Mechanic by trade here - You are doing it right by applying dirty oil to the sealing o-ring of the oil filter. It is not the oil that stops the filter from later binding to the block but rather the particulate in the old oil. If you use fresh oil it is very likely to bind later and make removal a bear of a job.

Drop cloths! Highly recommend. I usually put down something impermeable like plastic or a tarp, and then top it with something absorbent, like a canvas painters drop cloth or some old cardboard. It'll soak up spills, and keep them from bleeding through onto the driveway. Thanks for the video!

You can buy drop clothes with plastic on the backside of it. They are meant for stains not able to soak through and I’m sure it would work for motor oral

I do have suggestion what I do with filter. I just use punch , screwdriver will work too and make the hole on bottom of the filter and drain it. It is less messy when you take it out. And I always fill the new filter with the oil.

Nice job. I have been buying Rotella T6 at Walmart anytime it is available as there is a shortage. Even 15W-40 is fine for summer heat as the 5W-40 is more scarce but I buy both. I change mine every 2-3 months as I drive a lot. I would suggest a funnel when pouring old oil into the gallon jugs as I would definitely spill that. :)

@@mcmahansgarage I don't normally shop at Wally World too much but they do have the best price on Rotella when it is in stock. My suggestion is that you order it online and they will deliver it to your house for free. It has been super easy as long as it is in stock at the local store.

Beautiful truck! I'd install a spigot on that bucket to refill the oil bottles. Too risky transferring more than necessary Drill a hole and JB weld around inside and outside of spigot. Fill with water and if no leaky then you're good to go. Would love to see and hear some driving videos of that diesel.

Question for anyone or the poster of the video, on some diesels there’s 2 oil filters usually is this not the case for the 2022 ford f250 and should I replace the air filter as well for each oil change? I’m a diesel newbie and want to know as much as I can about my truck!

  • @mcmahansgarage

You just want to document your oil changes if you don’t do it at the dealer. It’s not that hard to tell if oil has been changed regularly in the event of an engine failure.

@@mcmahansgarage no need to prefill a oil filter! I have a 2006 Duramax bought new and never prefilled oil filter. Per my oil samples pulled on a regular basis(every 5000 miles) my engine shows almost no sign metal to be concerned about. Also I was a heavy diesel mechanic for a class 1 railroad and never pre oiled an engine unless it just had a complete overhaul.
