    Gorgeous car inside and out. Amazing reliability and resale value. The only downside is the powertrain. 250AWD is way underpowered. 350 is good except it’s only offered in FWD. Imagine an ES350 AWD… it would be perfect!

    I am currently looking at the ES 250 (however, the luxury trim not the F Sport) and when I test drove it I felt it was very quiet and very comfortable. Granted I am coming from a Chevrolet Malibu which is not a luxury level car and I prefer the "Grandma" Style driving. it was also the only car I've test driven so far which could be also why I liked it so much.

    The market for this ES 250 is primarily not for USA, but for countries which tax by engine displacement (e.g. China). It also helps that China isn't as drunk on the SUV fever like USA has, where most buyers would probably go for the RX 350 anyways if they wanted AWD. The ES 250 AWD in this case is really best for older people who care more about MPG than hp or handling figures. The ES is incredibly quiet, soft and serene to drive, and adding AWD gives it a sure-footed nature the ES 350 FWD cannot replicate. However if driving dynamics are important to you, the similarly priced IS 300 is probably the better car to get, ditto the IS 300 AWD if you live in places where it snows.

    I know auto manufacturers have to conform to emissions standards... BUT, a naturally aspirated 4 cylinder on the Lexus ES? The ES has always been a silky sedan, the V6 has always helped with that, 4 cylinders are just naturally buzzy. They should have at least offered the V6 with AWD (as they just discontinued the GS V6 AWD). What were they really thinking? It's an expensive vehicle, the power train is a slap to any buyers face. It's lacking the power and refined ride the ES is known for, it's crazy how much the engine really affects the car. I have an ES350, I've gotta say as a current ES owner, I would never buy this variant, I would continue to get the front wheel drive just for the V6 engine. If they wanted to pair the AWD with a 4 cylinder, didn't they think about pairing it with the RAV4 hybrid powertrain?

  • @NeoNoggie

    @NeoNoggie

    3 жыл бұрын

    I think a 4 cylinder base engine would have been okay if it were turbocharged and could get the car up to speed without hitting 5k RPM. Something more like Mazda's turbo 2.5 would have been way nicer. At over 40k, this really just cant justify being that slow and buzzy.

  • @ARentz07

    @ARentz07

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@NeoNoggie It's funny because they have the 2.0-liter turbo in the NX 300 that they potentially could have used. However, I suspect it would have been expensive to engineer that engine to work with the ES platform rather than just recycle something already proven (the 2.5 with the AWD system). It is a shame.

    Love your Content Chris! But your being to hard on the Toyota 2.5L I4 for this particular car. The 2021 Sienna you reviewed had the same engine but with a CVT and big heavy hybrid batteries, you kept commenting "200 horsepower is enough for a Minivan" also remembering the outgoing sienna had the 3.5L V6 and more power! So I guess to say that this car that is far lighter then the sienna and that it's always struggling to get up to speed is inaccurate, driving a Mitsubishi Mirage you would struggle getting up to speed but a midsized car with 200hp? No way, it's just what we've come to expect from lexus, but those days are coming to an end with Hybrids and EVs, and people who arent ready for that will be switching to I4 or I3 powertrains. I love this Lexus ES and will probably be picking one up! I personally want to save money on Gas and here in my part of Canada its CAD$1.40/Litre so no matter the price of the car, fuel efficiency is always welcome! But again I think 200hp is enough for any luxury cruiser, and yes people who dont drag race will love this! And I'm coming from an LX570 that I can no longer bare to fill the tank of! Keep up with the great content! Much love!

    I don't think the ES250 is all that bad. I think you're a little biased driving the many powerful cars that you do. If this was my daily I'd get used to it quick. I don't think the target audience is going to be looking slaloms and the next red light drag. My daily is a stick shift AWD turbocharged car and I'd drive this Lexus all day. Now having said all that, I do think for the money Lexus could have plopped the Highlander/RX drivetrain straight into this no problem at all maybe add a grand to the price, it would however make the Camry too expensive with that V6 AWD combo, probably around $45,000+. Nice review.

    So the only upside to this vehicle is... awd? Because I can get the same model with a v6 $7k cheaper from the year before..

    It looks amazing, but Lexus needs to rethink the powertrain choice... the 2.5L 4-Cylinder isn’t enough for this vehicle.

    They shouldn’t do F-sport 250’s only 350’s and 500’s. I feel like it really shits on the F-sport badging.

    This would be just perfect in Japan. Average traffic speeds are 20mph so no issues on power and ES250 drives on regular, it has intelligent multi clutch AWD system. We only have FWD ES300h in Japan so it’d be nice if they add AWD to the lineup

    What's the enthusiast's choice on this? The V6 is torquey and quick which is great, but the hybrid is smooth and high tech and for this specific car might be the best powertrain.

    Personally I’d argue the Hybrid. Mpg is awesome, and makes up for any 8 liter V10s lurking in the garage...

    Have this engine in my mom’s RAV4 and I’m just triggered hearing it 😂. It’s so loud and harsh, kinda gritty; seems like the transmission tuning is a lot smoother here though. It is a super super efficient engine and very technologically advanced, just wish it didn’t sound so terrible.

    I drove one as a service loaner and was shocked at how crude, weak, and gutless this car was. Can't believe people buy the 250 at all. Found it quite un-Lexus like.

    Idk why they offer the 2.5L from the base Camry in a Lexus ES, it is asthmatic is a car this heavy, 184lbft of torque in a 3,800lb sedan, that is laughably underpowered and thats why you have to rev the crap out of it. I would recommend getting either the 300h or the 350 with the V6, the 300h is probably the best powertrain in the ES its very refined, super quiet, and you dont have to rev it out to get torque and you get like 42mpg.

    as an old Lexus driver i would never recommend an F-sport version because they dont offer more power, nor much better suspension BUT the interior is most times boring black or idiot red :-) Lexus has so nice interior colours to offer but not for the F-sports.

    I find it interesting how the “downfall” of this car, by the narrator and other comments, continues to be the apparent “slow” 4 cylinder engine. The ability to go “faster” is what almost always causes accidents on the roadway. Driving faster then you need to, just because you can. Keeping up with traffic? If I had a penny for every time I heard that, I’d be rich. This car is perfect in every way. Luxury, economical , AWD.

    @Trooper 14 Do you know anything about cars? Having more power and torque is often better as you don't have to rev out your engine as much to get up to speed. Doing this too much can wear it out quicker. Oh and drivers that drive too slow is often worse.

    The powertrain is excellent in the Camry FWD for its purpose of being a fuel-efficient reliable smooth economy car. However, it simply isn’t suited to the character of the ES or Avalon for that matter.
