    First of all, a compliment for your style of review. I don't know how you comment so lucidly while riding those trails. Impressive! Secondly, great, detailed information to help me make a decision on a new bike. In my 60's and desire stability without losing the fun factor of riding Boise's and other Western/SW trails. Seems perfect for me since one of my main goals is not to crash as I age but want to keep riding.

    I'm 5'5 and weight 145. I currently ride a Specialized Stump Jumper and on a small frame wheel size 27.5. I'm looking to upgrade to a Santa Cruz, mainly for a better fit. I feel small on my bike if that makes sense. Hightower and Tall Boy might be my next bike. The lower link being tight catching rocks and mud is a big negative for me though.

  • @TheAllEngineering
    @TheAllEngineering3 жыл бұрын

    That lower link setup is a mud and stone magnet, and it also requires heavier sections in the frame. Also having the bottom bracket hanging outside the frame triangulation in no mans land also requires heavier sections in the frame to make up for its inherent lower strength. You would find it hard to keep up with xc bike on this because of the 30T granny chainring. Going to larger ones will probably have an adverse effect on pedaling efficiency.

    Funny comment about the heat, I used to live on Long Island until 08/2015, now I live in NC and during the summer its mid 90's all the time so took me a while to adjust. sweat just runs off me sometimes. I can tell you the roads here at least in my area have no shoulder so road riding SUCKS but plenty of green and blue trails around for some fun, on vacation next week so heading to Dupont Park for a few days.Any opinion on the Conti Trail King? My 2018 Spectral has Maxxis DHF 2.6 front and Recon in rear, I have a tube in the rear now and just ordered 2 new Trail King with the Apex protection 2.4 for 75.00 shipped so wondering how they will compare to the Maxxis? 2019 Spectral comes with 2.4 so I thought I would give them a shot, I am just an intermediate rider and an in shape 63

    Great review! I'm looking for a great "all rounder" - I'm an older guy riding the west coast trails on Vancouver Island where there's lots of chunk and this will probably be my last bike before going electric. Your comments on the climbing ability were really helpful - I demo'd the Django and loved the way it climbed, the Scott Genius was fantastic but way too pricey. I was leaning Ripmo but I am definitely going to try the new HT out. I rode a 2018 HT demo and didn't care for it, but is sounds like the upgrades will address my complaints. Cheers

    Nice review. After demo'ing a slew of bikes last year, I went with the previous model HT for my first trail bike. I figured that the next model HT would be too long and slack for steep & tight cornering (up and down). And this new HT is quite long/slack for its travel. Did you ride the new HT on any steep switchbacks? If so, how was it?

I’m in the Hudson Valley of NY (Across the Hudson from HPN)so same kind of trails you ride. Do you think a ST bike like the Ripley , Trail 429, or Tallboy is all I need? My Stumpjumper was the standard 29’er with 150F/140R, and it was a little sluggish in the tight stuff, but not bad. Will the other mid travel (SB130, Hightower, and Ripmo)bikes pedal and handle quicker than the Stumpjumper or am I better off just going Tallboy, Trail 429, or the Ripley route?

Great video but in the long run you get what you pay for and I understand direct brands are cheaper but VPP I think is a lot better then Horst-Link super planted better small bump and better feeling IMO
