I used to have a new V-strom 1000 and now I have a 500F. Once I took a 500F for a good test in the twisties I realized that I had made a mistake. The 500F was MUCH easier and less stressful to ride and way more fun to ride at legal speeds than the Beast. It's the ease of handling that makes the bike really special. I also like the wide spread of power. In that regard it's a smaller bike that rides more like a big one. After 50 years of riding there is nothing I would rather have. Bridgestone BT31's improved steering and grip greatly over the Dunlops.

Thank you Dan for your KZread content. Your style and presentation is always on point. Im new to motorbikes, started last August, lucky enough to pass my full license in September. Upgraded my mt125 to a Cbr500r 2020 model. Managed to get a new one for £4600. I love the looks of the bike and the power is spot on for new riders. Keep up the quality content. looking forward to your next one.

Had the 2021 version for about 3 months now and love it!

@@christianoberlies this bike competition are the ninja 400 and ktm rc 390, both of them smoke it, the problem is the bike is way too heavy for the hp, the ninja 650 is on another level, wayyy more sporty , but for the every day ride, the ktm is a pain in the ass (literally), while the ninja 400 and this bike are comfy

Owned a 2013 mod for 3 years. Most comfy bike I have driven for a long time! Super brakes too!! Power is absolutely enough!!

I have a 2017 just hit 36k of course it’s my everyday commuter. Still just as smooth have had zero problems with it just done the valves have been keeping up with services such a great little bike!

I have done a track day in my 2020 Honda CBR500R, it was easy to handle and worked like a dream. The suspension did not feel like it was bottoming out and I felt that the grip levels were more than enough. Over all my experience with that bike has been amazing, it is fast enough (more than enough to lose your license) and great for touring due to it's upright ish position. I highly recommend this bike for A2 license and as a starter bike.

i slapped a mivv gp slipon with the killer in on my 2018 cb500f and it sound really good, you can even hear the intake at about 5k rpm

Ridden a few of the CB500 range as courtesy bikes and the engine's a super smooth peach and packs a decent punch. The sort of bike that will never get on your nerves re weight, size, day to day use etc. A motorcycle that does everything well, from touring to commuting to hammering it.

Had a 2015 model. Ride position super comfortable. Clutch lever is so easy to live with in the city. My 04 600rr clutch was a nightmare in the city.

Interesting review. I agree it looks fantastic. Looking forward to your review of a Triumph Trident 660.

@@jas9590 its a big difference, but still manageable for a newer rider. Its alot nicer to ride on the highway then the 500

I rode a 2017 one at the Ron Haslam race school (Donington), great fun and really flickable. I rode the CBR650R at my next visit in 2020, both great on the track.

Quality stuff :) Been here since pretty early and still impressed each video.

Great review Dan! I’m looking to get back into riding after being a non riding civilian for about ten years and I’m stuck between getting a ninja 300, ninja 400, r3, and this amazing bike. Ninja 300 with 0 miles on em are going for absolutely cheap at the dealer where I live. Has a 17 litre gas tank which I like. When I saw the ninja 400 I didn’t fall in love with it. R3 is a brilliant little (mini) superbike. So many choices these days for little cc bikes it’s hard to choose.

I'm glad I could find a longer review of this bike! I live in Japan and here the CBR250rr is much more popular so most reviews are about that bike. Here we have the 400 instead of the 500 though.

Yes, this bike is really aimed at the European market to fit with our licencing systems. Surprised it's not offered in Japan though

@@AAARREUUUGHHHH We do have the rebel 500 but people just don't seem to buy them. I think the gap between the 400 and 500 is too small ( like 2HP maybe?) for it to make sense, especially with both the CBR650R and the 600RR on the market.

I started my big bike journey on a CBR500R. Had it for 4 years a great little bike. Not the most exciting or best any anything it’s a great bike to live with.

It look so sharp 🔥.

Seems like a light and nimble bike. I already have and R1 and Husqvarna 701 and this CBR should be a great complement when cruising around city or going to visits friends. What is the milage of this CBR?

I had a 2016 CBR500r and did a 5 country tour on it. It's a great little starter bike. I now have a 2020 CBR650r and it's a completely different feeling bike, but that little 500 can hold it's own!

