It’s a wonderful all around, economical, no frills bike. Just rode from Atlantic Canada to New York on it. 2000km return trip. Super comfortable, even on the highways and interstates. Did almost 1000km in one day. Love my 2022

Nice to hear! Is the seat comfy even after a long ride? I know a couple bike reviewers in my country who found all the CB500 variants getting uncomfy after around 2 hours of riding, although ofcourse it very much depends on the person. I'm sure there are aftermarket seats with thicker padding though but it might be too much of an investment.

I don't own one, but I'm betting it will cruise all day at 80 mph if needed and probably run the quarter mile in the 14 second range. That's all I've ever needed to go cross country.

I’ve owned dozens of bikes including crf250l, klx, Big Bang R1, xj6, gsxr 750, a few cruisers and my 2018 cb500x was my absolute favourite. Absolutely jack of all trades, unbeaten reliability, incredible range, Can’t wait to buy a new one!

I'm not the biggest fan of Honda but they have an absolute winner with this bike. With the way the world is heading at the moment. A smaller economical bike will be just the ticket. Great review thank you 👍

For anyone concerned about the stock seat, I found that adding an Airhawk made a big difference for me for longer rides. A more expensive option is an aftermarket seat, such as the Seat Concepts seat.

1 You will be able to beat almost any car off the line. 2 With a top speed of 100+, won't hold up traffic 3 Unless you want a road rocket, you have a bike for long term ownership. 4 If you want, you can mod it is up.

I have the 2021 model and absolutely love it. It is perfect for my needs. I think the single disk front break is perfectly adequate, and the dual disk is probably not necessary, but as you said, it only helps to have a bit more braking power. I have the black version with red detailing, which I thought was the best looking one, until I saw that green for 2022. It looks brilliant. Well done to Honda, they often stick to their classic red, but the new model looks absolutely fantastic.

Yeah the second disc isn't "needed" but it's nice to see Honda actually upgrading the specs of this bike year on year. Consider Suzuki's approach with the SV650 by comparison - the price keeps going up but the bike hasn't actually changed much in 20 years.

Also have a 2021, was a bit of a shock having " weak " brakes after riding an XJR1300 with its Race spec brakes for 20+ years, but for my needs a 15 mile commute on country B roads it is enough for me, and brakes are actually fine for the power of the bike. Motorway long distance......not its forte in my sore arse experience ( and I am a slim 11.5 stone). Fuel economy on my weekly route of 50mph road is 92mpg, which is brilliant, who needs a gas guzzling sports bike to be sat in traffic, or flooded roads. Honest bike.

Great little long term review! If I had to speak up I think I would argue that the short first gear is to accommodate those who have dirtier or stickier aspirations. I've always thought this was a home run and a long needed model for not just the market but for Honda as well. Thanks for your content! Cheers!

Heated grips are awesome, I've got heated grips and vespa hand muffs. I ride in all weather, I can't help smiling when I remember what it's like to have hands that feel like they could brake just from the cold.

Take delivery of my 2022 today. After a lifetime of riding everything from scooters to big Adv bikes the Honda just ticked off all the boxes for what I want in a bike going forward. Thanks for the great review.

I've just ridden a 2017 version of this bike on Madeira for a week. Was very impressed as I didn't have high expectations of the bike given its power output. Found the seat super comfortable. It's a great all round machine

Good and helpful review. I've got the 500F. Agree that pulling away from lights etc is not fantastic in 1st gear but the power is not lacking in the mid. Keeps stable at higher speeds

To be honest this is definitely the bike for me. I've ridden a bunch of bikes in my life and my CBR600 was one of my favourites. Not as fast as my mates in a straight line but around corners it's just smooth. But now this is the bike I want to take touring, riding around town, and some local ride-outs. Easy to repair, not too expensive. Perfect I think!

I want one. Had the 2017 and loved it. Found 1st gear madly short after swapping from a V-Strom 650 (swear to the gods that is one sweet engine and gearing). But so much easier to push around and a really sweet bike to ride. This latest version I would take anywhere pretty uch and the engine note is now quite throaty - and we all love that right? Cool bike. And real value. Great review Dan.

Snatchy throttle is something I had on my 2020 gosling (310gs) and became one of the major reasons for selling it. They by the way fixed the bug on 2021 and later versions - I enjoyed it a lot after 2020. The short 1st gear is something you will appreciate in traffic and on the dirt. My 2021 NC750x was killing me with the fact that it can’t go slower that 13 miles/h.

