Dutch's Triumph Thruxton - The Ultimate Cafe?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

With the news the glorious Thruxton name is taking its final bow,
Dutch wheeled out his LA daily to pay homage to what is, a surefire icon. This, his third Thruxton, is definitely not going anywhere...
Dutch walks through the subtle changes he has made, with the help of @baakusa, @hitchcoxmotorcycles, @motochopshop,
@dnktuneworks & @newragecycles, but mostly, he revels in everything he likes exactly the way it is... Now, who has a Speed Twin and wants to swap some wheels??

    One more mod I forgot to mention, or, more accurately, NOT a mod, was that I left the higher bars on this bike, even though it has the catalogue fairing. The OEM fairing kit comes with lower clip-ons, which make the bike less comfortable around town, but I was surprised (and pleased) to discover the fairing also fits with the factory bars, so I left them on. My 2016 bike had the lower bars fitted from the factory, and I found the riding position hard work in traffic, so I am much happier with this new setup. If you do a lot of A roads or track-days the lower clip-ons will give better handling on fast corners, but if you ride around town a lot (or are tall, or under 30) leave the standard bars on when you add the fairing.

    I LOVE the Thruxton, such a beautiful bike! When I was ready to upgrade my old 865 Bonnie (another great bike) I rode the Thruxton and the majority of the 1200cc Bonneville range and ultimately chose the T120 because my wrists and back just didn’t like the riding position of the Thruxton. In the 3 plus years of owning the T120, I’ve modded it to resemble the Thruxton as closely as I can without changing the OEM handlebars. Still working on the right front fairing but she’s a real beauty and gets alot of love from the local Cafe Racer crowd.

    @@particleinthewave8378 You're not the first to do this... I think that's why they made the Speed Twin, which is essentially a Thruxton with handlebars. I'd be interested in retro-modding this model to look more like a T120 or Thruxton and see how far you could go... Or get the handlebar kit from someone like Free Spirits for a Thruxton R.

    I love mine and I’m never selling it. I bought a new black RS then a couple of months later they announced the chrome edition. I lost a fortune trading in but I don’t give a shit - the chrome edition Thruxton RS is one of the prettiest bikes ever made imho and has all the performance one needs on the road. I went for the Analog tail tidy as it’s excellent quality and every NRC product I have tried was missing pieces and didn’t fit without mods. Cone slip ons are loud enough and give a nice tone. I also did one piece Triumph seat, oem led front signals and oem heated grips (excellent). I wish it had a slipper clutch and it had been made in Britain but apart from that I wouldn’t change a thing. Love BSMC and always go in for a few jars when I’m over in London. Make your amazing Protective riding jeans in 28L please - they’re the best riding denims out there but my 28 regulars are too short when on the bike and I’m just normal height.

Well, the answer is that I've had the Thruxton in RS and Non-R versions, both with and without the dolphin fairing, and both with and without the lower clip-ons, and my preference is; with the fairing - as the design and look is truly iconic - but without the non lower clip-ons, because the higher ones are considerably more comfortable, and they still fit with the fairing ... and you don't notice they are higher once the fairing is on. ... Visually, it's the unfaired bike that actually looks better with the lower clip-on bars. If I was 30, I'd go low, as it is a more pure look... But I also like to ride and sometime function beats form.

    Nothing you said about belt tensions or oil change is true on the Ducati Sport 1000 (Paul Smart). The DS 1000 motors in those models are nearly indestructible. Your Thruxton is lovely and Triumph certainly did a nice job with that model range of bikes. You can’t make a fair comparison between Ducati’s Sport Classic range that entered nearly a full decade before Triumph. Other than that, all I have left to say is, enjoy your ride. 👌🏽

  • @dutchvansomeren9943

    @dutchvansomeren9943

    Fair comment Joe. My comparisons are based on them both being a European Cafe-Racer Litre-Twin at around 100bhp, with bikini fairing, re-imagined in a 1960s style, using perfromance suspension and brakes on wire-spoke wheels...But, as you say, they are a decade apart. ...I've had 3 sports classics, which I thrashed, but the GT blew up, dropping the valves into the pistons (ouch) despite being very well maintained and lowest mileage of my SCs. Belt slippage may have been the cause. I also used to be a super-contributor on the SC forums (as "LondonDutch") for three years or so, so from tis experience I agree that in general the DS1000 Hypermotard/SportClassic/Monster engine is a great and reliable unit, but, Reg/Recs do fail or even overheat and catch fire (mine melted my undertray), wiring is far from weatherproof (I always replaced my main wiring when I switched to LI batteries), belts and seals go brittle over time, and most owners I know seem to agree that if you mothball one for a year, check everything before you jump on it and ride it. My PS has been stationary for over two years and I am genuinely scared to start it up without a full service... But maybe I'm being a pussy? My friend in LA has two stunning SC1000s and he rides them hard and often. Anyway, I'm agreeing with you, even though I'm justifying my comments. To me both the Triumph and the Ducati fulfilled my needs for a classic styled modern performance bike, so the comparison feels relevant for me, personally, but - as ou say - being a decade younger the Triumph does have an unfair advantage.

    I'm only 5'9" but I know plenty of very tall Thruxton owners, and it's a long bike. Go and sit on one. Even if you were 6'4" I think you'd be ok, and you could add longer rear shock springs? Which you might need on any modern bike that's not an adv?

    All these modern retro bikes are based on late 60s and 70s design. I had a 1978 z650 and a 1979 Z1000 which share some of the flowing lines but I think it's the flat line (sometimes called the "bone line") from along the under side of the tank to the seat base, to the rear bodywork, that is the signature of the classic motorcycle, which they all share.

    Interesting comment, I'd love to know what that is based on? The CX500 is an awful commuter bike, and it can be turned into a great looking cafe racer, but the outcome depends on the builder - As a donor it's a 1890s designed, heavy, slow, underpowered, badly handling bike with poor suspension and brakes and skinny wheels with limited tyre choice, which London couriers ( was one) used to call the "Plastic Maggot". You have to throw most of the bike away to make a pretty custom cafe racer... It's arguable whether anything is actually left of the CX by the time you've made it a nice cafe racer? We also used to call it the poor man's Moto Guzzi.

    John Bloor is a billionaire, but not by selling Triumphs. He makes his money elsewhere. Triumph has been his passion project and he puts most of the profit back into the bikes, which - like almost everything we buy - is made in Asia, but to the highest standards and designed in the UK, with a UK team leading the business. If you want a British built bike, look at a Norton, which is lovely, but half the spec for considerably more money.

    @@dutchvansomeren9943 Sounds wonderful. But we need skilled jobs here instead of the low paid low skilled economy we have that relies on welfare to top up low wages. BMW/Ducati/Japanese/KTM can still build in their home countries. I don't think Triumph quality is as good as made out. A dealer I spoke to say the designs good but build quality poor. Thai metallurgy. Seen a lot of rough Triumphs in dealers. The clothing range expensive, but like most of our clothing, made for peanuts offshore.
