2021 Zenith Chronomaster Sport vs Rolex Daytona: Is This El Primero Better Than a Rolex?

Contact tmosso@thewatchbox.com for pricing and availability; Either I have it, or I can get it!
The 2021 Zenith Chronomaster Sport was compared to the Rolex Daytona from the moment Zenith launched its latest El Primero. Like the Rolex, the newest Zenith chronograph incorporates a stainless steel case, a black ceramic bezel, and the choice of either a white or black lacquered dial. The $10,000 Zenith compares favorably to the $40,000 used Rolex, and despite a clear resemblance, the Chronomaster Sport represents better value for watch collectors looking to buy this El Primero new or used.
Zenith’s Chronomaster Sport measures 41mm in diameter and 13.8mm thick. It is slightly broader and considerably thicker than the Rolex, but most people who can wear one can wear both.
The Chronomaster’s sharp lugs profiles are more severe than the tapered tips of the Rolex case, but each watch features a bracelet of near identical appearance. The Rolex Oyster bracelet clearly served as inspiration for Zenith’s three-link design, but Zenith employs double-ended screws and bars to secure its removable links. In order to size the Zenith’s bracelet, owners will require a specialized tool or exceptionally steady hands while wielding two flathead screwdrivers. The Zenith’s deployant clasp bears a shocking resemblance to Rolex’s Oyster clasp, but the Le Locle watch’s deployant is of markedly lower quality.
Despite the shortcomings of Zenith’s bracelet, it remains the easy choice for watch buyers. At $10,000, the full-bracelet Chronomaster Sport represents better value than the same watch sold for $9,500 on a factory rubber strap. Watch collectors who want the strap are encouraged to buy it as an accessory for their bracelet-equipped model; doing the opposite will cost more money in the end.
But the Zenith Chronomaster impresses with a handsome dial ringed by a ceramic bezel. Unlike the tachymeter-clad Daytona, the Chronomaster Sport employs a ten-second scale for use with the Striking Tenth complication. This foudroyant chronograph seconds hand makes a full circuit of the dial every ten seconds, and the 360-degree ceramic scale enables easy reading of tenths of seconds. While every Zenith-branded El Primero Chronograph since 1969 has been capable of measuring intervals as short as a tenth of a second, conventional subdivided chronograph seconds displays were too small to read easily.
Elsewhere on the dial, Zenith’s A386 “tri tone” multicolor registers are present and correct. The excess overlap of previous versions here is replaced by scales that preserve only a fraction of the superimposed style of the older Zenith chronographs. As a result, the constant seconds, chronograph 60-second, and chronograph minutes registers are legible in their entirety. Zenith here employs a chronograph minutes register that reads up to 60 minutes, a welcome upgrade from the 30-minute display of most chronograph watches.
Since the arrival of the El Primero chronograph movement in 1969, Zenith watch collectors had awaited the launch of an upgraded “El Primero II.” 2019’s 50th anniversary caliber 3600 heralded the era of a more modern El Primero chrono. The 2021 Chronomaster Sport uses caliber 3600 and makes it available in series production. El Primero 3600 gains ten hours of power reserve for a total of 60 hours, and the introduction of hacking seconds marks an historic first for a non-Defy El Primero movement. The striking tenth foudroyant, quickset date, and low-friction silicon escapement are carryovers from previous 21st century El Primero variants. Water resistance matches that of the Rolex Daytona at 100 meters.
Unlike the Rolex Daytona, the Zenith Chronomaster Sport incorporates a sapphire display caseback, so watch buyers who select Le Locle’s favorite son will enjoy full vision of the still handsome caliber 3600. A nickel anthracite coating, spiral-spoke chronograph clutch wheels, and a visible column wheel with lateral clutch ensure that the El Primero would win the appearance stakes against Rolex even if the Daytona were fitted with a sapphire caseback.
In today’s marketplace, the steel Rolex Daytona is a $13,150 new watch that becomes a $40,000 used watch. By comparison, the Zenith Chronomaster Sport retails for ten grand and sells for roughly the same $10,000 as a used watch. While not as plentiful at dealers as other Zenith watches, the Chronomaster Sport supply pipeline looks nothing like the years-long waiting lists at authorized Rolex dealers. The 2021 Zenith Chronomaster Sport isn’t the most original watch design of the year, but it is one of the best all-around men’s watches for the money.

