2021 BMW S 1000 RR Review | MC Commute
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
BMW gives superbike riders the best of both worlds with its tech-heavy S 1000 RR superbike ($22,195 as tested). Designed for competition but outfitted with street-friendly accoutrement, this Berlin-built streetbike makes a good argument for a sportbike that can do it all
--
Taking your seat at the controls reveals a flat riding position with a thinly padded seat and high-mounted rider foot controls. The clip-on bars are nice and wide and don’t have an overly aggressive stance. The 427-pound BMW feels both slim and light between the rider’s legs. One knock: We wish the windscreen was taller when in a tucked riding position.
Insert the mechanical ignition key and push the starter button and the engine fires to life with a healthy high-tech growl that’s signature in the literbike-and-above class. Ride-by-wire throttle response is smooth and accurate, plus it can be modified based on global vehicle mode setting (Road, Rain, Race).
The optional Ride Modes Pro package (part of the $3,750 M package, also includes carbon fiber rims, a lithium-ion battery, and M-badged rider seat) allows the rider to customize three maps (Race 1, 2, 3) and tweak combined engine power/throttle response, engine-brake, traction, and wheelie and ABS control, as well as modify the Dynamic Damping Control- Motorrad-speak for semi-active suspension, which is included in the no-charge Dynamic package. There is a caveat: You have to purchase both the M and Select package to get it.
This lets the S 1000 RR go from mild to wild with a few pushes of a button. Keeping tabs on vehicle settings is a bright and legible 6.5-inch color TFT display. The screen offers crisp fonts and fast processing power. It’s easy to read day and night, and has a variety of detailed trip settings. Speaking of which, we averaged 37.5 mpg during the course of our street rides.
We also love the ability to pair the vehicle with our iOS-enabled smartphone using the free and easy-to-use BMW Motorrad Connected app. This allows you to record trips and integrates turn-by-turn navigation on the display. It also can pair with Bluetooth-enabled headsets for a more immersive experience. Additional creature comforts include cruise control and heated grips (included in the Dynamic package).
Hard on the throttle the S 1000 RR delights with its hard-hitting and exhilarating overall engine performance. A slick-shifting bidirectional electronic quickshifter is another plus. However, in stock form, the engine is electronically restricted between 6,000 and 8,000 rpm in second and third gears due to US noise and emissions regulations. The engine also vibrates excessively-especially at high rpm.
Thankfully there is a solution: BMWHP.com out of Texas can eliminate the restriction and boost engine power output to right around 200 hp at the 200-series Michelin Power RS (stock is right around 183 hp). To this, you have to send them the ECU, ignition module, and key, as well as the instrument display. This modification also voids the three-year, 36,000-mile warranty. The cost for this service is $850.
Chassis agility is mesmerizing-especially with the bespoke carbon fiber rims. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more maneuverable bike in the superbike class. While we appreciate the DDC’s suspension’s wide range of settings, it doesn’t deliver the same level of compliance and overall chassis stability as other manufacturer’s modern top-level semi-active suspension packages. Another strike: It doesn’t allow for fixed damping adjustment.
Suspension woes aside, the S 1000 RR’s braking package is excellent. Feel and overall response from the front and rear brakes is exemplary and we like the wide range of adjustability afforded by the ABS control.
Aside from the annoying engine restriction and questionable damping response, we’re big fans of BMW’s liter-class superbike. Although it has a racy overall design, its versatile electronics package allows for the best of both worlds. From a relatively tame road-going superbike to a rip-roaring knife-edge trackbike, this up-spec S 1000 RR is a sportbike that can do it all.

@@MrFurley69 And for the story behind it... My variant of this "joke" started about 20 years ago, at a honda motorcycle dealership/service center, owned by a _veteran professional motorcycle racer_ . A dude comes in, asks info about a motorcycle, asks how much horsepower it has. Dealer says 'a hundred'. Guy seems unsatisfied... says "that's too few isn't it?"... dealer raises his eyebrows, leans his head forward a bit and says "a _hundred_ hp is ?". Let me remind you, this guy was 60 and could squeeze the _fucking life_ out of a hayabusa. Later on when i was chatting with him, he told me in no uncertain terms, "outside of professional racing, if you think 100 hp is somehow 'not enough', there's something seriously wrong with how you approach motorcycle riding"