Having owned both (2019 500R still own and 2,700 miles / 2019 N400 sold after doing 6,500 miles), here are my thoughts. Seating position is sportier on the 500R but still very comfortable. N400 is more upright with clip ons above triple clamp. 500R looks like a bigger bike (especially with the 120 front and 160 rear tires). 500R seat is more comfortable although I spent $200 on Kawasaki extended seat (extra 1" of foam) which regained the lead. N400 is quicker and engine is way more fun to wind out. Not a fan of 500R low redline while N400 screams to 12k rpm. Heavier 500R more stable on highway. I was very impressed with the handling of the 500R. Headlights are better on the N400 for night riding. Both have LEDs but 500R doesn't seem as bright and projects mainly in front. N400 dispersed the light to the sides better. Fuel economy and range go to the 500R. I think I got low 60 mpg on N400 and get 72 mpg on 500R. I personally like the dash 1,000 times better on N400. Not only the design and how it lights up, but if you even look at the 500R dash, scratches will appear before your eyes. Beware, the more I tried to clean it, the worse it became...just don't touch it...blow the dust off or something. I like the transmission about the same on both bikes. Brakes are close I think, but would have to give the advantage to 500R. Exhaust on 500R sounds better during normal riding, but at redline, N400 gets the nod. Last but not least, the price of the N400. What a deal. Can't go wrong with either one being a first bike or commuter bike. Fun factor goes to N400 though.

@@vtecninja6363 If I could go back I would put some of that 3M clear protective film over the dash, the very softest, brand new microfiber cloth still leaves fine scratches on that plastic. Test rode a N400 also; agree with everything you've said. CBR500R is the better commuter/all-rounder/freeway bike, N400 is faster and more fun. Tight sweep on the N400 clip-ons hurt my wrists after 10 minutes of riding. Try before you buy if you can people.

Tempted to get another CBR500R. I miss commuting on mine, knowing how frugal it was, and with my recurring chronic leg pains, commuting on my R1 is just a bit too much for my achilles and flat feet. When my R1 was out of action for quite some time, and the 5-hundy was my sole bike, it made for a lot of shits and giggls, going everywhere pinned. Reminded me of the days when I was keeping up with the big boys on my ZXR250C, albeit latter being a 18500RPM screamer with about 40bhp. That being said, I do also have a Fazer thou doing nothing in my garage, so might as well just service and MOT that.

That is a very good looking bike. Honda seem to be getting their styling act together these days! These sub 500cc bikes are FUN and very good to learn how to really ride a bike, not relying on brute power and torque.

I like this guy, I'm certainly subscribing. I am getting a 2020 Honda cbr500r as my first bike, I'm so excited. After this review I can't wait to get it.

Good looking bike. Honda styling department is getting their act together lately. These sub 500cc bikes are FUN and teach you how to really ride a bike, not just relying upon power and torque. If I were young again 😩 with one bike I think I'd go for a larger bike that could be made A2 compliant so the lifespan of the purchase would be longer.

Seriously. Between this, the neo cafe bikes and the new Fireblade, they're knocking it out the park. Not a fan of cruisers but even the Rebel looks great!

What bike is better for a beginner the duke 390 or the cbr500r in your opinion. So far I have only ridden the duke 390 and I absolutely love that thing, but I miss a bit more power/torque :D

Sweet bike and nice review, liked how you explained and broke things down clearly. I love the Honda's due to their durability and planted feeling. You throw Dunlop Q3 Plus tires and an Akropovic exhaust and your good to go.

I saw in other review videos that the cbr500r doesn't has a gear indicator on the dashboard. But this one has.

I watch all these reviews, and this is a good one per your usual work, as am thinking of putting an all rounder in the garage, but apart from that tasty new Aprilia middle-weight, I keep circling round to the Street Triple... seems up to scratch in every way...

Same, but mine sounds terrible with the stock exhaust really wish Honda gave the 500 a different crank shaft or engine to make it sound better.

4 cylinders and around 500 to 650cc in a good frame is all you need to have a lot of fun legally on UK roads.

Not my kid of bike. Not enough power and not a fan of super sport bikes but I do love the matte black and red. Looks delicious. P.s you should have more subs, great content.

Judging from the Z650 I'd say the Ninja 650 would have a bit more torque. All depends what you want ultimately.

@@Dan_B_Rides the Ninja does have that little bit extra, particularly on the motorways (as well as that gorgeous TFT dash on the 2020 model) but as Dan points out, running costs for the CBR are a whole lot cheaper. I almost fell off my chair when I saw the difference in insurance premiums between the two machines!