I'm side-grading from the CBR500R to this 500X this season. I absolutely love the powertrain but wanted some light off-road capability for Canadian backrounds (and our "main" roads...), and better wind protection. The exceptional fuel economy and relaxed longevity of the engine (even for a Honda) make it such a great mile muncher, and we can't really go very fast where I live anyways.

@@ShoFPSS It's about as cheap as insurance gets, at least for me here in Ontario (where the insurance rates are through the roof). I think only a dual sport might be less but even the Ninja 400 and R3 were about 30-40% more to insure than my 500R.

@@Thirsty_Fox WHAT? CBR500r is much cheaper to insure than ninja 400 or r3? i was planning to get the r3 if im going to go for sportbikes since its lower CC so I thought its gonna be cheaper. Welp I can’t take the r3 off-roading but I can take cb500x anywhere the r3 can go. I also live in southern ontario near toronto plus im under 25 so for sure my premium for insurance gonna be way higher

@@ShoFPSS For me, it was about $1,100 for a Ninja 400 and $800 for the 500R and 500X. It has to do with the accident and claim statistics on the bikes and not just the displacement alone. Definitely call around though and check all the bikes you're interested in as some places have way better rates (TD seems to be one of the better ones here). The 500R/X also get better fuel economy than the R3 and N400, oddly enough. I'd say the 400 is the most fun for track use but for everything else I prefer the 500.

@@Thirsty_Fox WOW REALLY?? the only reason I was only looking up the r3 or ninja 400 was because i thought it would be the cheapest on insurance wise. I know it could be also a difference wether when you own the bike or finance it but I was planning to finance an r3 but now, I might take a look at the cbr500r if ever I go sportsbike. Thanks a lot for the reviews Dan! You contributed a big part for my decision to get this as my first bike since I wanted an allrounder bike. I received my red one yesterday at the dealer. You said that traction control isn’t really needed for this bike but I think it might be, because I slipped on the second corner because of too much power, low temps, my own insecurity and I made a 180° turn… this scratched my exhaust and fortunately I decided to put SW-Motech engine protectors on so it didn’t scratch the hole side of the bike. It still frustrates me pretty much that I scratched it within the first 50 meters but well I will keep that slip experience in mind for the rest of my life. I didn’t experience any slippery behaviour on my driving school CB500F in October. That’s an experience that only life can tell. I’m glad you “approved” this bike since your last review of it. I’m looking forward to become a safe and sovereign driver in the future and have a great time with this bike.

Glad you are okay. One thing to remember is you had brand new tyres, these can be very slippery when new and extra care must be taken. I do still think it's better to learn about throttle control in the long run as that will save you in the future. Glad the bike is not too bad too! Ride safe! Dan

Yep new tire are slippery until they get scuffed up a little bit at a time when cornering new tires. Hope you don't lose confidence in the bike or the dunlops because they work great after they are broke in.

I have a 2014 CB500X and swapped out the front sprocket to make 1st gear a bit more usable. Dropped highway RPM a few hundred revs too. Best mod for this motor and transmission hands down.

Very jealous that the snow has melted for you. I bought a new rebel as my first bike back in September (it didn’t show up to the dealer until late November) and now it’s just sitting until the snow melts here in Minnesota.

I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking the oem seat was not comfortable. I ordered a Corbin seat and its been my favorite bike upgrade thus far on my 2021. Great bike review 👏.

A bit late, I know, but thought I'd chome in. As I understand it, the 1st gear is intentionally short for easier low speed/technical/adventure riding. With proper tires, or even something like what rally raid did to previous model years, it's pitched as an introductory adventure bike, and they geared it that way. Now, I'm a noob and don't know this, but it's what my brain logically went to. Excellent content @EnglishBikerDan !!! You've helped me make the decision to give motorcycles a second shot and this is the bike I'll be running. Best of luck on this and your Sprue Therapy channels!

An excellent, well balanced, pleasantly presented review refreshingly devoid of any annoying hype. Over the period of 2 years I rode 21,000 km on my 2015 model before recently upgrading to my current 2021 model (gorgeous Grand Prix red) three months ago on which I’ve already ridden 5,000 km - it’s so seductive I’m using it more than my car! I find the seat (on both models) extremely comfortable including many rides of 500 km. The fuel consumption is absolutely awesome - currently averaging (over the 5,000 km) 3.1 L/100 km (91 UK MPG) and sometimes, if I’m just shooting the breeze and dawdling through the bush enjoying nature as I did yesterday, it averaged 2.9 L/100 km (97 UK MPG)! This is one beautiful motorcycle - by far the most versatile of the seven I’ve owned in 50 years.

