It’s the same for this Hatch, yeah it’s not fast but it’s fun to throw around in back roads. And if you really care about power; with a tune, some bolt ons, and some wider tires you can make this more of a “hot hatch”. I’ve seen people push around 200-210 with those mods and it’s a fun car, it’s about as fast as a Veloster Turbo, and it’s an N/A engine!

    "Why can't we have the good Yaris?" You think Americans would actually pay over 30k for a Yaris? They don't even want to pay that for a Focus RS or Golf R, and those are infinitely better suited to American roads. The GRMN Yaris will be niche, even here in Japan, the country where it makes the most sense. If it's successful enough, MAYBE Toyota will do something with the next Corolla. Akio Toyoda doesn't want Toyota to build boring cars anymore, but he's not an idiot. He's not going to greenlight something that won't sell, especially as emissions and fuel mileage targets continue to escalate.

    The weight is an important factor. I think the car is around 3,300 with the manual and that's not exactly a light car, It's about kind of regular weight and with 170HP it's kind of lacking a bit. With 200HP it would be a bit more decent.

  • @graumail

    @graumail

    SI0AX Gearing is pretty important on that side of things too. Sounds like the first gear might be too short as he mentions that you just want to get it into 2nd gear asap when accelerating. The weight is definitely a big factor. Compared to a cheap sports car like the 86 with 200 HP and around 600 pounds less weight, this would definitely not be as quick. It might feel just as quick though depending on how its setup, some cars are weird like that. My wife’s rav4 feels like it has more power than it does just because its always sitting in a meaty part of the torque curve.

    I’m glad we get all this simplicity without an upmark here in Europe. It’s not a special and sporty feature we have manuals for some weird reason. I’m a late 90’s kid and I remember it was still a luxury to get powered windows and abs in an economy hatch IN 2005, let alone automatic transmissons. Those were considered a luxurious feature (kudos to VW making us believe that at least). The market is changing but still, manuals are here to stay because anyone who can afford a new car cheaps out on options and trim levels and since manuals are considered widely available and servicable they are here to stay as the lowest and cheapest trim level.

  • @beseakos

    @beseakos

    p0rtp0rt, well uk has always been in an interesting spot in terms of car market. Probably depends a lot on the average income and the customer habits. Here in Hungary it’s a really even split between manuals and autos when it comes to new cars, however if the car is not a premium saloon or a hybrid it’s most likely gonna be a manual if it’s sold that way. Mainly maintenance cost is the reason people ignore the automatics. Not many people are qualified to work on them since there weren’t many so the cost of a simple routine transmission fluid change is awfully high and you need to have someone qualified to do it because apparantely most laws do not allow wrenching your own car so good luck with even a lip spoiler let alone an inch larger set of wheels (not mentioning you need to have paperwork done about the transmission fluid change because the next time you have your car examined they might suspect you also have “illegal modifications”).
