2020 Yamaha MT-03 - Rider Ergonomics & Fit

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Yamaha have updated the MT-03 in 2020, and I'm taking a look at the ergonomics and how I fit onto this bike as a rider, at 180 cm tall and with a 32 inch inseam.
The MT-03 is particularly well suited to shorter riders, with a 780 mm seat height, and very narrow seat at the tank, plus a narrow design between the legs.
Flat, wide bars and wide mirrors ensure an upright seating position and good vision both in front and behind, while an LCD dash offers a simple but easy to read layout.
At a very light 168 kg the MT-03 is an easy to manage machine for new riders, and offers an ideal entry point into motorcycling. Keep an eye out for my full review on the 2020 Yamaha MT-03, coming soon!

    I think it really depends how important power is to you. The R3/MT-03 don't have the same mid-range torque as the Ninja 400/Z400, however there's a smoother engine character, that you'll be revving more, and the suspension feels a little more premium, but the brakes aren't as powerful. The Duke offers very sporty suspension and handling with a fast revving and punchy single, and the brakes are outstanding. The Kawasaki's are a little more raw as far as engine character, but benefit from the extra torque and a slipper clutch, nice and powerful brakes, not quite at the 390 level, and a good suspension setup. The MT-07 is a great all-rounder and has a well earnt reputation for being a great option, I'd say it's the point of comparison in that particular capacity/niche.

    Hello Chris, is this a bike you could do your P's test on (u-turns) and the like or would you need a 250. Could it also be used for longer trips with a windshield to tour on? Thank you for your great work that you do.

  • @MotoJournoKris

    @MotoJournoKris

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! I'd definitely say the MT-03 would be ideal for doing your P's test. Being a nakedbike with the upright seating position it's very manageable for the low speed stuff, and also nice and light, so managing the balance shouldn't be an issue (but it's worth practicing a heap before the test, on any machine!). Compared to the much older 250 machines, like the FZX250 I started on, these are just way better overall. I've done plenty of long trips on bikes like this with no screen, my FZX250 for instance I did 900km down to Melbourne and back in the day, while later my FZ6N only had a small screen which I added on. The screen definitely helps for the longer trips, so if you're doing that a lot or lots of highway miles you'll definitely appreciate the extra wind protection.

    @MotoJournoKris

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@nophoria That's a hard one, as how tall you are can have such an impact on whether a screen helps a lot or not very much. It looks like it should help, but if you're thinking long distance touring probably won't make an enormous difference unless you're tucked right in, helmet on tank style, which probably isn't that realistic.

    @@kaytlingarcia9775 Good luck! Definitely have a sit on as many machines as you can, because they will vary a bit, with the arch between the seat height and reaching the ground depending on how narrow they are across the bike. Two with the same or similar seat height can be quite different if the seat width is different, or the engine is where your legs want to go. Most of these machines now are designed to be very narrow in this area though.

    The Z400 should be a bit roomier, but there's a bit of personal preference involved in what people like as far as rider triangle/ergonomics. Are you able to sit on both the bikes, even if you can't ride them? That should give you an idea. On the MT-03 I was quite happy, although I'm a bit shorter than you. However going from the MT-03 to another bike, I really noticed that it's quite a tight seat to 'peg ratio.

    It goes both ways, some bikes have a smaller ride triangle and are less suitable for larger riders. But there are options like a taller seat, sometimes dropping the pegs or taller bars depending where the issue is. There's a lot less viable options for shorter riders though.

  • @sandydennylives1392

    @@MotoJournoKris I get it that most Japanese are shorter in the main than in the US/UK, so for their 'entry' level so called 125/300cc bikes they can leave a taller rider cramped, it's just that nearly every bike I like doesn't seem to fit me. Triumph are the same. The Street twin suffers the same problem. London doesn't really offer you the roads for a more powerful machine, there are too many of us, 12 million in a ten mile radius, tiny narrow roads and speed camera's everywhere, and untold numbers of car drivers who just don't see m/bikes. 99% of all powerful m/bike vids come from the States, broad open roads with 6-8 wide lanes and hardly any traffic and it seems no speed camera's, esp in Arizona which seems to be the epicenter for powerful m/bike vids. I've never seen a powerful m/bike vid from, say New York, because it has the same over population as London. You may know the Missenden Flyer channel, he lives 20-30 miles outside London and uses the same brief roads outside rush hour for his vids. You must agree most bikes under 800cc and nearly all sport bikes are aimed at the ideal 5ft 6 rider. Yamaha are slighty better for the 6ft rider.

    @@sandydennylives1392 I wouldn't be surprised if the US isn't even considered for many of the smaller machines from a development perspective, as it seems like the trend of going for bigger machines still holds true there, especially with nothing like the A2 or tiered licensing system. But anything new rider centric seems to go as low as possible so people have their feet down. I know on the Ninja 400 when I've ridden a taller machine it almost surprises me how quickly my feet hit the ground. The Street Twin also has a very low seat height all things considered, which from what I understand was the design brief to accommodate smaller riders, with a taller seat and a peg swap both being popular for larger riders. The 390 Duke or Husqvarna 401s are a fair bit taller at the seat, but I'm not sure whether the taller foot controls for clearance may somewhat offset that. I'm 180 cm and a 32 inch inseam and I haven't ridden anything cramped enough that I'd outright avoid the bike, but there's been a few which have certainly been quite compact. I went from the MT-03 to the R15 and it felt much roomier for instance. But there's also a bit of subjectivity in ergos, as I rode a Daytona 675 for years, so I'm probably more used to the more aggressive and smaller ride triangle, with most nakedbikes being roomier and more relaxed in comparison. We're seeing more tall seats offered as accessories these days though - or in some cases adjustable levels between two positions, which may be to address these issues.

    @@MotoJournoKris Let's hope so. I guess Triumph think the smaller you are,the less money you make, so make their entry level cruiser titchy. I'm too old for pure sports bikes. The Duke will fit me but they have terrible reliability. Probably it might be back to Yammy. I started on their ybr 125 custom, and in nearly three years all I had to change was the spark plug. I'm only looking for a run around so I'll look at their XSR 125. Both it and the CBR neo retro 125R have pretty good pickup for a 125 so it's a toss between the two.