A good review of an excellent bike.....a green machine in more ways than one! (My 2017 model happens to be silver, but you get the point). As you say, these machines do everything pretty well but don't burn too much fuel. Every bike is a compromise but I would buy another one....simple biking pleasure! Cheers.

Good final review thanks. I feel similar. For longer two-up tours my F900XR TE is better. I prefer twins to triples, so this CB 500 X twin engine is fine for most usage. Relatively cheap to finance and run too (I had a 2019 for a year). Yes as an all round bike it’s great.

Great vid Dan. I bought the 2021 MT09 at the back end of the riding season last year so only have 600 miles on it. I’m returning to biking after a 12 year hiatus. The MT is a fantastic bike but a bit mental. I’ve been waiting for a comprehensive review of this bike since I saw it and yours is the best I’ve seen. It kinda got me thinking that I also need one of these in my life to maybe use for additional practice / commuting so I can shelter behind that screen. Your review has at least convinced me to go and have a look and maybe add to the stable. Cheers for the great content.

I enjoyed this video a lot. I had a 2015 one, before changing to an Africa Twin DCT (the 1000cc version) and then on to a VFR800F. I changed from the CB500X because, that iteration, felt properly out of place on the motorway, 70mph was a struggle, even with a different rear sprocket. I know it's not it's no the place where it's most at home, but I'll certainly give it a go again, give your review. Seems more than enough for A and B roads, and I think the exhaust note really sounds a lot better, it was so quiet before (remedied with a Fuel end can).

You mentioned touring, just look at biking travels and Nick! Also my son has done 50,000 miles in 3 years on his...all of Uk on 3 trips and 3 big European tours as far east as most of the eastern european countries and as south as Greece. A lot of GS owners he met were just gobsmacked at how much he'd done on his 'little' bike. He inspired me to buy one now I've retired and I love it...8000 miles in 8 months. I do wonder though what I might be missing out on when I hear how comfortable bigger bikes are with super suspension etc, especially as a 6'2" rider.

This will be my first bike. I sold on it. I don't need a crotch rocket, nor something that does 100 mph easy. Something light, up right, not over 600cc engine. This thing is perfect!

I like these nice runaround bike not to much power so good on bad days weather wise ,if ya wanna go fast use yer other bike. Like the color on that one too and I am not really a green lover .Good ride great review : )

My future bike for sure

Last week I rode a touch over 2,000 km on my wonderful 2021 Honda CB 500X. Never before, except on this machine, have I ridden so far on a motorcycle and felt so comfortable in the ‘saddle’. Over that distance (including 4 hours in a storm with gale force side and head winds) she consumed 3.6 L per 100 km (76 UK mpg) which, with her 17.7 L tank, would have carried me for 478 km before needing another drink. At other times, over considerable distances, on both gravel and sealed roads, she has averaged as little as 3.1 L per 100 km. She’s now taken me 20,000 km ….. and not missed a single beat. For what it does, this Swiss Army Knife of motorcycles is awesome in the extreme. 🦘

I have the 2019 model, yes a little deflector screen makes all the difference with wind buffering, getting around 90mpg if I do not rag it too much, would advise putting a plus one tooth sprocket on the engine to give first gear a bit more range, came down to this bike from a KTM 1090, it was just way too heavy for me to push around.

I had one of these as a loan bike for a weekend… absolutely loved it. As most of my riding is long distance two-up I eventually bought an Africa Twin but if I had the budget I would certainly get a CB500X as a second machine.

@@Englishbikerdan I probably should also mention that I’ve since sold the AT and bought an Ultra Limited. My wife has two ruptured vertebra and really struggled to climb on and off the AT pillion, but she has no problem at all on the big Harley and the back seat is Uber comfy. I am now looking for a second bike though and if I can get the money together it’ll either be the CB500X or an NC750.

Great review together with others have encouraged me to put a deposit on one the only problem being our local dealership in Murcia only have one in their showroom which isn't a demo and they don't know when one will be available nor do they know when we are going to get our new bikes..

I've been reading that Honda might be ging to reintroduce the Transalp this year, a 750cc version is rumoured, Honda still build the best real world bikes. subbed.