Amazing amount of chain adjustment.
Hey buddy love the video great information about the BMW S1000RR amazing bike. Love that bike i believe that will be my next bike i get. BMW really built an amazing motorcycle with so many great features on it can't go wrong with this bike and the price is not bad compared to all the other Japanese bike's and Italian motorcycles. They are so much more money also and the warranty you get with it is also great with the road side assistants with it. Great video again. Ride safe buddy.
I really like the Connected app, but what I really want from the it is to be able to export the real-time telemetry it records (over & above the GPX routes that you can export). Telemetry data would be great for my track day videos!
Really nice review & great bike. It seems like the bike that most people would go quickest on as it's just so we'll balanced. Only down side is that weird restriction you guys in the States get. As much as I'd want to derestrict it, I would have to think long & hard about doing it of it voided the warranty. Kind of sucks but 183bhp is probably enough lol.
My 2020 M Package had the cylinder head changed @ 4500Km due to a factory recall, coating on the valves. It has failed to start 8 times in the 1.5 years I've owned it, software updates, new battery, and now a new module was fitted. Hope that sorts it.

It would not void the warranty. The US has laws against that type of thing. A manufacturer would have to prove whatever mod you did caused whatever warrantied component to fail.
@RiumEqua
2 жыл бұрын
I am pretty sure that proving that a engine which is specified to run reliably at 183hp will fail faster with +20hp is not an impossible task for bmw. I would always go the safe route and undo the mod (if that's possible) before going to the bmw dealer to claim warranty for a blown up engine. But they may aswell just keep a log of engine related parameters to debug engine failure. Then you are fcked either way.

@@RiumEqua that's the wrong analysis. the bike is engineered to operate at the higher level, it's restricted to meet domestic laws... removing the restriction doesn't put the bike into a "danger zone" -- it puts the bike back into it's normal operating window.

There’s also another company that flashes the ECU for that bike that’s pretty respectable and costs less. Either way, there’s multiple options for getting rid of that regulatory flat spot.

@@jasonw2291 first of all my bike is a second hand motorcycle, with 2.756 km on it and 1 year and 4 months when I bought (3 years of full warranty). After 1 month, 4.500km of using it, the bike stoped suddenly and it was because the cable of the sensor of the stand broke. The warranty covered. They told me 150€ approximately for repairing it. On the first maintenance, 12.756km I ask to check the start of the engine because the idling is not stable and the motorbike when is more than 45 minutes and the external temperature is more than 25°c the bike stops without apparently reason. The mechanic told me that this was because Euro 4 emissions. I ask to solve the problem and after 2 days asking for it, the mechanic (official BMW) decline my petition because warranty and emissions. Finally they upgraded the ICU with a new version (this is what they told me) the motorbike feels more free (when it starts and after 45 minutes on and hard use of it). After an extend use of the bike, approximately 19.890km and 7 months of using it, going to work (167km 4 days a week and the typical route on weekends). The cable of the clutch broke. The warranty covered. The reparation of this is not that much, but 200€ for a cable is an amount of money not depreciable. My conclusion is if you want to save some money keep save the warranty because you are going to needed at any moment. In my opinion the bike is fantastic, I am very glad and is my everyday ride (you call this use a commute, do you?). The best part of the working day is when I ride it!! As an owner of a 2020, they recalled the Hayes calipers and have put Brembos on. I’m 99% sure that bike you are riding for 2021 has Brembos from the factory front and rear. Also Bren Tune can remote in to your ECU when hooked up to your laptop. They reflash your ECU remotely without having to send parts in to some shop. Mumy concern is actually your comment, as I would be using it on the road, and I want the "most racing position", I mea, I don't want the handlebars to be as high as in my CBR 600 RR (its fault😢). Does anyone know which is better?

It's changed from haze to Nissin brakes from the m1000rr now, looks much better
Wonder if the Penske truck Adam was following had George’s files in it.
With its price it better have a good warranty and roadside. I’d expect no less for a bike at the cost of a car (pre covid prices)
Nice ride, Weed.
Great review as always! BMW is paying attention to safety, power, quality and backs it up with a car warranty. The problem is that until riders actually go down on a Suzuki or Kawasaki because of bad engineering and bad rake angles and out of nowhere or think it is acceptable to fall on its own side stands and keep replacing parts and deal with the no warranty or actually ride the bike they are in a different point in their lives journey. The story of this bike is so weird. BMW entered WSBK the same year as Aprilia's RSV4. BMW signed Corser who had 2 SBK titles and Aprilia ran Biaggi who had 4x 250 GP titles but no history in proddie racing. Biaggi ends up taking 2 SBK titles with the RSV4 while Corser struggled and the BMW ended up never taking the title to date regardless or rider and realistically has very few wins and podiums in the class considering the bike's specs especially back when it was new.
