2020 Kawasaki Ninja 650 - First impressions review ※ First Dates

#Kawasaki #KawasakiNinja
Thanks to the guys at Frasers Motorcycles of Gloucester I have the chance to take some of their demo bikes out for a quick spin (and they get some free publicity!). First up is the 2020 Kawasaki Ninja 650.
If you want to jump ahead to the walkaround and then jump back afterwards, go to 4:31 😊
Other timestamps:
0:00 Intro
2:10 Short motorway stretch
6:50 A little back lane fun
8:48 Bimbling at slow speeds/talk about electronics
10:12 A little look at the instruments
12:18 A bit more A-road riding
14:58 Last bit of back road scratching!
Please press the Like button if you think that this video is useful and it will be more likely to end up in front of people who are looking for a middleweight bike like this. Cheers!
I haven't ridden a modern middleweight in years and this bike was surprisingly fun! It could make a decent second bike for an experienced rider as well as a good choice for riders moving up the ranks or people who are short of leg or even looking to downsize.
Riding bikes that I'm not looking to actually buy is a whole new step for me in my KZread "career" lol - sorry if I sound like a salesman in places... I've got to work out how to present myself in these videos. I'm open to advice from my bike-reviewing peers! Anyway in the short time I had the bike nothing really stood out as needing to be criticised.

You're doing the right thing starting out on a small bike-I started on a 125 too then bumped up to a 500cc about 8 months later once I had my skills down and got some riding experience underneath my belt-this was many years ago.I think that ninja650 will be the perfect bike to upgrade too and I'm thinking of picking one up too next spring.

Nice video, did a pretty good job. Have to say I like Lambchops reviews and TMF;s somewhat, if they could be combined for me then it would be better, I did like that you had a list of things to say, can;t remember if you mention what type of engine it was? I don't really like twins, so would be nice to know when watching you, especially as you can't always tell from the exhaust sound now, what with the different firing patterns. Got a mate with an MT07, that sounds like a big ass V twin :) Looking forward to more, did you try any of the other dealers? Also are you going to have enough time in the week to ride yours, once you get into the reviews?

Thanks for your comments! The list of things I came up with were really just things that popped into my head while riding. Planning…. I think that’s probably the thing that separates the likes of me from the guys like TMF and Chops. I had no plan or scripts at all 😂 Just riding and getting a feel for it and seeing what features it’s got. I’m sure the presentation of the details is something I can work on, so that I can supply the pertinent pieces of information like engine configuration lol! I haven’t tried any other dealers, Frasers have enough bikes to keep me busy for a while I think! I won’t be riding each bike for long, at least not to begin with so they will be still plenty of time to ride mine as long as summer comes back 😊 P.S. while I said that I didn't have a script, the papers I held during the walk around were specs from the Kawasaki website so I had some details to hand :)

Just bought the exact same bike to the color last week. A leftover '20 with 0 km on the clock. It's my 4th 650. First one was a brand new 1979 Honda CB 650 4 cylinder. The second one was a beautiful 1983 Honda CX-650e european model that wasn't sold in the US. Ironically, there is a used 2018 CB 650 for sale on my street that I really wanted to like but found it too high for me and top heavy. For my height (5'-6, 1m68), the Ninja is lower to the ground and feels much lighter. I'm in eastern Quebec, Canada and I think that I prefer the brit videos. Your roads and riding style is more similar to what we do here. Thing is, our roads are mostly in bad shape and I may be getting old (I'm 62) but I wish for a softer and thicker seat and more wind protection to save my back and neck. Will see next year if I should spring for the taller windshield. I first was looking to get a Z or Ninja 400 but decided I was better to go straight for the 650 considering that it's physically just a tad bigger and heavier. Even the 650 is geared too short for my liking. It could be 5-10% taller and it would be perfect.

Hello Jean and I'm sorry for the slow response. I would still love to own an old honda four cylinder - I had a 400/4 many years ago and it sounded wonderful! You may know from my other videos that I own a 1989 Honda Bros 650 (known in the US as the Hawk GT) and it feels very small compared to modern bikes, even the Kawasaki Z650. Our roads are in poor shape over here too and it's frustrating to be paying all our taxes and have the roads in such a state. I really enjoyed my time on the Z650 and so I hope you are enjoying yours! Sound you might need o find a smaller rear sprocket (or bigger front) for a more relaxing ride - I'm sure the engine will handle it. I've just done the same on the Bros - I fitted a one tooth bigger front sprocket and it does make a worthwhile difference. Take care and ride safe!

