I've run my Thruxton R since 2016 with just a few mods like ecu tune, cam and slip ons. I've run some 11.6 ETs in the quarter at elevation and ran 151 mph at Bonneville last August with a gearing change and larger fairing at 6950 density altitude. So running at the drag strip 49 times and wide open at Bonneville 19 runs with zero mechanical issues. I've run everything from the stock gearing 16/42 to 18/37 sprockets because the engine is so flexible. Normally after six years it would be time to trade but I just painted mine candy apple red with gold leaf. Yeah I still love it and I'm looking for a track day , at 68 I need hurry a bit.

  • @AllenTodd

i tracked my 16 R five times last year and had a blast, but there are a few things that limit it on the track. The foot controls are too low and limit lean angle, the clip ons are angled back making it hard to get your head and body out over the side without being a contortionist, and while the torque is great driving out of corners you really feel underpowered on the straights when you top at 7K rpm.... The engine and slipper clutch are super forgiving though - it wasnt disastrous to lug around a slow corner in 3rd or 4th even.

It’s about time you guys did, what I believe, is the best Triumph motorcycle for years now. I’m in the process of buying the RS and have ridden both the R and RS variants. That parallel-Twin is a gem of an engine and makes the absolute best noise. I couldn’t pinpoint anything bad about the bike, especially as someone who is just getting off of an awesome 2009 CBR1000RR, that I’ve daily’d for two years. I just purchased the 2017 Thruxton R. And I am absolutely obsessed and in love with this bike. My last bike was a Ducati monster 821. I also use to ride sport bikes for many years. I also use to own the 2015 Thruxton, but was disappointed with the performance. But the new gens are super refined and absolutely beautiful bike to look at. On my Ducati Monster I found I was either on the throttle or off it. There was no happy medium at cruising speeds. But on the Thruxton R I find you can simply cruise and truly enjoy the ride( which riding is all about for me) and when you want to you can wake up the beast and burn through the streets.

Ok full disclosure I am an old guy who rides pretty slow compared to you fast boys. That noted, the Thruxton is by far my favorite bike on the planet! My decrepitude meant that I felt more comfortable purchasing my T120 in terms of ergonomics but with 50 years of riding under my belt I can honestly say there is just nothing quite like the feeling of hitting the road on a Triumph. Clearly I am not doing wheelies at triple digits or dragging knees around but for the kind of riding I’ve evolved into there just isn’t anything better out there

My first street bike after 20 years of family obligations was a '16 Thruxton R. I then modded the snot out of it. It's just an easy bike to have fun on, gets all kinds of admiraring comments on the street, is super high quality in build & engineering, and rewards good technique when going fast without trying to kill you. It's just a treat all the way around, doing everything really well, even if other bikes do beat it in specific limited aspects. Unless you are already jonesing for another bike, and for those who have the extra 1.5 grand premium that the Triumph tag seems to impose, or if you find one on sale like I did for $2K off, it's a great choice.

That airfield you mentioned at the start in the history segment still runs today for small private planes. There is now a permit race track built around it that is the fastest track in the UK in terms of average speed. They do a lot of national series there as well as driving experiences however I don't think they do much motorcycle stuff if any. Pretty underrated track imo (might be biased because it's one of the few I've been to). Both are still called thruxton.

I had a Ducati Supersport and went with this for a keeper. The Thruxton compared to the Ducati Supersport 950 has a comparable racing heritage, the same ergos, same Brembo brakes as the SS, full adjust Olins suspension, fully adj front forks, same weight, comparable tires, but the Thruxton is better built (re: more reliable) and attention to build detail, easier to work on myself by a long shot (way cheaper Triumph mech service when needed - no desmo fiddling), better sounding stock, and a classic style that won't go out of style. I loved the Italian style and performance of the Duc, but I don't do track days, I just ride twisties and do short multi-day trips....and who doesn't love that British cafe style done properly. As mentioned in the video, Triumph got the cafe style and sport bike performance balance just right. Mine is the Chrome Edition RS and it looks like a custom bike and rides as much like a sport bike as you need for the street.

