2021 Ford F-150 Engine Comparison | Which drives the best?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I compare the volume engines: The 2.7TT V6 (325hp,400tq), the 3.5TT V6 (400hp,500tq), and the 5.0 V8 (400hp, 410tq). I think all engines are very competent! I don't have access to the 3.3 V6 and the 3.0 Diesel, but if I do, I'll do a video on it! Pros of each-
2.7- Zippy, good mpg, good low end torque, smooth, cost
3.5- Great torque, capability, power, towing, fast
5.0- Great V8 sound, smooth, powerful, fast, reliability (assumed)

V8 'rumble' is nice if you're cruising to the drive-in. Get on the highway for a 300 or 1200 mile drive and 'peace and quiet' beats 'V8 rumble' hands down. My 3.5 Eco has been on a bunch of 300 mile trips - dozens last summer - and it's a dream on the highway. Smooth, quiet, and good mpg's. (Though nothing gets good mpg's when pulling a trailer.)

I need to say this one more time. As a car salesman. For a certain car company, I simply appreciate the respect shown to theses vehicles. I have personally “ Dismissed “ 3 people at our dealer because of the abuse they put on brand new vehicles that didn’t belong to us and were brand new trucks. One of them was So bad that I had no choice to make it a “ Company vehicle” because I could not sell that particular truck to a customer. I am in litigation with that person because of the extreme abuse. We are talking about a $57,000 truck.

I feel like I drive a 90's Lightning but with way better than the old slow V6 fuel economy. Best of both worlds. Mine is Leadfoot grey with the sport body color bumpers. If you drive the Ecoboost like a grocery getter and stay out of the turbos it will get better MPG. If you are actually enjoying the power or working the truck the 5.0 will give you better fuel economy. I don’t keep my foot out of mine, use sport mode a lot, have a tune and still average 18 MPG. I enjoyed your video! Let me preface the following by acknowledging that it all pertains to the 2018-2020 models, so I imagine that it doesn't apply as well to the current 2021 and 2022 trucks. But, with that said... In 2020, I decided it was time to buy my two farm managers new (or close to it) F-150's...and I wanted them to be nice and well optioned, knowing that they would take good care of them. However, I also kept my intentions secret for a year+ (and the pickups off-site) for me to play with, lol. I bought the guys: 2018 SuperCab XLT Sport FX4 4x4 w/3.5 EcoBoost (used with 10K miles) 2018 SuperCab XLT 4x4 w/5.0 (used with 10K miles). And simultaneously, I bought myself a new 2020 SuperCrew Lariat FX4 4x4 w/3.5 and Max Tow package. The two 2018's have the 7,050 lbs. GVW package with 18 inch wheels. The 2020 is 7,000 lbs. with 18 inchers. During that year, and after thousands of "my" miles accumulated on all three trucks, I confirmed my suspicions that I love the tow power/torque and gas mileage virtues of the 3.5 EcoBoost. Just a fantastic engine; it seems to have all of the virtues! As originally planned, in early 2021 I handed off the 2018 3.5 FX4 Sport to my first manager -- and he loves it! However, I also fell in love with the 5.0 SuperCab, trimmed in Blue Jeans and the chrome package. Loved the linear feel of the throttle and great economy too. And then there's that intoxicating sound! I decided to keep it for myself along with my Magnetic 2020 SuperCrew 3.5, lol. I call it my "Mustang". So, now I play with the best of both worlds...turbo six family car SuperCrew and the V8 sports car SuperCab, too. I think on a purely emotional basis, the 5.0 is my favorite. But I totally appreciate the overall technical package and capabilities of the 3.5 EcoBoost. In fact, f I could only keep one, I would likely keep the 3.5. I love its torque for pulling trailers in particular. But, for daily driving, both are just wonderful engines! So, after treating myself to the extravagance of two pickups, I was in the market again for a fourth for my second farm manager (now early 2021). I purchased another low-mileage, immaculate F-150...this one being a 2019 SuperCab STX with the 2.7 EcoBoost and 6,500 GVWR and 20 inch wheels. And well-optioned, for an STX. Now, I'm thinking I might have to keep this 2.7 for myself, too, lol. For just unloaded daily driving, (the vast majority of my own driving) I think this 2.7 is just about the perfect compromise. Feels much like the 3.5 around town, but with significantly better fuel economy. It seems to average in the low twenties, where the 5.0 and 3.5 hover around 19 or so. Plus, I feel that the 2.7 is perhaps the most "refined" of all three engines. It runs with smoothness of a sewing machine. Splitting hairs here, really, but the 3.5 seems just ever so slightly a little less "balanced" in terms of smoothness. With regard to the well-known issues surrounding the 5.0, I have been lucky to have very little oil consumption (I think the previous owner pulled a trailer and broke it in well in the process, as suggested by his stored trailer info in the driver information center), but I'm aware of a thrashy sounding idle outside of the vehicle. Fortunately, the valve train (?) noise is not apparent inside the cab. But I don't like knowing its there. A few other observations... The 10 speed transmission is a real hit-or-miss affair, with the problems not necessarily surfacing in a single test drive. Both of my 3.5's have excellent shifting characteristics. The 5.0 has some harsh shifting around 3rd and 4th gears, and upon entering reverse...I mean really objectionable. I haven't taken it back to the dealer, yet to address that though. The 2.7 had the worst transmission shifting of all. All seemed well on short in-town drives except for occasional low-speed harshness, but kick down for highway passing from 10th to 8th was brutal. Totally unacceptable. I took the truck in to my dealer (who I did not buy the truck from, incidentally) and they made good on it with an updated programming from Ford for no charge. Given the problems people are posting online with finding reliable remedies, I didn't expect much. But, it now shifts perfectly...I'm still "testing" it before I hand it off to my employee, lol, to make sure it lasts. The other thing that surprises me about the STX is just how livable it is. I think it is perhaps a little more smooth and just as quiet as my other trucks, which surprises me given the 20 inch wheel/Hankook tire combo, which I assumed would be inferior to the 17 inch/Michelins and Goodyears on the other three trucks. Also notable is that on all four of these trucks, I immediately disabled the "default to autostop" using Autostop Eliminator modules. And, I invested in RCI skid plate packages, for protective purposes as well as to eliminate the fabric sound deadener stuff which inevitably seems to fail and fall off.

