2022 BSA Gold Star 650 A Detailed Look

This is a close-up video of the new BSA Gold Star 650 for release in spring 2022, filmed at Motorcycle Live in December 2021
This is the Insignia Red Version
I wanted to do this video as to this point nobody else has shown any kind of detailed videos as yet. And as a prospective owner myself, it’s nice to get a little bit closer.
You will see a little dust on the motorcycle as it was on display for about 5-6 days before I filmed at the end of a hectic day on the stand, so the staff had not had a chance to wipe it down before I decided to film! They did start to afterward but I was off to find a cup of Tea
This a pre-production motorcycle and was built 5 months ago I was told.
This video is to show you some of the finer details of the Gold Star so you can see where the catalytic converter is, coolant pipes, clutch cable, coolant expansion tank etc are located.
I was very lucky at the show, I got to meet the director of BSA Ashish Joshi and he very kindly spent a lot of time with me to talk about the development stages and the issues they had with design and engineering to make a motorcycle that is robust. They originally wanted to build a 500cc single to match the DBD 34’s
Mr Joshi rides a modern BSA Gold Star 650 and has personally covered over 10,000 miles on it so far while riding it in Austria to keep out of sight of the bike spotters (hope this doesn’t break too much confidence sir)
The engine is a Rotax designed engine. BSA added cooling fins although its liquid cooled to match the classic looks of a 1960's DBD34 Gold Star, the fins add 5% extra cooling capacity.
The Gold Star is said to be under construction in Allesley, Coventry but as of 01-07-2022 no motorcycles have become available to the public.
There will be a Scrambler and an electric model plus a twin cylinder model, The Electric model is actually being tested here in the UK, while a 90bhp version is on test in India. This is no guarantee we will see a 90Bhp model, its just they are testing at this power output to accelerate any wear. I hear its getting a real thrashing too.
Given there is a 90Bhp variant being tested using the same gearbox, this shows the engine that is first available being de-tuned to 50% of what its capable of, which should mean a very long lifespan for components which will be unstressed at 45Bhp
I did hear some daft comments on the stand with potential buyers asking for more power then 45Bhp but to be fair, I have a Yamaha XT660R which has 47Bhp and it can easily top 100mph and is very fast. The 2022 Gold Star is not meant to be a sports motorcycle.
Its designed to be a modern Gentleman’s ride, if you will.
For any of you that know me personally I own several superbikes and would be happy to own a BSA Gold Star 650. I get a lot of enjoyment out of riding a motorcycle like this.
The Front fender and rear fender are made of plastic to save weight, plus I have a 77 CB750 and I HATE rust forming under the fenders (mud guards), seems our friends at BSA feel exactly the same way.
I loved the feel of the gas cap, its nickel plated and has 1903 embossed into it, the key cover feels sturdy and really feels like a quality item compared to the gas caps featured on the current line of Royal Enfield’s
Features I really liked was the removable DB killer in the exhaust. It was nice of BSA to build this in, after all they could do a Royal Enfield and offer us a 'sportier' exhaust as an up-sell but chose to give us a removable DB killer.
There is a black dial on top of the headlight, it not LCD, it’s just warning lights including indicators, neutral, fuel warning, oil pressure warning, coolant temp warning
The first generation is restricted to 45Bhp so it is A2 compliant. The restriction is in the Air box and the ECU it is expected a £99-£199 (approx) remap will see more horsepower being unlocked.

I love it. I really can't see why some people are getting so angry about it. It's a new bike with an old name. No one believes it's a classic. I don't want it to be a classic. I hope it does well. And I hope the classic lovers keep their bikes going. It's different things. Why can't we just enjoy all bikes?

I think I'm what you would refer to as one of the angry ones. Just for me, I can't stand the fakeness of it. You said yourself it's a new bike, not a classic. Yet it's been styled to exactly mimic a particular bike from 60 years ago. It even has various plastic copycat parts. Where is the kudos and pleasure of classic bike ownership in this ? I'd have been far more respectful of Mahindra if they'd built a modern looking big single. Instead this is all about the marketing, trying to cash in on all the mid-life crisis guys out there trying to look like they ride a classic motorcycle. For me, this bike and the, equally fake, Triumph Bobber, are the very reason I can't stand this genre.

@@dave6467 I love classic bikes, but they would be wasted on me. I'm not a fan of polishing, am fed up with getting my hands dirty working on them and don't want to spend thousands on an old bike that I would hate every time it broke down. These retro bikes are made for people like me. You can dislike it, that's fine, but appreciate that a lot of people like them. I want something that's new but looks old. I think sportsbikes are totally pointless on modern roads but I wouldn't want them not to exist! I don't hate them! Even though I'd rather eat my own feet than ride one!

@@robbikebob I do agree with you about sportsbikes being unnecessary on the roads. Also, as the current owner of a 41 year old Guzzi LeMans 850, I can also relate to your concerns about the pitfalls of older bikes. But I guess, for me, the issue has always been the fact that bikes like the BSA are just a bit fake. If it was a modern version of a sporty single I'd respect it a bit more. I've always wanted to fly a Spitfire, but it'll never happen. Now, there are replicas available, in fact one flew over me a couple of hours ago, but to me it just wouldn't be the same, as it's not the real thing. That essentially is the issue for me. They're pretending to be something they're not. Hence I'd just feel embarrassed owning one. Of course, if you like this sort of thing, then the fakeness won't put you off. If you get one I genuinely I hope you enjoy it. Bikes have to make your heart skip a beat when you open the garage door. If a plastic BSA, from India, does that then that's great.

It will have to have a radiator due to emissions and sound. The most they could do is to try and hide it a little and tidy up the pipework. But it's a budget bike and every bit of effort increases costs and pretty soon it would change from "that radiator looks a mess" to "the radiator is well disguised but it's well overpriced"....

Is anyone going to buy it because they think it's a real Goldie? I doubt it. I intend to get one and aftermarket the hell out of it. I SURELY do love the look of the original having seen it in pictures and in the Barber museum in the states. I THink I Said if they made one like it again I would have to spring for it..... THAT said.... I SAID the same for the Z900 and they are making them again and I Don't have one yet.... But I am not worried as I have a speed triple from 2000 which I think covers any ground the Z900RS can cover 90+ % of the time. A great around town / slower paced bike may be this gold star.... 45 HP is a bit down on my expectations... surely we can get it to 60 HP or so like my old KX500 right lads?? I still have that KX500 by the way.

It's not going to be sustainable if it is built to the expectations of the 500 odd British bikers. You only have to look at the British bike manufacturers over the years to see what happens when you do that. Just make a reliable cheap bike with good mileage which Indian masses can afford.

Thank you for sharing. It's a new world we live in. There are regulations for emissions and meeting them well, doesn't involve much less than modern manufacturing. Its the way of the world my friend. Let me tell you, I talked with the director for the longest time, he was far more eloquent than I. But also the demographics of buyers looking for a 60+ year old design and build were in decimal places rather than percentages. So they did look into it. I like you have a love of old motorcycles. I own one. But I gotta be honest, I myself wouldn't buy a new,/old design. I'd rather have an original from the 50/60s than a new copy.

Thats why I took this video. So people can get to see pre-production motorcycles up close. As nobody else at the time was bothered to do, it was just all self serving standard influencer stuff. So taking a close up you can get a better idea of what BSA are offering. To be fair, this motorcycle probably had over a thousand people sit on off it, push it, scrape it to all the button. Pressing possible to try and scuff up the tank etc. I mean it had a lot of people on it. But you see for yourself the finer details that help you make an informed decision.