The braking can be sharpened considerable by changing brake pads. Triumph puts less aggressively biting pads in the M50's on this bike to soften the initial response. There are lots of different pads available, BUT, do you really need more aggressive initial bite? I swapped out the pads on my Streetfighter for a set a bit less aggressive and it makes for a more forgiving ride. When you grab a bunch of front brake with these pads, the Brembos will still make your eyse bulge out!

l just bought a Bonneville T120 a couple of months ago, even though it is not a Thruxton, I agree with everything you said about Triumphs. I traded a Moto Guzzi 1400 Audace for it as my MG was getting too heavy and awkward for me. The Triumph is a pleasure to ride, very smooth and well engineered. I agree about the brakes. They are plenty strong although it takes more lever pressure than my Moto Guzzi. Even My V7lll Guzzi's brakes feel more powerful even with a single disc, but the Triumph's brakes are quite strong just takes more pressure.

Hydraulic clutch is a must when you have to run extra heavy clutch springs. I run heavier springs in my b-king, than my friends 2001 gsxr1000. His cable clutch is the stiffest clutch i have ever felt. Bikes are both street ridden, but are heavily drag raced, one is about to get nitrous, and the other a supercharger hence the heavy springs.

Is it just me, or is that the most beautiful current production motorcycle?

I own 2020 speed twin, tried the thruxton rs, but I commute on the bike daily, and when I do go up to twisty mountain roads I’ll usually spend about 6 hours riding. I found the thruxton rs to be noticeably more uncomfortable, between that the 4000 price difference and the fact that it would’ve cost me twice as much to insure, I went with the speed twin. It is my first bike, my first vehicle actually and I couldn’t be happier with my speed twin. I do intend to get ohlins suspension on it which bring the total price a lot closer to the thruxton RS, I only wish they made a front fairing for the speed twin like they do for the thruxton. I’ve been waiting a long time to see either a speedtwin or any of the 1200 thruxton reviewed on Yammie noob.

Nice one 👍👍 really love the thruxton named after the British race circuit near stone hendge. Actually saw Barry sheen there back in the day "70s" he won 500cc world championship twice which is now Moto GP. I lived in yovil my farther took me so thruxton has a special place with me. My dad was into motorcycles and the new thruxton motorcycle is pretty close looking to the Triton, triumph and Norton mix motorcycle of the 1960s. P.s just had to pop over to the chippy for some cod and chips whilst the tea on the brew 🤣👍 you gotta try a chip butty.

I like it alot , I like the Speed Twin better though. They're both great bikes. The Thrux that you have there in the video is a work of art , a beautiful sculpture in steel.

I'm convinced now - It's time to sell the old Duc V2 Streetfighter - I'm going to schedule a test ride on one of these, and see if my aged body can handle the riding position - at 70 years, I prefer a more upright position, but LOVE the wind hitting me from riding a naked bike. I just wish Triumph would do the RS package on a Street Twin, for the riding position...

I bought a 2019 slightly used street scrambler based on your review. And ya for some unknown reason a really fun bike. I am really big person 6'4 " would I fit on the Thruxton? I fit on the scrambler. How would it compare to a z900r? Or just two different bikes. Outstanding review and vid.

i was considering Speedmaster (Thruxton not available in my country) & Kawa ZX-10R & Ducati Supersport-950S (matte-white) as my 3rd bike after Duke-390 & Trident-660 .... completely confused! . . . . if i get the Cruiser (speedmaster) - it will be for comfort & retro/classic look, ... Kawa as a Faired Sport bike for speeding & sound (but hard to handle, i can only tip-toe with both feet, am only 5'6" & riding posture is forward biased, hence the arm/wrist/shoulder pain) ... & Supersport for Ducati brand (but underpowered at only 110 HP)

AAAAAAAnnnnnnnnd back to where I started on my decision matrix... damn. This only needs a fairing to tick all the boxes in my book... but the factory issued fairing is another 1000 and requires the regular under the triple clip-ons. So... not really sure.