Haha, you hiring? I have a 2015 2.7 and I love it except for the sorry excuse for an exhaust sound. Was kinda offended when the dealer brought it around to test drive. But that quickly went away when I stepped on the gas. I couldn't believe it. I've always had older trucks, mostly 5.7 Chevy's. Loved the square bodies but they weren't necessarily fast. Little 2.7 scoots. I drive in the mountains allot and the turbos love the cold thin air. Fly up the mountain at like 2000 rpms smooth as can be. I don't tow much but it's full of my tools and usually a bed full of lumber and concrete. I fell in love with it. Still don't know what all the buttons do and I just figured out how to remote start it. That's awesome. Only issue is in the ice and you give it more juice than you might have meant to the turbos can bust the tires loose haha. I do miss the V8 sound but whatever.

@@davegordon6943 LOL, my employees might suggest that prying my hands off their company trucks isn't easy. Actually, in 2022 I traded in the blue 5.0 F-150 on a new Expedition Timberline with the H.O. version of the 3.5. Also have a '21 Bronco with the 2.7. I really like the 2.7 and 3.5 Ecoboosts...enough so that I was able to trade in that sweet-sounding 5.0 on one. Funny that you mention the square body GM's. I grew up with those (including a '75 K20 Camper Special my dad purchased new). Now that old girl just sits idle on a corner of our farm acreage. I also still have a '79 Big 10 Trailering Special 454, which decades ago was a daily driver, but sadly, it too just sits now. Back in the day, I celebrated the "last" 454 half tons, thinking we would not see that kind of performance again in a truck when the '80's hit. Now, we have trucks with relatively tiny engines that outperform those big-block trucks in most ways.

I’m heavy footed and push semi fast 0-60s at most stop signs and stop lights. I’m sure if I drove an ecoboost the same way my fuel mileage would be way lower. You get eco or you get boost. You don’t get both. There is a video on KZread of a couple guys that compared the ecoboost to the coyote pulling the same trailer up and down a mountain. The ecoboost felt like it had better power pulling up the mountain which makes sense with turbos. The ecoboost ran at about 4K RPM up the mountain. The coyote ran at about 5K RPM up the mountain. Having driven and towed a ton with all 3, overall choice of mine would be the 2.7. To me the tow ratings between the 2.7 and the 5.0 should be flipped. The 2.7 has a torque curve that kills the 5.0 and always seems to have the power on tap without having to mat it to the floor and rap the rpms out. It's also the best daily driving motor in my opinion it's fun and quick and also the fastest 0-60 of the 3 however down the line the other 2 are a tad faster. The 3.5 is a great truck as well just seen a lot of timing chain issues with them. The 5.0 is great when you want a good ole v8 sound but also has oil consumption issues. The 2.7 hasn't shown many issues as it was a purpose build engine not just a afterthought. Great review, just my opinion 👍🏻

My gen 3 in my 2018 was eating oil and i was doing oil consumption test once a week for it. The first tsb failed to fix it but the 2nd did 100%. The issue was they were using the wrong dipstick and we're actually over-filling the engine with oil forcing it through the pcv valve and i was burning it. They also remapped the throttle body so that it would stay open longer to prevent such a hard vacuum off full throttle. That issue was fixed and i still prefer my v-8 over an ecoboost. On the highway id be shocked if the 3.5 was faster since the 5.0 traps higher in the 1/4 but has a slower time. From a stop im sure both ecoboost would beat me but im not at all upset about the power. I dont have a mustang in the garage so this is as close to one as i get for a daily driver.

@Adam holland And that’s what most truck owners want, having torque down low in the power band to move things when towing. Not at 4000 rpm like the 5.0

I have a 2018 FX4 with 3.5 and in Sport mode its faster than my old 70s muscle cars I used to own. Lots of torque, it pulls like a Harley, especially around 3rd and 4th gear.

Mine is faster, and I mean much faster, than my 1997 Mustang. I'm running a very mild 89 octane tune from 5 Star Tuning. I've had friends quite impressed when I burn a line in 2nd gear in a super crew truck. It's amazing how much power you can squeeze out of them with a simple tune.

The real battle is between the 5.0 and 2.7. The 5.0 sounds fantastic, but the punch the 2.7 has is addictive. The 3.5 swells with power, but there isn't all that much interesting about it, other than just raw power. On the street, stoplight to stoplight and towing, the 2.7 kicks the 5.0's hiney. The 5.0 though.. it really sounds really, really good. Comparing throttle behavior is like comparing saw blades. The 5.0 is like a fine toothed blade, it makes a nice even cut. The 2.7 is like an 8 lb sledgehammer.
