Today I am driving one of the most important cars Maranello has ever built - the all new V6 hybrid 296 GTB. Packing over 800hp from a combined twin turbo and electric motor, the 296 is a new dawn for the company - but can it really be "fun to drive" with such performance on offer?

    I had a 996 GT3 CS for more than 10 years and loved the engine noise especially after the Manthey K400 upgrade I got done. At least Porsche has stuck with the recipe of a high revving flat six for the later GT3's similar in character to the Metzger unlike Ferrari who are now turbo only on their entry level cars as are McLaren.

    I have been on a brief hiatus from my life long automotive passion. I found myself getting tired of the oft repeated ‘all new 1000bhp combined offerings’ and felt that that everything was becoming homogeneous……. Happily it’s past and I’ve returned and have thoroughly enjoyed your videos. In the intervening months your videos (already excellent) have demonstrably improved - you were already at a high level but you have injected more personality and energy into them and it’s noticeable - I actually can’t think of another channel that does it better - thank you James for bringing me back into the fold .

    11:09 120° is actually the ideal angle for a V6 in terms of balance and firing order, while 60° is a good compromise for packaging

  • @C64SX

    @C64SX

    6 ай бұрын

    I was pleasantly surprised to see they go for 120 degree V6 now, instead of the more common 90 degrees that we see in so many modern cars. The 90 just tells me it's a V8 with two cyls chopped off, and a compromise because they prioritize production costs above technical advantages. The best classic V6s are 60 degrees (Busso for example), and now finally we get 120 degrees in road cars (expensive ones, unfortunately).

    You are absolutely correct about the side profile of this car being tremendous! Somehow i feel like we havent really gotten a "poster car" that looks this good since the 458. And i still cannot tell, if i like the looks of this or the 458 more. The 458 front end is just so beautifully crafted, all the lines (and there really aren't that many) look like they are drawn there by an artist working at a sketchpad. The front end of this still looks too much like a production car for me, the 458 looks like a pure concept we normally never get to see.

  • @encinobalboa

    296 front looks like some kid designer tried too hard to impress the boss. It's not organic and it clashes with the basic shape of the car. Rear borrows too much from various Lotus models. Ferrari does not need superficial cues to broadcast substance.

    2:12 i've heard this before. I've also heard that this is false. It was said that the "Dino" brand was named after Enzo's son who died a while before the introduction of the brand, and that that rumor was peddled by people who felt that any Ferrari without a V8 or V12 was not a "true Ferrari", not Enzo himself. BTW, the paintjob doesn't go well on this car. The interior is even worse.

  • @iannjoroge5867

    I wonder why that "Enzo deemed it not be a Ferrari and named it Dino" is still a thing when Enzo named it after a Son who died too young. The legacy of his son who couldn't live long enough to create his own. Like where did this tale come from. Usually JayEmm is good at research for the videos so I'd have hoped he'd have dispelled it by now. Especially being a Ferrari aficionado

    If I had the money I'd still buy a 458 and use some of the change for the complete reupholstering it will probably need by now. A 458 on track is a wonderful experience. The simplicity of the NA setup is perfect. I understand and don't oppose the changes we need to make but it does stop these hybrid cars having the desirability they used to. There's a reason that restomods are far more desirable.

    Hi Jay, I have a GTS on order - I went out to Spain on one of their customer experiences and echo most of your thoughts. One thing to note, re the gearbox, I had it explained to me that it may sound like the box is taking a bit of time on the way up, but that it's actually due to the electric motor deploying in that phase "filling" - so while it may sound slow, your total accel is unaffected. Interesting tidbit I felt. Not sure of the technicalities behind it or how true it is, but it was one of the drivers sat next to me as we lapped!

I had a passenger in the car with me and the carbon seat creaked like hell. On the plus side though, it is light and nimble as a hybrid. The curves and holes look very stunning in flesh, without the weird blue stripes of course. Final thing to say is, why a touch steering wheel, just why. Bring back physical buttons and a real rev counter! We all know touch screens are either dying or dead, just like batteries.

    Honestly, the 296's engine reminds me of the Nissan 350/370Z's V6 or the Skyline straight 6, both engines I am a fan of. And I'm willing to bet the hybrid gubbins are helping that low down torque so the ICE can still be a high revving thing, basically allowing Ferrari to have their cake and eat it as well., which is good engineering in my mind. Definitely not a fan of the colour scheme, the blue is too in the face and the wheels just make me think of hot-boys modding their Corsa C's back in the day, not sure what Ferrari were thinking aside from 'you'll definitely see it coming'. I suspect in a more traditional red or black it'll look stunning.

    The V-angle is 120 degrees because that is the natural firing interval for a V6. Few manufacturers have used it in road cars because it is too wide to be packaged for RWD and FWD cars and once you’re that wide, it’s not much more to just do a boxer. Engines with different V-angles usually use split pin crankshafts which are heavier than 120 degree. 60 degrees is common because that’s about as narrow as you can go while having room for manifolds between and because simply halving 120 degrees feels good. 90 degrees is common because those engines share manufacturing tooling with the flagship V8 engines.