I have a cbr500r on an A2 licence it’s amazing - it’s nimble, comfortable, looks stunning and just a whole lot of fun. I ride in a group who all own 1000s and it’ll keep up in the Bends without a doubt

IMHO the reason this bike is not very popular (especially in Asia) is because cbr 250rr sp qs. Many video on yt compare these 2 bikes in a drag test, it doesn't have a big gap of these bikes. And with a cheaper price you can get quickshifter, and riding mode, and have a sportier driving position, and etc. At cbr 250rr sp qs.

Are aftermarket exhausts as regulated as stock exhaust?

Looks a nice bike, i have the CB650R. Will you be able to get hold of a triumph trident?

Most definitely. I should be going to the launch in December depending on lockdown.

Looks largely unchanged from the '15 or '16 facelift. I had a '14 500F. Nice bikes. Light and nimble. Comfortable for 4hr trips didn't go much further in one day 50+ mpg with 170lb 6' rider

Ride again with sc project exhaust pliss that sound must be crazy i think 😂

I'm torn between yamaha r3 and cbr500. I think your comment on the throttle being snappy was the deal breaker for me. Hate that when pulling away from lights or need to slow ride.

How much is fuel conscumtion in city riding and also highway ?please tell me

I am 19 and can't afford a bike for now. Hope that one day I can call the cb500r my own and ride the bike just thinking about my teenage days for a moment.

Short riders have a great advantage on sports bikes , they never feel so much crouched as tall riders on long rides

Does look good, tho for me the CB500F would be my choice of everyday bike. And nipping to Honda UK the F is quite cheap and looks better than I remembered. And that 17l tank - handy. Maybe if commuting ever becomes popular again I'll seriously look at it rather than return to rail travel.

I tell you what mate, you might end up a bit cold or a bit wet on some days, but I guarantee getting a train has never put a smile on your face. You'll get get where you're going faster and not to mention having options. Like in summer when you're finished for the weekend and go the long way home. It's the same tank on the CBR500R. I ride like a twat and get 62~ MPG, even on ride outs down country lanes.

I wish it could be slightly lighter so it could pull off 0-60 I. Like around 4 seconds it would have so much more potential but all in all a brilliant reliable bike

Unfortunately, due to the dumb A2 regulations, if the bike was any lighter they'd have to reduce the horsepower. Same reason why you won't get a Duke 390 putting out 47BHP

@@duc1755 it’s not worth it I know a few people who spent a lot on upgrading the 500. You won’t get that much more out of it. Keep it close to stock as it is very reliable.

Haha, bumps? In Afrika we only worry about the massive potholes and eroded road edges. Your roads look relatively superb. Nice bike, always liked the smaller ones.

It's not too aggressive actually, you are leant over a little more on the CBR500R but it's pretty comfortable.

Just enough lean for freeway speeds. Bikes that are 'too' upright can be less comfortable at 70mph - You end up having to either engage your core, hang onto the bars, or both. When I ride mine, my wrists have a very small amount of weight on them at lower speeds and basically none at freeway speeds. (Which is perfect imho - edit)

I'm 14 and I'm saving up for my own motorcycle should I get this one

How's the bike been for you?

Would you recommend this as a second bike? I currently have a cb300r and love the bike to bits but as a more permanent option without breaking the bank this bike seems to be great, this or the cb500f.

Both are great options to be honest. 500F has more comfort but the 500R is still pretty comfortable too.

I honestly think 500s are a very good choice for the uk roads and highly underated, people that slate them just wouldnt be able to keep up in the twisties on their bigger bikes some even my 125 🤣😉 i am passing my full licence soon and looking for a daily as my only full time vehicle that is comfy for 2 and sporty for my after work fun. In your opinion what would you say are 3 good choices seeing as you have ridden a whole variety of machines, looking for more than 250cc im done with not overtaking or needing 3 miles to do it 🤣 I was thinking the africa twin but i love the feeling of shifting the gears. Also i do like the triumph street triple think they are a very versatile bike. Just wanna hear your opinion tbh, thanks mate ride safe and look after yourself 👊 Love the vids and i really want to do the same, review and ride all kinds of motorcycles and make it my career somehow. CB500X as a do it all machine.

It's a legend already of a road sports bike already imho If you have space and the pocket money these cost (after the initial cost) buy one Brilliant Video Best regards Shaun

I've been considering this or paying more for the 650 for a commuter. Funnily the insurance in London for the 500 is more expensive

In regards to the tinted visor (love it) what are the laws on it because I really want one but I’ve heard that it’s a bit of a grey area

Technically illegal but in 20 something years I've never had a police officer mention it. If you go out before dark just make sure you have your clear visor with you so you can swap them out.
