I'm glad that you do video reviews on these extremely boring vehicles, because (wait for cliche) *at the end of the day* , these are the vehicles that the vast majority of us end up purchasing. After spending hours and hours watching motor sports porn, and drooling over exotic cars and SUV's that we will never realistically be able to afford, reality must eventually be served.

I’m still not a fan of the 1.5 liter turbo charged engine & CVT transmission. I’d much rather have the RAV4 with a normally aspirated engine & conventional automatic transmission. Less ( & cheaper ) maintenance & both engine & transmission will last MUCH longer. CVT has to have fluids changed every 30,000 miles & you cant repair them if they go bad. Also, there is still oil dilution problems no matter what Honda says. I own a Honda Civic but it has the bulletproof 2.4 liter engine

  • @Coolsam2000

Yea exactly. People in northern US states and in Canada still have oil dilution issues despite the software update Honda provided to "fix" the issue. I really dislike CVTs holding ratios like that; it's entirely marketing so the buyers who wouldn't buy manual transmissions can still feel like it's "normal". However, it's removing the one advantage CVTs have - the continuous variability.

I dislike the fake shifts, but stay light on the throttle, and it will just dully vary)

CVTs are popular in Japanese vehicles over DCT because of different road conditions. In Japan, we have tons of stop& go situation, so DCT's not so great initial acceleration isnt desired. On the other hand, CVT doed smoothe acceleration. It may not suit for Americans though.

My wife and I have a 2019 and it is very nice to drive and has been wonderful except for two issues, 1. The infotainment screen is buggy and turns off randomly, also my phone takes an eternity to pair although that might be on my phone not the car, 2. The emergency braking system will randomly flash and apply the brakes when there is no on in front of you, our Honda dealership says they have had several complaints but can't replicate anything. There is a class action about this going against Honda right now. If they fix that software this car is a total keeper.

There is a "sport" trim here in Canada but it is really just looks and options and not really performance. The sportiest thing is that it gets 19" rims without being the touring or black edition. My almost 70 year old parents just got one (Sport 2020) and it really is as is said in the review. Does everything very competently but doesn't blow the doors off in one specific category. They cost less than a RAV for the same general trim level and not by only a couple hundo. The interior is fantastic and as an owner of the 3rd gen, this 5th gen is a massive upgrade in basically every way. Except still no real sport.

Especially when in USA you guys can get RAV4 and CX-5 with 2.5l NA gasoline and a conventional torque converter AT. Where I live, Japan, only Mazda still offers that. I really hope new CX-5 offers more trunk. Fortunately there is still CX-8 that is a great SUV. The only SUV that fits all my requirements: standard AT, good engine, AWD and usable trunk. New Forester will be 1.8T soon, RAV4 comes with a CVT in Japan and smaller engine.

You hardly touched base on the oil dilution issue. Huge problem. What did Honda do to fix the issue in the next model years? Also what is the downsize of a turbo rather than a naturally aspirated engine???? There have been many who have said this engine will not last as long as Honda's other naturally aspirated engines of the past. Also, the shifting sounds heard in the cabin, were these artificial sounds put in the cabin by Honda so it sounds like a standard transmission? Also some buyers are using the CRV to haul small RVs. Pros or negatives on hauling with a CVT transmission ? I still own a 2009 3rd generation CRV which I bought new and have had so little problems with it that I continue to drive it. I would not buy this new generation with the Turbo. Makes the engine do double the workload in small displacement and thus will wear out the engine prematurely. Also the oil dilution issue is a problem and I have yet to hear from Honda what they have done to rectify it. Software is not it. It was a manufacturing defect with the cylinder displacement. Honda has not come clean.

Good and thorough review- there's a 2013 CR-V LX AWD sitting in the garage (my better half's daily driver) and this review is helpful for deciding on a possible replacement. Is the 1.5 Turbo oil dilution issue really an issue or has it been solved? We've had to deal with the cold weather VTC issue (oil bleed off from the solenoid) on our current 2.4L and can't say I was very impressed with the way Honda and especially the original selling dealer dealt with it. Keep up the great work- the breadth (econobox to supercar and everything inbetween) and depth (who else puts the vehicle on the lift and tells what's what) of your reviews is beyond impressive. The production values of the videos make them easy and a pleasure to watch.

I test drove the turbo CR-V a few months ago and was not impressed. It seemed ugly inside and out, slow since the turbo was more for improving gas mileage, and the front seats were not very comfortable. They have had some problems with gasoline in the engine oil, especially during cold weather that might be fixed now, maybe. The only thing that I liked was the big speedometer numbers, aimed at older drivers losing some of their close vision, or at least the rapid switch from seeing far to close and back.

My mom was looking to get a SUV since she needs to carry a lot of things for work. Our options in the price range were the cx5, rav4, and the crv. We settled on the CRV for basically the main points you outlined. The easiest way I broke it down was, the CRV has the most space, most comfort. The CX5 is more sporty, less space, slightly more expensive with less standard features. The RAV4 is just outdated, less standard features, less space than the CRV, no android auto was a huge killer for day to day use, the only upside to going rav4 would be reliability and maintenance. We ended up going with the CRV because of its overall package and usability. There wasn't enough a reason in tradeoffs to go with the other 2 options over the CRV. It is extremely good as a comfortable daily driver. We got the 2018 ex-L trim which was $35k canadian and I truly believe it is worth that price. The only real issue we have with the car is the outdated infotainment. From the factory, it is just slow and laggy. We only use the android auto in it, so its kind of set and forget with everything else but it would have been great if honda put the new accord infotainment into this refreshed crv. It is the only downside of this car. If you want sportiness, go CX5. You want reliability, go RAV4. You want all rounder, go CRV.