Like literally. All you hear is the specs of the car and then "wow" "wooohooo" "omg this is blistering fast" etc etc. Its like Groundhog Day. You wont hear any negatives or criticism, every car is just awesome and unique and so much fast wooohooo. And yet here comes Jay who gives you a proper feeling of actually being in that car. Who gives you the good take and the bad take. Who isnt afraid to go through the small details, the entire theater behind the experience. You wont see a lot of burnouts or going sideways in his videos, but you will get a much better understanding of what it feels to be inside one of those things. Thank you Jay for providing the essence behind these cars and making each review feel unique.

    Thanks Jay for the insight, as ever. Have had a berlinetta on order about 7 months, been told roughly 2 years to go. We share the same ethos re: colors. Not one shade of black on mine, went for viola Hong Kong (purple) on cuoio, even the carpets, with the requisite two tone stitching to match the yellow calipers. Daytona seats. My back is shit. Anyway, I’ve been very nervous about my omission of the AF package but 1) the car is already shockingly dear, (90K more than my soon arriving technica!) and 2) the bumpy road button plus lift makes the car so useable on our sorry American roads especially in nyc. I feared it would be a blunder in the vein of Porsche Weissach omission but you’ve quelled my concerns. Harry also felt it spoiled the car. Appreciate all the work beyond words. A Jay approved car is now a requisite for me. If you, Harry, Chris, and or/Clarkson stand by it, that’s a damn good sign. Seems this one’s a future 458 in terms of universal adoration. Cheers.

    Great review. The car is undoubtedly brilliant, quick and it of course has the right badge. Maybe it’s how expensive it is, I just don’t want one, I’m not sitting here dreaming of one. For £300k + I’d buy a 458/488 for fun and a 911 turbo S as a daily driver ..

    As someone who is unlikely to ever own a car in this category, the question I always have is whether ownership and performance (ignoring financial investment ) of a car which costs £250k delivers notably more than a car that costs, for example, £120k. As someone who actually has to consider money, maybe i'm totally missing the point and cars in this category are for people who needn't make such considerations. But I can't help but think i'd rather have 2 Supercars than one. If there was such a thing as a blind taste test for cars (eg; you own a car for a week without knowing its value), could you really tell which one costs over £100k more? I highly doubt it.

    I'd expect the battery will fail in less than a decade or so and there probably won't be any easy way to replace it - it'll therefore end up being a huge liability to someone at some point, and that likely means there won't be classic status in this things future. It's unfortunately a sign of the very poor thinking of governments and car manufacturers alike that they think it is better to make a disposable car that generates a little less CO2, but will be junk in 10 years than a car that could still be around in 50 or more.

    120 degrees is actually the ideal bank angle for a V6. 120x6=720 (over a 4 stroke combustion cycle). So it was perfect secondary balance but has primary imbalance unlike an engine with an even number of cylinders per V. I think primary balance has something to do with differing piston speeds.

  • @brandonchism6960
    @brandonchism69606 ай бұрын

    For the engine layout, a v-6 in a 4 stroke engine is optimized at 120° (720/6=120). It’s usually too wide for most cars where you see a v6 used but in a bespoke super car or race car like F1, they can be built this wide.

    You should try an SF90 before you describe it as "fading into obscurity"! I know it's popular to bash it but it's an astonishing thing, especially in AF guise. Drives so differently to the 296 GTB (which I agree is a wonderful car). The offer is there to drive my SF90 - and I'd wager you'd revise your view (and perhaps revert to your opinion of three years ago in your desktop video review that it was "the most exciting thing to come out of Marenello for a long time").

  • @neilturner6749

    @neilturner6749

    The SF90 has indeed almost faded into obscurity even whilst still a young-ish model - Ferrari’s own lack of marketing enthusiasm for it combined with poor residual values confirms its lack of “wow-factor” desirability (for a mid-engined Ferrari, anyway). You’re defending it because you’ve got one and obviously love it, and hence have simply taken the benign phrase “fading into obscurity” as meaning the same as “it’s shit”, which clearly it doesn’t. Nor do most reviewers/owners in general think that the SF90 is crap, but there’s no denying that at present it’s a very much overlooked and half-forgotten model.

  • @stefaneinz

    @stefaneinz

    6 ай бұрын

    I would point out that in the US SF90s still trade at or above MRSP. In the U.K. residuals are weaker, but this was partly caused by too many ex-demo cars coming onto the market at the same time early in the car’s life; something that did not happen in the US (fact checked with Ferrari UK). That set the early market. And we need to define “obscurity”. If the definition is based on social media hype, sure I’d agree. But for owners and fans of the marque, a 1,000hp Ferrari with an evolution of the great Pista V8 turbo will never be obscure. Just my humble view!

    James, your concern around range is not warranted. Recent trip: 550km at 60 mph av = 31 mpg. Qualifying mode to quickly recharge. It’s interesting to manage this aspect of the car. But you can’t argue with a small tank and decent range for when you actually want to go somewhere in a very special car.

Zlatan he chose to buy a Roma for his collection instead of the 296 he was testing together with Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc.