Australia too. You can end up waiting many years even forever on their waiting list. I heard it's better to purchase something on display at the AD maybe even another brand and become their customer and then ask about the waiting list? They may treat you more seriously as a loyal customer as opposed to say a rich chinese tourists that will purchase a watch and go back home. The market is a big problem huge demand little supply thats why used prices are a couple of grand more expensive than new pieces. The other issue is AD can't get their hands on the watches they/ their customers always want. i.e they are allocated to AD of the production randomly as I understood it.

Late to the game here but I just bought the Chronomaster Sport on a whim the other day, having tried one on my wrist in Las Vegas recently and immediately falling in love. Passing Cellini on Park Ave, I noted a Chronomaster Original in the window, and having just read something about it, when in to try it on: too small, too self-deprecating, too vintage. Then the Chronomaster Sport, and I remembered immediately that I was in love; and I bought it on the spot (now $11,000). And here's the thing: only then did I read up on it and realize that there was this huge controversy about its similarities to the Daytona. I'd seen articles on this watch at the time it came out, but frankly I thought the tri-color subdials were weird and unattractive, and I read no further. Then I saw it in Las Vegas and realize they turned me on. Anyway, I get my new Chronomaster Sport back home and check out the internet reviews, astonished to discover that all people want to talk about is whether it is a ripoff of the Daytona. Let me say this: I agree with this take, Tim, 100%, as you focus both on the fact that every great design is both imitated and has its own predecessors, and on the fact that the inside the case is a true original, which casts what's outside the case in a different light. I would add one point, which I've seen mentioned in one other review, which is that there are as many differences on the dials of these two watches as there are similarities -- the tricolor overlapping sundials most particularly -- and that the real reason they look so similar is simply the black ceramic bezel. If you compare the Chronomaster Sport to the Original, you see that this is true. Remove the inner black ring from the Original and put a dark ceramic bezel on it and you'd have another Daytona; and yet you accurately describe the Original as, well, entirely original. Here's one ironic element I'll add to this story: I have currently three watches plagued by the same "poor man's _______________" syndrome. In addition to the Chronomaster Sport, I own a GP Laureato chronograph with blue dial (Royal Oak) and a Glashutte Original Panoreserve (Lange 1). I love all three of these watches for how they look, and for how they look as distinguished from how their "siblings" look, and it bothers me only slightly that they are seen as drawing too closely from the family tree. Sigh.

Rolex used El Primero movements in the Daytona for a long time and Zenith didn’t get much credit for it. Now Zenith takes back its pride with „borrowing“ the design from Rolex. It reignited the discussion about movements and this is where Zenith can shine.

  • @the1916companywatchreviews

    @the1916companywatchreviews

    2 жыл бұрын

To be perfectly honest, Rolex deserves a lot of the credit for the 1990s Zenith-built caliber 4030. Speaking from a watchmaker's standpoint, Rolex's version of the El Primero was a huge upgrade with massive changes to the winding system, calendar, escapement, balance, hairspring, regulator, and chronometer adjustments. Yes, Zenith built that movement, but it was hardly a drop-in solution. Then Rolex's 4130 came out in 2000, and it is in some ways still superior to the newest El Primero 3600. Rolex worship online is tiresome, but it's still important to acknowledge there's a formidable engineering cadre in Geneva. Best, Tim

Rolex is the father.... except Daytonas pre automatic used Valjoux hand wind movements and then Zenith movements for the first 12 years of their automatic existence until Rolex finally figured out how build their own. Will you ever see Zenith use a rolex movement? nope, because Zenith know what they are doing.

  • @hodb3906

I agree. Rolex may be the "father" but everyone knows that the El Primero made the Daytona and not the other way around. I honestly just love Zenith even more with this watch just because of how much it clashes with the Daytona. After a miserable failure with the Valjoux movement. The "ingenuity" of the 4030 caliber where the horde was ready to praise it since it was "based" on the zenith 400 caliber. The amount of times the fanboys cope that Rolex "modified 50% of the movement" is just so laughable. Which makes it ironic when they accuse Zenith of "copying" while spuwing out that Rolex "modified" their movement. Sure, let's take a look at these "modifications": - from a regulator to a free sprung movement - from 36000 to 28800 bph - half bridge to full bridge balance - removing the date function. Aaaaand, that's pretty much it. They " modified 50% " by removing 50% of the movement. Even the chronograph was still laterally integrated lol. I feel like Zenith is taking the piss to an even further extent by implementing a ceramic bezel to this watch to upset the fanboys even further.

