2022 Honda TRX 420 Rancher Review - 1yr of ownership

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hey folks,
Just wanted to touch base with everyone and give you an update on the Honda 420
Rancher after having owned and ridden it for the past year. I’d say my opinion of it is pretty well 90% positive still. There’s a few little things that I wouldn’t quite give it full marks on, but nothing’s been a deal breaker and I’ve used it both on the farm and out hunting and I’ve had no major issues with it. Stock suspension and tires have worked great under load and in the mud/snow, so I haven’t felt the need to change any of those components. Stock headlights weren’t quite up to par for me, so I did swap those out and add some after market LED pods and a light bar as well, but otherwise that’s pretty well it. I did add a 4000lb winch and a silencer muffler to make it a little nicer on the ears for longer rides on it, and because I’m out alone a fair bit, so not having a winch is a no-go for me. I have gotten quite a few questions about the shift out of reverse, and I can say it’s definitely gotten noticeably better, but does still stick and clunk a bit coming out of reverse and back through neutral into the forward gears. If you watched the initial review from last year, you’ll know that Honda already gave me a heads up that that was something I might experience with the rancher and that, although they couldn’t quite say exactly why it does what it does, it was perfectly normal and not to be concerned about it.
…anyways, 1 year in and yes…I’d still recommend the Honda Rancher 420 to anybody looking for a capable mid-range workhorse that won’t break down or break the bank 👍

I bought a 2022 Rancher at the end of 21. I had the dealer install a 3500lb winch, hand and thumb warmers, and a 60 inch plow blade. Tax in it was around $12,800 here in Manitoba. It has been a great machine. I use it mainly for snow clearing and puttering around the yard. In the year and a half that I have owned it I have only put on 200 kms. But about 80 hours. Enjoyed the video. Take care, Steve.

Nicely set up! I bought a Polaris 570 Sportsman Trail Feb. last year. With hand warmers and an upgraded rear rack it was 14K out the door. I likely would have bought a Honda but I didn't like that their top end machines didn't have LED's! I didn't know you were a farmer until this video and now I understand how you can do all these ultra challenging hunts!

Thanks! You definitely learn what works for ya, and what doesn’t, so you can set it up to get the most out of it. The stock Honda lighting is one of my few gripes with the product, but it’s an easy enough fix that it wasn’t a deal breaker for me. I’ve heard good things about the new Polaris products too, but I owned an old sportsman years ago and the amount of issues I had with it just turned me off the brand…definitely sounds like they’ve made a lot of progress in reliability and fit/finish though! …and the work never stops, so that definitely helps keep me in shape for hunting season, haha. Thanks again for watching and for the continued support! 🙏

The Japanese have had factories in the United States since the early 70's. Almost all of their powersports products are made right here and distributed globally. Only the powerplant is made in Japan! The rest is built by American workers. Not by some 3rd world country or the Chinese. To support American workers and their families. I'm glad to cough up more $$$, instead of giving it to an authoritarian Communist regime such as China. IMO, anyone who buys a CFMOTO is a sellout.....

Cf Moto is getting so much attention because the Japanese companies are pricing themselves out of a new customer base. Same goes for Can Am Polaris. It’s turning out that cf moto isn’t selling Chinese junk they are seriously trying to take over the game. In a couple years from now Cf machines will be over priced just like the others. Their prices already jumped a couple thousand dollars since their 2020 models

@@jasonmiller9495kinda hate to say it, but I made the jump when I was recently in the market for a side by side. I was looking at getting into a pioneer 1000-5, but ended up buying a CFMOTO 1000XL. $7k cheaper than the comparable pioneer, equal performance and payload, more room, and it came with a roof/winch/full skid plates and upgraded LED lighting…all things that would have cost extra with the pioneer. I’ve always been a Honda guy, but it was hard to argue with those numbers. Now time will tell if it was the right buy.

Adjusting the clutch helps the shifting. I believe it's even recommended every oil change but ive messed with mine about 4 times and it's a '24. I think I've finally gotten it where i want it but it does still do a little like what you are saying right after i first crank it but it's not as rough after it's completely warmed up.

I think it definitely makes a difference. I tinkered with mine a bit after I posted this video, just before we took it out for this hunting season, and it was definitely a little smoother. I noticed the same thing when it’s cold vs. once it’s warmed up though. Appreciate the input!

@@cheechakooutdoors until warmed up mine still will kind of hang up and not want to go from 2nd to 3rd or 3rd to 4th but usually only does it once after first starting and that's usually it. I know this is kind of a preference thing but I took all the slack out of my throttle too. Wish honda would take a note from yamaha and start putting a lo and hi but either way I'm still a honda fan. If I was one looking for an auto or independent rear end I would have probably gone the kodiak route though.

Thanks man! You absolutely could replace the bulbs, but the ones that I originally got for it wouldn’t have let me use the boot at the back of the housing still, so I didn’t like the idea of it not being sealed. I’m sure there’s a way to do it properly though

@@michaelbayliss1794I hear ya. One of the very few things that I wasn’t a big fan of with these models was that the stock headlights lacked a bit, but it’s such an easy thing to beef up depending on what route you wanna go, that it’s definitely not a deal breaker. Just for hunting I’m in and out well before and after dark, so it’s one of pet peeves

What made you prefer straight rear axle?

  • @cheechakooutdoors

    @cheechakooutdoors

I use it for towing a harrow and arena groomer around the farm, so the solid axel has way less flex and takes the added drag better. If I was strictly running trails, I probably would have opted for the independent suspension

My father has a 2012 Rancher with approximately 10,000 miles on it. It's been a very reliable machine! IMHO you can't go wrong with a Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki or Yamaha. At that point, it probably boils down to preference and what you get for the best price.