@@RikkyTang Txs for your comments. Now 1538 km on the Ninja 650 and all is well. I ordered the taller Kawasaki windshield which is a good improvement but nothing to really write home about. I then put the small Puig deflector but I still get the wind at the top of my helmet and bugs in my visor. I should have gone for the medium deflector. Surprisingly, the bike is not too hard on my back but I do get some neck pain but again, it's manageable. My last ride wednesday was 225 km of beautiful fall country roads at speeds between 50 and 100 and the bike is perfect in this environment. I did push it to 115-120 on the highway and no problem there too. It's very flickable and easy to ride and more fun than those big and heavy cruisers. Fuel economy has been below 4L/100 km calculated since the beginning and it doesn't complain being fed a diet of unleaded regular. I had to look for what the Hawk GT 650 was. Didn't remember that one much as I was out of motorcycling then.

@@jeantheriault7783 Hello again Jean, I appreciate you coming back with an update to how things are going with the bike! Sounds like overall things are great and the bike is really working out for you. Find the right screen for a bike can be an expensive and long-winded (pardon the pun) process... I went through five different screens on my faired Suzuki Bandit and never found one that worked! But you have to keep plugging away. The fuel economy sounds great and you're getting on well with the handling it seems, great stuff! Ride safe 👍

Hi, great video. I'm about to buy a new 22 version of the 650. I love the look of the bike and it ticks all the boxes. I haven't been able to take it on a test ride. The only issue is whether it might be a bit too short on the saddle, I am 5 ft 20". I just hope it's not too short as I might get buyer's regret. I’m on the fence between the z650 and z900 Love the 900’s rider aids but curious why you would “second date” the 650 but not the 900. Thanks. Great videos!

  • @RikkyTang

    @RikkyTang

    3 жыл бұрын

Hi there Nak, well my choices about whether I'd like a second date or not depend of a few different things: it's partially the emotional connection to the bike, the way it performs and the way it looks. For me, I didn't love the looks of Z900 and I also felt that if was supposed to look like a "badass" motorcycle then the engine should perform a bit stronger. The bite didn't quite match the bark! The Z900RS has the same engine and I think the engine and the styling work much better together. So there is nothing really wrong with the Z900 but it just didn't really make me want to ride it again. The Z650 was a lot of fun - looks good and performs good for a 650 - that's why I like it 👍

There is a break in period, you're absolutely right... these are demo bikes (not for sale) and the guys who are loaning me the bikes understand that I have to disregard the break in procedures if I'm going to get a good feel for them, if they are not already run in. Demo bikes are a bit like hire cars... they usually get a hard life from day one! These rides only last a couple of hours - if I'm lucky enough to be able to keep a bike for a week or two in the future, then I'd certainly run it in properly first if I had to. I do have some mechanical sympathy 😊. Enjoy your new machine!

  • @RikkyTang

Nowadays motorcycle engines are generally well manufactured and very reliable so there is probably no harm in ignoring the break in procedures - Motorcyclist Magazine did a video where they sought to dispel the myths around breaking in an engine kzread.info/dash/bejne/qqSjyc6optzfj5s.html (the presenter had recently been injured by a firework explosion in that vid by the way) However the break in also helps protect the manufacturer if something fails in the engine during these first few hundred miles... sometimes there are mistakes or failures in materials or component construction in mass produced/high tolerance assemblies like a motorcycle engine (or other part of the chassis/transmission for that matter). In summary, its a good idea to stick to the recommendations, but after a couple of hundred miles it probably won't hurt to give the engine a few more revs once in a while - that's what I do 👍 P.S. Someone will probably have a different opinion because to motorcyclists, a subject like this is as contentious as "which came first, the chicken or the egg" or "do you put milk in your cup of tea before or after the hot water" 😂

I have ridden her spiritedly but not mega crazy of the charts...I have let my new bike go through all the ranges of RPMs in various gears and all ranges of speeds from 0-120mph purely because I have watched two videos inc what you mentioned Ricky (motorcycle magazine) and feel that the break in rule is more there for legislation and red tape to cover the dealership/manufacturers. When I have exceeded 600miles and 1st dealership service I will look forward to maxing the revs out at higher speeds from time to time :) @ocean Tree @RikkyTang
