2019 Volkl Kendo Ski Review

This week on Chairlift Chat we take a closer look at the 2019 Volkl Kendo. While it hasn't changed, its competitors kind of have... which changes how it's positioned among all the all mountain ski options.

    Great review I think you are spot on. I used to love the Kendo in bumps and on technical slopes (for the tail edge release you are talking about).

    Such hi hopes for the M5, I’ll just leave it there. Still love Volkl and edge control. Keep the videos coming and hopefully you can ski out here. Then again you guys had better snow than us last year.

    Usually isn't the case... but we had an amazing season last year! We had a couple thaws and some iffy weeks in January, but for the most part the season was awesome.

    Can you do a 90eight review? I’m looking for a ski that I can really carve on the groomed trails but also do some powder skiing out west. Thanks!

    We'll add it to the list, but there are a lot of skis to get to! In the meantime you should check out the results from our 2019 Ski Test: www.skiessentials.com/2019-ski-test?skis=2019-volkl-90eight-skis And we also have a 100Eight video review. A lot of that can be applied to the 90Eight, just think narrower and with camber compared to the 100Eight: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iHuJ09RrdKzJd7Q.html

    Hey Jeff, I demo'd the Kanjo and I really loved it! I was curious if the kendo could be a good option for me. I'm an intermediatte skier looking to become advanced. Should I check this ski out or just stay with the kanjo?

    The Kendo is definitely quite a bit heavier and stiffer than the Kanjo. Part of what makes the Kanjo fun is its fairly lightweight feel, which delivers high level of quickness. I'd say if you loved the Kanjo, stick with the Kanjo.

    Hey Jeff! I’ve been skiing for basically my whole life. I raced a bit in high school, but had to give it up due to other time commitments. I’ve been skiing on my old race tiger GS skis for almost 8 years now as I just didn’t feel like putting in the cash necessary to upgrade until now. I’m 6’4” 205lbs and ski mostly on the front side in the east, but am looking to go off trail a little more going forward and have more trips out west planned. I would say I’m fairly advanced and like to push my skis to go fast while also carving into quick turns. I’ve been looking at four possible upgrades in the above Kendo, Head Kore 93, Nordica Enforcer 93, and Blizzard Brahma. Do you have a preferred suggestion amongst these or should I be looking at a different model?

    Hi Alex! I think you'd really enjoy either the Kendo or the Enforcer 93. You're a pretty big guy, have a race background, and have 8 years of experience on GS skis. Because of that I think you'll appreciate having two full sheets of metal in your skis. Yes, the Brahma has two sheets as well, but I don't think the Brahma has the versatility you're looking for. Both the Enforcer 93 and the Kendo perform better (and easier) in soft snow compared to the Brahma. Between the Kendo and the Enforcer 93 you should ask yourself whether you want a slightly more maneuverable ski or a slightly stiffer and slightly more powerful ski. The Enforcer 93 would be the more maneuverable option, the Kendo is a little stiffer. Overall they're pretty similar, but the metal in the Enforcer 93 is thinner so it's lighter and a little softer flexing. It also uses more pronounced tip rocker. You'll be able to ski fast, hard, and aggressively on both, but that's where I feel the biggest difference between the Kendo and Enforcer 93. Hope that helps! SE

    Just demoed the Kendo and Bonafide. The Kendo carves great, but is a playful pussycat compared to the Bonafide. I feel like you have to be a bodybuilder to get that ski to turn. I bought the Kendo.

    Hey Jeff. I started skiing last year and progressed quite a bit and I would say I'm a comfortable intermediate skier. I love carving and improving on that but I wouldn't mind trying some back mountain at some point. What ski would you recommend? Also I'm about 5"5 150 lbs if that helps. Thanks in advance

    Hi Moe! The Kendo would probably be a bit much for you at this point in your ski career. Are you familiar with the new Rossignol Experience 88 Ti? That's a ski that is appropriate and approachable for an intermediate like yourself who is progressing quickly, but is also a high-end all mountain ski that an expert can enjoy too. It should work well for your size and ability level. Carves really well, good turn initiation from the tip rocker and early taper, and not so stiff or heavy that it's too demanding. It's also available in a 159 cm length, which would work well for your height. Not a lot of skis that hit the same performance are available that short. Take a look and let me know what you think! www.skiessentials.com/Chairlift-Chat/2019-Rossignol-Experience-88-Ti-Ski-Review/

    How would you compare it to another "two sheets of metal" ski, the Blizzard Bonafide?

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey John, In my opinion the Bonafide feels a little stiffer. It also has a shorter turn radius. Combine those two things and the Bonafide is a ski that you really have to stay on top of. Both require good technique and a relatively strong skier, but I think the Bonafide is even more demanding. Obviously there's a difference in width, too. Realistically the Brahma is a closer comparison to the Kendo than the Bonafide, and I would describe it comparatively in a similar way.

    hey jeff, whats the difference between a twin tip and flare tip. was looking at the kenjo. currently on an older twin tip (i think) dynastar with 78 waist. eastern skiing, not for the park. get into the moguls when I can, a little woods. been skiing a long time. 5'10"-180lbs

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    Do you mean a twin tip and a ski with tail rocker? Think of the normal tip of s ski. It's relatively abrupt rise off the snow. Rocker (sometimes referred to as flair), is different, and usually longer, more subtle rise off the snow. Sometimes that's combined with a twin tip, but it's not necessarily the same thing. Your old Dynastars are definitely twin tips, and likely don't have tail rocker. The Kendo is a good example of a ski that does have tail rocker, but does not have a twin tip. Are you an aggressive skier? The Kendo is an awesome all mountain ski, although it cam be a little bit demanding for less-aggressive or intermediate-level skiers. Let me know a little bit about your skiing style and I can definitely make some recommendations! SE

    thanks that's helpful. whats a good example of twin tip these days? but thin waist, not the wide park ski.

  • @SkiEssentials

    Traditional park skis, or competition-based park skis, are actually usually relatively narrow. In the 80-90 mm waist width range. The Nordica Soul Rider 87 is a good example, or the Volkl Revolt 86. Both of those are strong examples of a twin tip ski.