Every feature of the Chronomaster Sport is one that Zenith has used in the past, just not in this combination. It could almost be argued that Rolex copied Zenith, but just has better press. The bracelet, just like the oyster, is pure Gay Freres. I'll agree, this implement of the bracelet is dreadful, definitely buy on a strap and save yourself the money. Zenith makes wonderful straps and this watch truly shines on a strap. I've said before, but it bears repeating, I looked at the Daytonas in an AD the day before I ordered the Zenith. The Daytona left me saying, "meh," but the Zenith, it tugs at my heartstrings. If someone were to compliment me on my "Rolex," I'll look them in the eye and correct them (kindly). Zenith had history when Hans Wilsdorf was still trying to come up with a name. :-)

" Full balance bridge and free-sprung balance " - because it's a pin regulated balance since a free-sprung balance at 5 hZ is impossible without direct impulse. Unlike the new 9SA5 caliber from Grand Seiko which made free-sprung 5 hZ escapement possible. There is no need for either full balance bridge nor free-sprung. 5 hZ are still more accurate and retain it longer due to shorter amplitudes. " smooth vertical clutch engagement " - Have you ever operated the Chronomaster sport? Because it's just as smooth. That little bump from a lateral clutch is practically non-existent since the outer hand measures the tenths of the second. Now here are the "features" you don't have on a daytona. - 5 hZ oscillation. - Tenth second accuracy - date function - no useless tachymeter - no grey market hassle nor paying twice retail to get topped by flippers nor ADs - no half decade waiting lists Nor do I remember when Zenith was dependent on others their movement (cough cough Valjoux cough cough). Nor do I remember Zenith being dependent of Rolex for their movement. Before you even think about saying that Rolex " modified " 50% the movement, they pretty much removed the date function, changed theirs into a 4 hZ full bridge free sprung balance and changed the oscillating weight. So much for " modifying 50% " of it. So much for " originality " either because it was definitely the looks of " copying the Daytona " that made the El Primero famous and not the fact that it was one of the first high beat movements automatic chronographs. Answer me this: If it was the looks and the " copying " of Zenith then how come the first El Primero watches were popular on release while the Daytona wasn't ? Seems strange, doesn't it? But you do you mate.

Zenith was good enough to be used by Rolex on the Daytona in the first place. For nostalgia purposes, I think the Zenith is the better. If you can ball out, by all means grab a Daytona. Really love having that date though 👌

People get this a little twisted - Zenith did not and does not need Rolex to validate its superiority over that brand. Lest we forget, if Rolex were so good why were they going cap in hand to esteemed watchmakers for movements they did not have the faculty to make for themselves? This is but one example of the Rolex effect, another is that Rolex owners think their watch is “better” because it cost more - take the label off it and then compare it, you will often come up short, very short.

I did, but this show was about giving the spotlight to the Zenith. Rolex gets tons of dedicated press, so I wanted a show that was maybe 20% Rolex and 80% Chronomaster. Initially, I considered not even featuring the Rolex in this segment. While I've already shot a dedicated Collector's Guide with a Daytona, I still came to the conclusion that you can't shoot a feature with this Zenith and not mention the elephant in the room: Rolex resemblance. No. There's too much outright Rolex design piracy taking place on a million cheap watches made in the far east. Zenith would just point to all the times Rolex failed to police its patents, and any court would agree that a claim against Zenith would be untenable based on Rolex's track record. With Rolex, you're far more likely to get sued if you attempt to pirate an engineered solution. That's the kind of stuff that far eastern knockoffs wouldn't be able to manage and only large Swiss OEMs would have the capacity to attempt. Thus, Zenith is in the clear to cop the Daytona style, but God help them if they try to copy Rolex's escapement architecture or hairspring alloy. Best, Tim

@@Alexander-dr4mw buying new Rolex at retail price isn’t stupid at all, it’s a matter of choice and basically…. availability. People buy used Rolex watches close to retail price if not higher… in my case, all my watches have gone up in value and used they cost more than what I paid, especially my Batgirl and GMT Master II. Daytona is coming next year for my 50th birthday. What you’re saying is indeed applicable to many other brands including high Uber expensive giants but not Rolex, Patek or AP. I wouldn’t pay crazy money for Breitling for example and a few Omegas (my SM 25th anniversary was selling 1K less in the grey market the day I bought it). HOWEVER, some people - like myself - prefer to have the experience of buying luxury goods at the official dealer even if that means paying full price AND even more importantly, to cultivate a relationship with benefits, like the non-existing “waiting list”. Also, I personally believe a watch is a ver PERSONAL item and I don’t find it especially attractive to wear someone else’s possession, even if it’s clean and polished.
