Thanks for the review, always conflicted in the ML sound. I don’t understand why people say it is based on the 4Runner. I get I watch too many review videos :) From what I understand there are actually very few shared components between gx and 4Runner. Thanks for calling out in the graphic that is actually the Lexus version of the LC Prado.

I have a 2008 gx470 luxury with the ML 8 speaker system. Still sounds amazing compared to a lot of current audio systems. The bass is no joke. I can imagine what 9 more speakers could do to create noise separation.

I instantly was like man this looks like Michigan and it is haha. I work in Ann Arbor at Toyota Research Institute as a test driver working mostly on Lexus. Can’t wait for you to be able to try out the 2021 IS350 F sport (especially with the new Mark Levinson sound system)!

The video sound is pretty good, beyond my imagination

The preowned 2017 GX that I bought my wife had the exact exterior/interior color she wanted but although it was the premium model, it didn't come with the ML system. Since it's primarily her car, she didn't care as much and as she usually listens to podcasts, I don't think she will notice a difference. I'm hoping I can get some semblance of better sound by replacing the speakers with higher quality sets. But I agree, the ML system sounds incredible.

Mark Levinson is an independent company, like Harmon/Kardon, Bose, Bang&Oulfson, etc. Mark Levinson systems often cost around $20,000.

This is my kind of review. Sub’d! Also in the market for a used gx460 but I don’t think you can get the ML with the base trim, only the luxury trim. I don’t want the air suspension as it’s more expensive to replace down the line.

Thanks A-a-ron! (Love the name :P) I think you're right. However, the air suspension apparently isn't a huge deal on the 460s like it was for the 470s. Chris over at TheTopher has a GX460 and knows all about 'em. You should check him out!

It’s a Lexus version of the Land Cruiser Prado, which is not sold in the US market. Not 4Runner. Although it is similar to the 4Runner in many aspects.

the Lexus and toyota JBL sounds are notoriously "low", for people who are used to the bombastic American car audio systems, but vrery clear and natural. My LEX570 is at 37 usually but i do wish I could keep it at 30.

Sounds good. I like my durangos HK though it has all the bass. LOL I will admit though if you dont adjust durangos hk’s it doesn’t sound great but you can make the bass normal at lowest settings.

Waiting on my 2022 gx460 black line edition which is based of the premium package so i won’t be getting the ML. I’ve heard it good but it’s not a deal breaker. Being I hate chrome the black line is ideal for my preference. Hope I don’t regret not having the ML. Awesome video

Actually haven't had a chance to try that one! I'm sure it's very good, but the Harman is quite good as is, so unless you're balling out (and got the V-8), I would likely pass on the B&W.

Great review - thank you. Can anyone speak to how the base (non-ML) stereo compares to this GX 460 Mark Levinson...is there a significant difference? Would love to purchase a current Black Line edition but it is not available with the ML... which means the decision is Premium Plus with ML or Black Line. Looked into aftermarket system (with BlackLine Edition), but was told by every installer not really possible to do much aftermarket-wise in GX. Thanks!

I'm in the exact same boat.... I did go to a dealer and listen to both. But that was only ~10 mins in each vehicle. I did notice the ML was nicer........ (and quite amazing) - but I'm not sure if there are some 'easy' upgrades that can make the stock system sound as good or better.

@@Questtt3 - I’ll have to give it another listen. It certainly wasn’t *bad*, like the new Bronco’s base system. In fact I’m not positive if it was better or worse than the Defenders 400 watt sound system; since I listened to them weeks, if not months apart. But the ML system has been the best I’ve heard in any SUV over these past few months of my search. With 2nd to perhaps the Grand Cherokee’s Alpine system.

@@billfrigo7602 Thanks Bill - hearing your impressions and comparisons are very helpful. Sounds like, while the non-ML is not bad as you said…the ML system really impressed you. Without the ability to really improve the base system (non-ML)…now knowing that the ML system is really that good…really comes down to what one values more…Blackline aesthetic or considerably better (excellent?) ML sound system. If both not an option…one can always make some aesthetic mods, but a great sound system can make a considerable difference in traffic and long trips.Thanks Bill!

The gx 460 is the 2nd mark Levison system best behind it

Coming from a trd pro the ML is significantly better than the JBL. But not as good as the Harmon kardon system on my ram 1500. I was a bit let down going from the HK to the ML. Expected more from my $62k GX :-(

We ended renting one and yes the sound system was the best we’ve heard. Better than the XC90 Bower & Wilkins especially the bass.

Do the old ones have the same system? Or is it upgraded every year?

No I do not. Unfortunately it was a pre-pro and didn't have the final sound system tuning, but the latest MLs have been disappointing.

Even in luxury model you have to pay 1000+ to option it.

Very comparable, possibly a bit more natural than the Volvo. Both very good.

Hopefully good, because the recent Mark Levinson systems I've tested haven't lived up to this GX.

Wouldn’t buy the Mark L system. I have a 2023 luxury GX 460 and once you’re playing your music above level 55 on the radio it will shut off. Took my GX to 4 diferente dealership in which the did all types of diagnostic, they change the amp, speaker, radio and even the amp. Nothing they can detect. Crazy thing is if your off and restart it the sound will come up. So annoying!!!!!!

I don’t think this even has the mark levinson system. There is no mark levinson logo anywhere. Every lexus equipped with ML has logo placed around the cd player. Sorry but this is most likely pioneer demo not ML

My uncle has a Lexus that’s also equipped with the ML system. They don’t really put their logos everywhere like Bose does.

if you called it a 4Runner... you surely dont know this vehicle.

What people are hearing when they watch this, is the sound through the speaker on their iPads. You can’t tell how good or bad it is unless you’re in the vehicle.