Very informative video. I'm planning on selling my F800GT and replacing it with this one mainly because it's lighter and about half the price of the BMW. A front sprocket upgrade to 16T and a lighter suppressor would likely be on the agenda too.

The CB500F is like a baby Hornet, but similar ergos to the 500X. I agree that 1st is too short, but good for city centres where speed limits are lower anyway. Throttle freeplay was about 6-8mm from factory but adjusting that to 2mm makes it more responsive. I think it's quick enough, some bikes you're up to 50mph so quickly you're breaking speed limits by accident. The dash can seem dim, but turning the back light up makes it significantly more visible in all lighting conditions.

I'm selling up and downsizing soon. I'm looking at one of these to travel from Australia through Thailand to Vietnam where my VN wife and I can do rides to China and beyond. Having owned bikes in Vietnam before, I think this is perfect for what we want to do.

Solid review Dan. I've had mine now in Queensland for six weeks, done 1200km at 3litres per 100km. You're right first gear is too low but once you get moving there is plenty of power for a bit of fun. I've had way more powerful bikes than this but I'm happy with it. The front suspension is great but the rear shock is a little too soft so I'll wind that in soon. My butt can take a couple of hours in the saddle but I don't think I'll make any change there. I have only one complaint and that is the windscreen. Buffeting at over 80kph is just bad in either of the two positions, I'm 5-10 (178cm). I too don't want a bigger screen so some work to do there. Overall it's a great bike and worthy of consideration. Always enjoy your reviews. Cheers.

Gday Geoff. I’m also in QLD and have a 2022 500X (with around 1200km as well haha). I swapped the 15T front sprocket for a 16T which makes gears 1-5 taller and leaves 6th sort of like an overdrive for cruising on the hwy. I’m returning around 3.4L/100km. I’m also struggling with the buffeting off the windscreen - I’m 6ft 5 and can’t come up with a suitable solution. It is a great bike though, and an enormous step up from my old 2013 500X. Happy riding!

I set up my navi garmin zumo 595 on OEM mount with OEM handguards (really well made, strange shaped ones) and now have no helicopter effect over 80kph. I got 2022 model. Anyway it's is not only cb500x problem, a lot of new bikes have this problem. For instance my older bike like tracer 9gt almost killed me at 180kph because this yamaidiots didn't suit shape of screen and handguards to this bike. So keep calm and mount real motorcycle navi system with oem handguards. Problems will solve instantly. Greetings guys

@@rockyp3917 In January it was $10160 but that was 6 months single seat rego. Full rego was around $10.5 or so. Honda's website says full Qld rego reideaway is now just over $11k.

Had the 800 crossrunner and swapped it for this and much happier

I have big bikes and I have small bikes. I currently consider my all around bike to be my CB300F, but this doesn't check off all the boxes to be a well rounded all around use bike. The CB500X is the best contender for all the boxes to get checked for my needs without spending more money for features I "think" I want. I'm not chasing big power or top end speed and don't really want it for a bike to tour on. The down side of my CB300F is that it lacks the comfort I need and the engine has to work too hard for my needs. When I'm ready, the CB500X will be the bike I get, that or maybe a Versys 650. I'm not quite sure yet, but I'm leaning more towards the Honda.

It might not be all the bike you’d ever want, but it’s all the bike you’d ever need.

Honda CB500x is all the bike I need... but the Ducati V2s is all the bike I want.

Got my seat redone by someone, added comfort foam and now I can ride for hours and there is no more pain. I like this bike, it's fun and confy but... I miss the MT07 handling.

Really awesome reviews, thanks! Just wondered, which of the CB500 would you recommend more to a beginner, the X or the F? Also thought about trying them out on track, which would be better for that? Thanks a lot in advance

Like you, I had the first gen cb500x. Was a great bike, the only thing that let it down was the quality of the castings for some of the parts. From a simple drop in the garage it broke the lever, the foot peg, and twisted the handlebars. Was a great all weather commuter bike though.

I pick a green one up this Friday 13th May, it will be my third (2016 +19). They are great handling bikes and at 80-90mpg its a no brainer choice if you don't have money to throw away.

had my bike nicked on Sunday 10/07/22 but I am getting a replacement via insurance. This bike is a real improvement on the old one. It steers through the twisties like its on rails, the engine remap makes the thing fly through its rev range and is noticeably more eager when you accelerate. Braking is smooth and progressive all in all a brilliant bike.

