport as well.

  • @thetrailoutthere

    @thetrailoutthere

    2 жыл бұрын

Also, repairs that happen on before transfer of ownership from the manufacturer to the first registered owner don't have to be reported as long as it's not a saftey/reliability issue in which case if they can't repair it they just scrap the whole unit and take parts off of it to use on other units (if still usable). I used to work at a dealership and we would send cars to a good repair shop to get resprayed because they'd get damaged during transport. Since no insurance was involved for those it won't come out in the carfax history as having been repaired.

Hum, I'm not feel'in it.... I have one of these, the GT version in Zenith red, same as this car. As soon as I saw this video and went out to check all the points you brought up in the video. I did not see any of the stuff you showed. I carefully went over the whole car, didn't see the aberrations you pointed out. The door trim being loose is odd because this car's door trim looks a little different then mine and it's solidly mounted, you can't pull it off. I'm not saying you didn't see this stuff because it's clearly on the video. But I wonder, as you pointed out, if something happened to this car and someone isn't owning up to it. It looks like some random body shop person tried to fix the car as evidenced by the door trim that doesn't look like Lucid's. It would make no sense that this fix happened at the Lucid factory - they would have used their own door trim. A body shop person wouldn't have access to Lucid parts yet. So, since my car doesn't look like this - and I picked it up a week ago and haven't been in an accident - I might think that I don't know the whole story even if the owner says they don't know anything about an accident - something doesn't make sense.... You just don't know sometimes....

Relatively easy to make 100-500 vehicles. You can re-paint, etc. to get it right. Entirely different universe to make cars in volume. If you have any issue, you quickly run out of room in your plant to rework issues. Tesla sold almost 1 million vehicles last year without skilled union workers, which is an engineering / manufacturing achievement that is vastly underrated. Cool looking car, but such a giant hurdle to get to sustainable and profitable volume. People also underestimate how good of quality car a new Chevy, Chrysler, Hyundai, etc. actually is. "Build quality" is really just many hundreds and thousands (or millions) of repetitions to continuously improvement processes. Can't do that if only building 100 vehicles. This is likely repainted at the plant, since they are just trying to get the first cars off the line correct.

Or just keep driving my aging W12 Phaeton while waiting for rural quick-charge stations, excellent snow/mountain car -- which the Lucid won't be; as with any EV based on LiFePo4 instead of LiFeYPo4 battery chemistry. I can park my Phaeton at a mountain airport for a week in the dead of winter, and it will start when I return. Unless plugged in, Tesla - Lucid - Rivian - Polestar - legacy manufacturer won't, because they'll have drained their batteries keeping their batteries warm at below-freezing temps. Without Yttrium in the mix, Li-ion batteries deep cycle at cold temps, which they are not designed for, so don't expect 'em to last long in harsh climates. Hence, recommend leasing any current BEV unless mild climate. Lucid disappointed me by claiming the Air could be parked for 800 days at subzero temps before the batteries discharge. *bullpuckey* >cough< I still think it's a fantastic car I'd love to own... or preferably lease. Trust me, some cars have extensive damage. They get backed into, side swiped, things fall on them etc. there is no requirement to tell the buyer about any of this.

Maybe you can buy my reservation and leapfrog up the list, I'll be waiting until at least next year, reservation not required.

@@ericjbowman1708 I'm holding on reserving. Want to insure fit/finish will be satisfactory and in consideration of current economic situation. but thanks.

I'd love to bring my Lucid for detailing to your shop when I get it. And yes, you need the lights in the trunk because lights must be visible when the trunk is open.

I agree with you that no one looks at it that close when they buy it. On the other hand when I paint one they will pick things under the bumper.

The lights you noticed inside the trunk are required by law in some countries. Basically, if you stop at the side of the road and open the trunk, your car's rear lights should still be visible to traffic behind you. Because in this car opening the trunk moves your rear lights up in the air, they had to put rear lights on the inside. This is why most cars will have the red lights split, some on the trunk and some on the outside so that they are still seen when you open the trunk.

Great vid. If the lights on the back of any vehicle move its illegal so they have to have a stationary set. If that trunk was open on the side of the road at night the reflectors might not be enough for incoming traffic travel fast.
