    4.5ft bed is fine for hauling air, like most trucks do.

  • @gpaje

    Pick-ups aren't dump trucks, there primary purpose is towing. The bed is a nice extra, with the tailgate down, there is plenty of room to haul most anything you need. The large cab with little bed has been a popular configuration internationally before it became popular in the USA, because it works for most people.

    Another hypothesis on the wheel marks: I'm guessing they are shipped in stacks with spacers between wheels. Slight vibration during shipping will create similar marks even when spacers are a soft (and uncontaminated) material like polystyrene.

    I'm glad to see someone with a detailed eye go over the vehicle like this. Pleasantly surprised. Gives me a hope boost for my R1S whenever I see it. I like that you did this on your own, no minders, no PR, just "here's what I see". Nice. One note : the gear tunnel doors - I guess what you saw there was similar to the hood of a normal car: you can pull the hood release but it doesn't properly open until you go and use the manual catch (in this case the buttons on the top of the truckbed rails). For the hood that's a safety thing - my guess is this is the same - they don't want those things to be able to pop down while you're driving.

The one thing you did not comment on was the orange peel effect of the paint when you scanned over the panel at 3:22 to 3:29. I would actually disagree with your statement. Because they know the first batch of vehicles will be scrutinized and many will be reviewed by automotive journalists etc they probably took extra time and care to make sure they were as good as they could be. Volume production is where big issues arise because if something's a little off and isn't caught that issue can now be seen on possibly hundreds or thousands of vehicles. Also the fact that they are going to try to ramp up production speed over time means that they're going to look to increase efficiencies which doesn't necessarily mean cutting corners but still can result in unforeseen build quality issues moving forward. I'm certainly not an owner or a future owner but I do wish them nothing but the best.

    Just so you know. Those marks on the rims are from the way they are shipped to the factory. Manufacturers tend to stack them on pallets and usually put some thin foam or card in between which rubs the paint on the contact points between the inner rim face and the outer rim face when they bounce around a bit in the truck/ship depending on where they are made. During a PDI the dealership doesn't normally look too much at the wheels for quality of finish just like they don't inspect the lower half of the bodywork as thoroughly as the top half that is in eye line! It's all about speed and turnaround and the Person doing the PDI can't be arsed to kneel down!

    @Zenkat Well it's kind of the big selling point of EVs is their acceleration, so we got to mention it. The fact that this 5 seater truck can go supercar fast but also rock crawl like a Jeep is quite the achievement that it's worth mentioning. Of course longevity is important, where did I say it wasn't? But it's not exactly something that can be measured for several years. Brand new vehicle by a brand new company, I don't expect fit and finish to be perfect yet, I mean look how long Tesla took and they aren't exactly there yet either.

  • @gpaje

    @gpaje

    2 жыл бұрын

    @Zenkat Actually Doug Demuro tested it recently at the Otay Mountain Truck Trail, which has some pretty tough offshoots but is within 15 miles of a large city center and plenty of chargers. I'm sure there are other areas with similar situations. However, this is the early days of EV, of course it's not going to be competitive or as convenient as a gas truck when it comes to range at this point, but you have to start somewhere. 99% of the owners of these trucks aren't going to go off-roading anyways, but it's nice to know you have that capability if you want it or can do it in your area. If it does what any other EV trucks are going to do in terms of usability, then it's fine. It's not advertised as an overlander, so calm down.

    I would definitely own one and since I currently drive a Model 3, I know 300+ miles of range is fine if the infrastructure is there to support it. I don't think it will get that range while towing a normal-sized travel trailer or if it is fully loaded or even if it has the roof rack acting like a big air brake when loaded. I know they will be offering a larger battery and the charging network is being developed but for now, I see it as a local hauler or camp-ready vehicle if the campground has level 2 charging available in their spots.

    You’d have no choice but to wait a year or two, even three years. They’re building these incredibly slowly. I don’t think Rivian will go bankrupt, but after that huge price increase that they also applied to their reservation holders, they will likely get bought out by Amazon. Their stock and valuation are sure to keep falling from here, as the market irrationally gave them a valuation that assumed that they would succeed and coast towards mass production just because Tesla did it. A lot of people believed that Rivian and Lucid wouldn’t have production issues, especially when execs of those companies were flexing and saying that they wouldn’t and that they have prepared for years. Now, Lucid cut their 2022 production number by 40%, and Rivian is likely going to do the same on top of their insane price increase.

    I’m guessing the wheels were shipped using styrofoam to cushion/protect them, hence the marks on the rims. Constant vibrations and harmonics abraded that pattern into the clear coat.

    If you're ever taken a truck on an off road adventure you will see that the charge port is in a horrible location. First branch it encounters will either rip it off or press the button and open it for the next branch to finish the job. I also feel it will also fail in a minor fender bender or parking lot mishap.

    It's curious that they think of ruggedness in most places but the floor. Even for my sedan, the first thing I bought were high walled rubber floor mats. Though in Rivian's defense, every car maker seems to do this for everything but their "tradie" trim of 4x4.

    The gaps on the doors is common place, engineers design the front doors to sit just a little bit more out to cut down on wind noise and with an electric vehicle wind noise is probably a big thing to deal with because there’s no engine to drown out the noise

    I have seen a couple of these now on the streets of New York City. The truck reminded me vaguely of one of my favorite cars, the BMW 2002. I just retired and am looking for my retirement vehicle. This might fit the bill. One concern: I've heard that front end collisions destroy the "brains" of a Tesla so I wonder if they will have the same problem in the event of a front end crash.

    I'm curious, from your experience do these plastic trim gaps get smaller or bigger over time? Once that plastic starts baking in the hot summer sun (especially in Florida) does it relax into place, or expend and stretch making the gaps even worse?

  • @Robert-cu9bm

    @Robert-cu9bm

    On mainstream manufacturers they run a rubber strip between the plastic and the car. I guess that hides any inconsistencies in gap.

    Not sure about the gaps, but the black plastic oxidizes and fades over time in the sun and weather. Looks foggy or dull and is not pretty.

    Rivian motivated me to pursue electric cars... Really impressed with the interiors, especially 14:45. The initial version of cars should have been evaluated, with many of them being reviewed by automotive journalists hopefully this isn't the reason for slow manufacturing as it would take additional time and efforts to make this work of art..... from a few articles i read online Rivian lost $1.59 billion and delivered 1,227 electric trucks as of 2022.. 😞

My friend shelled about $140,000 for a 2022 Model X Plaid and the panels are defective as are the rear stoplight housing (water leaks in, Tesla sales guys says that happens with Tesla, gaslighting)and the paint job on the driver side looks uneven.

    It seemed to me that you are only applying PPF in certain areas of the truck. Can you elaborate? Would you recommend putting PPF on the entire truck? Do you also do a ceramic coating on top of the PPF and entire truck also? Also, what are you estimating the cost of these services now that you have had an opportunity to inspect the truck and level of difficulty of doing the work? Great video and thank you in advance. I expect to take delivery of my truck within the next two months.
