2021 Canyon Aeroad CFR Review | Lighter, More Aero & Disc-Only Race Bike

Спорт

This video contains paid product placement for Freewheel. The new 2021 Canyon Aeroad CFR is the latest, top-of-the-range aero road bike from the German direct-sales giant. Unlike some companies that have converged their aero and climbing bikes into one do-it-all bike - most notably Specialized with the new Tarmac SL7 - Canyon has gone almost all-in on aerodynamic efficiency with the 2021 Aeroad.
Building on Canyon’s much-admired Aeroad CF SLX (which was originally released in rim brake form way back in 2014), this new model has been in development for more than four years. Canyon claims it is the “fastest race bike on the market”.
BikeRadar's Tech Writer Simon Bromely finds out how the flagship aero bike stacks up in the real world in this full review. Be sure to let us know what you think about the bike. Maybe you think the aero bike is already dead? Or do you think aerodynamic optimisation is everything? As always, let us know in the comments!

    Can we get a comparison? Canyon vs. Trek Vs. Specialized? Every Company claims to have the fastest bike. Most of the content is just advertisement nowadays. Zero Value for the viewer

  • @Vermonstered

    And for the most part the comparison Bike Radar would give would have zero value as well. As not only do we not ride in wind tunnels and instead ride through the real world where all air currents are turbulent and not streamlined like a wind tunnel. What you might see as one bike over another at 15 degrees of yaw in a wind tunnel very well might be the exact opposite in the real world as the air just passed through some trees and grass before even contacting your wake and then bike so all these micro eddies that no normal wind tunnel will account for. Also, does it really even matter now? All these aero optimized bikes are within 5-10 watts of one another even last generation, this generation they're looking even more similar. All have the dropped stays. All have the integrated no external cable bar/frame. All have revised tube shapes done by CFD which likely yields very very similar shapes even if each of these companies all run independent modeling. Basically it comes down more the solutions to issues than ultimate 'most aero' bike. Hence why Canyon noticed this and put in the adjustable bars, the quill like stem, not running wings off the front fork to integrate into the downtube to build a stronger and more compliant front end... and on and on. All those are aero and weight compromises. But if you have to know which one could be the fastest... just wait for Tour's aero bike test.

    @Stonecorner what models are you comparing? If its comparing aero models for each brand i think it would be Canyon Aeroad VS Trek Madone VS S-Works Venge. If comparing climbing i think its Canyon Ultimate/Endurace VS Trek Emonda/Domane VS S-Works Robauix/Tarmac.

    Tho there are many affordable alternatives for an aero road bike. For example, My Java Siluro 3 is a carbon fork alloy frame UCI approved road bike. And I got it for about PhP31k ($619) and I consider it as the most expensive thing I bought with my own money. And with the money you have in buying an Aeroad, you can buy about 4 to 5 Java Siluro 3 bikes.

The fully integrated cockpit starts at 5k with Ultegra Di2, so even Specialized and Scott offer fully integrated Di2 in their Foil and Tarmac lineups for less... I guess someone has to pay for the increased marketing and sponsorship when compared to when the original Aeroad was launched.

    The tyres being backwards are Simon's fault. He had swapped them onto another set of wheels for testing, and when he swapped them back to the original wheels he obviously didn't pay enough attention 😉 As for the chain, that's how it came out of the box - but we think it's got more to do with some of the naughty cross-chaining on display, rather than it being too short.

    Cockpit is 37 grams lighter and saves you 3 watt, but most riders can’t adjust it to their preffered measurements. Does your body position make the most aerodynamics due to frontal area? Weight and watt savings are normal these days but this is shit! I think this isn’t really smart. But, it looks quite good😉

    Thor Dyrden, yes but as he said, you are a bit limited in the adjustment of the cockpit. Therefore I mean the rise of the stem and the length of the stem in combination with the width of the handlebars. I am riding with a 130mm -17 degrees with an 40mm handlebar, can’t really see how I have to fit that with the limited options you’ve got with the new system.

  • @ThorDyrden

    @ThorDyrden

    @@daanlaan9954 The stem mounted can be adjusted +-20mm in width and as I recall 15mm in height. But you can most probably order different cockpit dimensions in first place - at least the old cockpits are e.g. available in 130x410mm and then you can still adjust this. The angle can't be changed though - but that is probably true for most integrated cockpits... if you need that you will have to stick with a regular aheadset for most flexibility and a less integrated bike.