I got it last month and I love it. Much much sexier than NX500.

Had a 2015. Felt like a highway capable supermoto. Took turns like a champ. Could get the front wheel up in 1st gear with just a quick chop of the throttle. Probably the most comfortable bike I've owned. Negatives? Pretty weak above about 40 mph unless you're wringing it out. The bike is smooth through the rev range, but has a very busy 'feel' at 70+mph (interstate speeds). 55mph roads are good, but def not a highway bike. Over the 10+ years I've been riding this bike ties for 1st place with my GSX-S750 I had. If i could put that engine in the 500x chassis, I'd be in heaven.

I'd disagree about it not being a highway bike.I did 20'000 miles on mine. Lots of motorway at 70mph plus. But we like what we like. Thanks for watching! 👍

Thank you for a good rewiew! Would you say that the 2022 bike is more stabile and more calm at speed stearing-wise due to the bigger 19 inch front wheel compared with the old bike with 17 inch front wheel? Sheers from Sweden

I found a 500 ascot in Colorado and that little v-twin engine really went well I was surprised at the 500cc so that's what I'm saying I would probably get one of these put them older I have a decided what I'm going to do yet but I did have a lot of fun on that thing until wind storm blew it over and it totaled it so I had to do something else.

What the heck Jon sorted me out with my ym 22 Honda pcx fantastic guy. Planning on buying my cb500x soon and that will be the go to guy. But what are the chances lol.

Might get one but tempted by the new transalp. But difference in price is considerable and buys a lot of days off from work to enjoy the smaller bike

I’ve got a 2021 bike and love it….. I do hope Honda release a TransAlp soon though with 80ish Bharat and DCT option… would love a AFrica twin but heck they’re a big machine compared. It’s great how 2 people have 2 different perspectives….. I was watching a review of the Africa twin 1100 DCT the other day and they reviewer was saying how it’s not got the punch for pillion work!!! WTF!!

Haha, I think I saw the same video. I've toured on a 500X and MT07 two up, no really issues other than just being a bit more aware of braking and acceleration. I can't imagine the AT would struggle doing it at all.

Just to add, I’ve owned a 2020 version from new, 4000km done and haven’t even had to adjust the chain once yet! I bought a throttle tamer to smooth out the low speed throttle response a bit. It’s a very good bike even if I sometimes wish it had a bit more go.

What kind of throttle tamer did you buy? I have a 500F and I think the throttle is very sensitive at low speeds

@@nilsjrgenwalle6555 G2 Ergonomics. A bit expensive but helped a lot, I also think the bike had the chain too tight when I picked it up so it’s got better over time, that and the engine arc. bedding in. Good luck

Honda should introduce a CB500 based silverwing touring bike. It would be my ideal bike

Great video, thanks! This is all very helpful information, and the Honda really is a beautiful bike in its class. This is one of the three bikes I've got on my shortlist, the other two being the Suzuki GSX-S750Z ABS (quite a mouthful!), and the Triumph Tiger 660. The thing is, although I road a fair amount when I was much younger, and I've had my full motorbike licence forever, I'm currently feeling a bit of a novice and would prefer not to do anything particularly stupid (if possible). So I'm wondering if off the top of your head, you might have a gut feeling for how you might rank these bikes in terms of suitability for someone in my place? From what you say here, I'm guessing the Honda might be a top choice, as you've stated it would make a great "first bike". But I'd love to know how you'd rank those other two as well. Cheers!

The truth is, it would be impossible for me to tell you what bike is right for you. So best thing would be to try all you're interested in. Only you will know what's best for your needs, budget etc. Good luck!

Looking into swapping this for my cb500f, just wish mine had a more comfortable seat and didn't have such a bug looking headlight as I like more traditional round ones. Still a pleasant surprise to have full LED lights and signals from factory. Mine is super fun and torque-y, and I love the powertrain, looking for more off road capability though. 😁 I think you definitely convinced me, haha.

Bare in mind your Cbf 500 will have 57bhp where theese are low 40's

The cb500 & cbf500 were 57bhp the new cb500 are 47bhp. Believe me that 10bhp makes a big difference. I test rode the new cb500 and it felt gutless compared to the old one

@@tysonsfamilydiner-6012 Damm, that's kinda my experience but I figured it would be a perfect first bike because of how predictable (and boring) it's power band was. Would love to ride an older one, that also is geared much longer -for highway speeds. 😁
