2020 C8 Corvette HTC Driver Review...Plus Z51 vs Non-Z51 Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today's video is a review of my almost 1,700 mile driving experience in a 2020 Corvette Hard Top Convertible. Having driven over 4,000 miles in my 2020 Corvette Coupe, I talk about what I like about each from a driver's point of view. The Coupe has the Z51 package while the HTC does not, so the final segment of the video is my review of the two variants and whether you might want or need the Z51 option or not. I'd be glad to answer any questions you may have, so feel free to ask in the comments section. Enjoy the drive!

This remains a pivotal video for all who have considered, and will consider coupe versus HTC C8. So very valuable!!! I know it was in our decision to get our first HTC in literally 53 years. Thanks so much Jeremy!

Love the hardtop convertible. It is a lot easier than having to remove the targa manually. I also like that you can roll down the back window for more engine sound. Pretty cool!

Fantastica value-able video. Ever since I first read listened to it right after it was made last September, its usefulness for anyone considering getting an HTC was terrific. It is so informative. Listening to it now nine months later as we are planning on getting our first convertible in literally six decades (except of course for our motorcycles), once again this video is so informative. Not that there were any doubts before, but this video cinched our Z06 will be an HTC. Great job Jeremy!

Jeremy this is your former SWOC VP here. Awesome VLOGs and great information for everyone to digest and make a determination on which car people want, coupe or convertible. Think I will wait and see what the Z06 looks like before getting rid of my 17 GS. I just like the look of a slightly wider body with bigger tires. Glad to see you are doing well

Excellent video, we picked up our 2023 HTC on 08/10/22. When I parked it for the winter, we live in northern Illinois and don’t drive it why the salt is on the roads. We have the performance exhaust, front lift, magnetic ride, 3LT, front splitter, low spoiler, and non Z51. We will never track it and I don’t like the summer only tires, they are horrible when the temperature drops below 55. We drive, with the top down if it’s not raining even in the 30’s. I agree with your assessment of the HTC, being the ultimate road car, everything you said I have experienced, including leaving the back window just that partway upward the bottoms out at, and it keeps the wind out. I don’t know where you live, but hopefully I will get together with you sometime, we just love this car love to drive I’m 75 years old and this is the best car I have ever driven, thanks again for the video

@@jagwelborn Can you give me any info on how long it took you to receive your 2020 HTC VETTE? I orderd mine back on Aug.5th 2019, here in Florida. They told me, even with production yr extended to Dec.2020, bc of the UAW Strike & Chinese Virus...I wont get my Vette till March of 2021...& thats after I had to reorder the car from a 2020 order#, to a 2021 order#, & not loose my place in line. My 2020 is/was in #1100 order status, so forget about gettin it. My only option was to place a New 2021 order & I'd be put in the front of all the new 2021 orders. If you are planning to race or track your C8 then the Z51 package is a definite must . If not then there's is no need for the Z51 package. One thing to consider when ordering the convertible i believe the option is the same price as the Z51 option. Another great thing about the convertible you won't have to worry about rain getting into the engine compartment unlike the coupe.

Completely agree with your comments about "need" for Z51 package. I am very surprised at the % of 2020s ordered with Z51. I gotta believe half those people have no clue about all the Z51 specifics. This is especially true regarding the summer tires. I wonder how many Z51 owners will drive their summer tires during the cold and even snow of winter....a big mistake.

People who drive in the rain during spring summer or fall have much less adhesion than driving the z51 in winter months. These are NOT cup 2 tires these are P4s tures and they are fine. The internet has done many z51 owners a favor because so many are selling off the p4 s z51 tires at half price Thanks guys! .

Excellent video, thanks for sharing. My decision is going to be hard. I love the look and interior feel of the HTC with the 3rd window adjustability and convenience of putting the top up immediately with a press of a button. Especially when those stray rain showers pop up. The HTC with its Nacelles looks exotic more so with the spoiler less non z51 package and that’s how I’d order it. That being said I do love seeing that exposed engine in the coupe!! Decisions!

THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! You just stopped my OCD/ADD squirrel brain from overthinking all of my build decisions and saved me $5k. I've got my name on a wait list, talked to the dealer and sent him my non-Z51, 3LT build (there's also a supply issue w/ MagShocks)... he convinced me to go Z51, 2LT... even though i'd never track the car. But cooler heads and experiences prevail. When the time to actually sit down and order my car comes up.. it's back to the Z51, 3LT. I normally drive an F250 anyways so the non-Z51 is more than enough for me!!! Thanks again!!

As a C7 convertible owner - was wondering about headroom with top up....thanks for confirming it's better than the C8 coupe since no halo bar. 100% agree that Z51 isn't needed for most people. Thank you for another realistic review. Myself, I wish Corvette would break out the components of the Z51 package like they did the exhaust. I would like a heavy duty cooling option and also like the bigger brakes as a start. I ordered several new Corvettes starting in 1979 and you could order these individual options back then. Just as I ordered my Z06 in 2017, I didn't want "all" the make-up of the Z07 package, I individually ordered the complete aero package, the carbon ceramic brakes and also gray colored calipers and forgoed the more harsh track suspension and Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. Corvette listens to their customer base, which is fanatastic, so maybe this will be possible one day. Thanks again Jeremy for taking the time to make the Corvette world a better place.

I Like the non-spoiler profile better as the rear design is perfect! My current car is a Z51mildly custom coupe with a blip for a spoiler and it works just fine. NO tracking!..What about the cooling system? Have you experienced any overheating? AND your exhaust is sweet. Thank you so much. Since I was pushed back to a 2021 and now available with MRC w/o Z51. I started to look at the HTC. I think it looks better without the spoiler. Sounds like I made the right decision. Extremely informative review! I have an Audi S5 convertible and it also has a windscreen. I do not know if anyone can answer this question, but I wonder if there is much additional noise on a C8 as it does not have a windscreen option. I have found a huge difference over the years on both noise and air turbulence at highway speeds on convertibles that have windscreen options. Normally windscreens offer huge benefits in these areas. Also have neck warmers in the Audi. Would be cool if Chevy adds that option in the future.

The only demo I would have liked in addition would be the sound system with the top down. Perhaps for a next video? Thank you! I thought about doing a segment on the Bose sound system, but that's hard to convey via video because it doesn't translate well through whatever speaker system the viewer is watching on. It's a fantastic sound system and the best Corvette has ever had, though. For the MSRC on the non-Z51 for 2021, my first opinion is that it is unnecessary. However, I may change my mind after I have a chance to drive a 2021 with it.

Very informative video! I’m struggling to decide between the coupe and convertible and with or without Z51 and this video answered some questions regarding the convertible. How do you like the two tone red and black interior? Do you think that the red parts will wear well? I only have experience with black interiors so far but that interior is high on my list. One fellow that I spoke with at Carlisle had a natural dipped interior and he said that one downside to it is that the dye in his blue jeans leaves ink marks on the seats. With the two tone seats, that should be less likely. Also, this may only be a concern with the two lighter colors.

I drove a 2022 Z51 from November until last week. I took delivery of a 2022 non Z51 today. The difference in the tightness of the steering seems huge to me. I don’t know if I can tell the difference in the suspension but I’m extremely disappointed with the steering. I drive in sport mode all the time and immediately I noticed a difference in tightness from the Z51. It felt more like tour mode in the Z51. And track mode felt more like sport mode in the Z51. I remember track mode the steering was extremely tight like it was almost hard to steer. I even went into Z mode and put everything on the max settings to see if that tightened things up. It seemed more like sport mode in the Z51 but maybe not as much-I’m not sure. Then I started to wonder if having everything in max in Z mode is just the same as driving in track mode since all the settings look the same and if it’s even ok to drive with these settings or track mode on the street. I’ve read so many posts saying never to use track mode on the street. Am I missing something or is there a huge difference between the feel of the Z51 and the non Z51? At most I’ve seen people talk about maybe a 10 percent difference in the feel so I didn’t think it would matter to me. I don’t think it’s in my head since I wasn’t even looking for it to feel different. If it truly is that different of a feel is there anything I can do to get back to that Z51 feel? It’s mostly the tightness of the steering I think since I don’t know if I would notice a suspension difference. Note: Both the Z51 and non Z51 have mag ride.

OH NOW!! people are loving the convertible. Ya know for YEARS, theirs always been this ridiculous backlash against people who owned convertibles. As a convertible owner myself. (Saleen Mustang speedster) i absolutely would not have it any other way. Driving around top down is G L O R I O U S ! ! ! ! who cares about what other people think!. if they truly knew what the experience was like few would opt any for hard tops. With the top down you feel like your flying, Good wind management as this c8 doesnt bring the issues of buffeting and wind noise. its a serene driving experience. And when you get on the gas... the sounds are incredible. Now.. the only real drawback of a convertible is the Sun not really for yourself, youl have a tan for certain but rather its about interior care. without question your interior (leather seats) will need to be looked after because the UV rays of the sun will take its toll on the interior. but if your knowledgeable and active in regards to proper maintenance and upkeep you will prolong the interior's life time. make no mistake, convertibles are fantastic. Whats crazy cool about the c8 like most corvettes is the fact theyre all convertibles. so even with opting for a hard top you can remove the top. obtaining at least 80% of the experience found in a full blown convertible. The C8 is an amazing car. i do with it looked a bit better here and their but overall for what your getting its amazing. more than a steal.

The rocker panels have PPF and we also have the extended splash guards. I don't think the extensions are necessary if you have the splash guards and PPF.

@@jagwelborn thanks. It looks amazing. As a Kentuckian I’ve always had a goal of traveling to the museum for delivery. Time for that is quickly approaching. Thanks for your videos. Saw you on 615 video and this build blew me away. Thought I “needed” the high wing initially. You proved me wrong. Such a clean look.

@@jagwelborn I don’t really wanna fork over the money for PPF. Considering a good ceramic coat. Never had a car like this so just not sure how to treat it. I do know I’m going to drive it every day possible.

How's the wind noise in the convertible vs coupe (with top off)? Is the convertible so significantly better?

With the ability to lower the rear glass on the convertible, you have the benefit of allowing wind to flow through the car rather than swirling around the cabin in the coupe. It's not a deal breaker, but it certainly is more pleasurable at highway speeds.

question on the magnetic ride, i have a C7 and wished i had got it. it is useful on a non-Z51 touring C8 Convertible? i plan to wait for the 2022 to come out.

I don't think it's necessary because the ride is fantastic without it, but it will be even better I suppose with it when it becomes available on the 2021 models.

I had it on a c5. Now I have a C7 and wish I had it. My order for the HTC 2020 has it on it. I believe in it. It does make a difference.

Do you recommend the magnetic shocks for more comfort? I had an 03 with magnetic shocks. When shocks went out they were very expensive to replace.

Best ride for 2021 will be non-Z51 with MSRC. It's fine without it, in my opinion, because the best ride for the 2020 is the non-Z51. With it will just be another level of betterment.

Have a 2021 Convertible on order non Z 51. Do you suggest adding the mag ride? Is it worth the cost?

I don't really think it's necessary on the non-Z51. That said, it would be nice to drive a non-Z51 with MSRC once the 2021s come out to see how much of a difference it makes. But I'm very happy with the HTC without it.

Question Jeremy: some guys that have driven both the Z51 and non-Z51 (both in Sport mode) have said they can definitely tell the difference in steering, braking, and general handling - even on regular driving.... albeit maybe slightly ‘spirited’ driving in town and rural roads. Would you say that is true? They say the Z51 is definitely ‘tighter’ in its driving feel. A tad bit less lumbering and wallowie... if that’s a word.

Excellent questions! I'm going to take both out on some of the same roads for spirited driving so I can compare them in the same conditions and see what I notice.

Great Jeremy. There are many, many of us who will wait patiently for your Z51/no Z51 handling assessment comparo video. You are one of the rare few who can drive the two types back-to-back and give a fair and honest seat-of-the-pants assessment. Truth is, as you know, most of us will not track the car... nor will we ever go 194 mph or 184 mph, but if the Z51 helps make us feel a tad bit more like we are Randy Probst on the track when we are ‘spiritedly’ driving the mountain twisties, then maybe it is worth it (at least for some of us, who are buying the vehicle for little more than a weekend fun sports car). My thinking is that a Z51 must brake a little better, corner a little better (less roll with stiffer springs), and be a bit stiffer and more responsive with steering inputs... plus it’ll accelerate a tad quicker with the shorter rear gear. If not, it wouldn’t make sense that it is touted as a better track vehicle? All ‘theory’. Your ‘objective reality’ counts for more.

Put another way... would a Z51 get around a typical track faster than a non-Z51 (with the Z51 NOT getting the extra DCT quarts or camber adjustments or high-temp brake fluid or brake ducts). If the answer is “yes”, then the Z51 could actually make the car more fun to drive in the canyons, mountains, or trying to beat a NYC taxi from Grand Central to the Javits Center. It’d be awesome if the comparo of both could be made on the same AS tires... but I know that ain’t likely to happen (many of us might like a Z51 with the base vehicle’s tires.... me included).

In researching the C8 suspension tuning specs, I’ve been told the Z51 springs are 46lbs stiffer in both the front and the rear. The stabilizer bar in the rear is thicker (stiffer) for the Z51, but the front bar is the same for both vehicles. I presume the Z51 rear bushings must be beefier as well. This is what I’m told anyway. We already know the brakes are stronger in a Z51. Thus, my intuition is that the Z51 will feel ‘tighter’ in a driving comparison.... with a feel of quicker steering responsiveness and slightly less body roll and dive in hard cornering and braking. I’m positive the base (non-Z51) C8 drives just great... maybe better than any sports car most of us have ever driven... especially if it had the magride option... but the question du jour here is simply whether the daily/weekend non-track driving feel of a Z51 is noticeable, as compared to a base car.... either in a moderate or perhaps significant way. If it’s not noticeable, with both in Sport mode, then I’m dumping the Z51 from my order. Good luck to Jeremy as our ‘test pilot’.
