Always on AWD is NOT a benefit and I stand by that. It’s worse for economy, it causes greater wear and it does nothing 95% of the time. Minus the fact that everyone has variable torque split and whatever, FWD based AWD is just as viable as whatever Subaru produces.

My favorite part of all Subaru's are the thin roof pillars and great visibility. Lots of glass and room to see out while still having 5 star roof strength and safety ratings. That in itself is a huge safety feature. I almost cut a guy off in my 08 Mountaineer because the massive rear pillars blocked him entirely from view. Best accident is one that never happens.

I owned an automatic '04 Forester, silver, some midlevel non-turbo trim. That thing didn't have traction/stability control either. Mine had shitty "high-mileage" all-seasons on it and if you romped the throttle in a snowy parking light with enough steering angle it would swap ends with ease. Lots of fun, until you aren't expecting it. First and only time I've ever spun out on a public road at speed was in the Forester during a Northeast blizzard. Fortunately got away with minor curb rash on one of the wheels and pants slightly browner. It was dinged up by the previous couple who owned it and always slightly broken when I got it around 95K. Timing belt was a bitch to change (interference engine baby), ABS light on half the time, wheel bearings chewed themselves, one of the brake calipers and the struts were shot, and the A/C compressor was on its way to shitting itself and wouldn't blow cold after about 5 minutes. The frameless windows, big side mirrors and superflous roof rack = RELENTLESS WIND NOISE. Thing was an absolute hero in winter though and never stranded me, not even once. Space for days too. Let it go after 128K on the odo after trading it in for the first in a series of Mazda 3's. Much better cars for my needs, but there are days I still miss the Subie and its quirks.

I'm from Canada where Subaru wasn't really a thing (at least in the late 80s, early 90s.). Driving through Vermont and New Hampshire back then I just assumed everyone there owned a Subaru, a green one, most virtually see through because of the rust. I'm pretty sure Greenpeace stickers came standard with every Subaru too.

Here's the thing about "symmetrical awd", it does mean *something*, and that thing is that the drive axles, and the paths the torque takes to get there is symmetrical. In a normal longitudinal awd system like in a pickup or a bmw, mercedes, lx platform chryslers (like I said, mercedes), etc, the front torque jogs out of a transfer case before going to an offset front diff. Now theoretically that means something, because every shaft is to some degree a spring, so with varying lengths that means different torque, blah blah blah. But... does that mean much? I doubt it. Here's what actually makes subarus special, the drivetrain is SIMPLE. Or... was. Take the 2nd gen forester with a 5 speed, power comes in, goes through a normal 5 speed manual, and then goes into a center diff. Yes, a proper center diff, it's got a 50/50 torque split and a viscous coupling. Often times they'll also have limited slip rear diffs too. This makes for a grunty winter beast of a car with no traction control to cut power and fuck you up. 3 wheel drive all the time! Hammer down, and the car just... goes. Now compare that to a contemporary honda crv, or similar of the time (we'll say 2005). They have 100% of the torque going to the front wheels with just a viscous coupling connecting the rear diff to a PTO off the trans. That means before the AWD begins to work there must be slip at the front to engage the viscous coupling, which is why those cars are much more efficient than the Subarus of the time. Ironically the Evo shown in the video is a rare exception, having a transverse layout with a proper center diff. So this means that yes, in that critical period of branding for subaru from the late 80s through the early 00s, their awd was remarkable in it's segment. You really couldn't get an awd system like that without buying an audi. Audi, notably shares the exact same drivetrain layout of subaru. Just usually with a V6 shoved into the fucking bumper cover. But lets fast forward to now. Now every new car sold must have traction and stability control. Okay, well why's that remarkable? Well it means now Subaru can't justify everything getting a viscous center diff and a LSD out back. You see, if every new car has a four channel abs module that can individually brake each wheel and torque vector digitally, why bother with the expense of an LSD or a viscous? All that can be controlled with a computer. By the way "x mode" is just torque vectoring. I super don't get why it's supposed to be special. This isn't to say computers are bad, but snow driving, the single greatest application of AWD is an INCREDIBLY dynamic use case, and realistically computers haven't beat it yet. You can't torque vector your way out a scenario that benefits from slip ratio and wheel speed. Snow driving is at odds with traction control, the computer must allow slip ratio, and that's incredibly difficult to apply to an all weather vehicle. On top of that, much of Subaru's mechanical center diffs are gone in favor of simple computer controlled clutchpacks much like the transverse layout cars, with most of these biasing towards front wheel drive. This is mostly in the autos and cvts, the manuals as far as I know all still have mechanical center diffs. So why buy a Subaru now? Well, first off if you get a manual they are still special. But other than that? I dunno, to just fund boxer engines existing? There's not much of a difference any more. Performance wise is a boxer engine pushing torque through a cvt, clutched to the rear wheels and torque vectoring really that different than a fucking chevy trax (or whatever gm's shitbox of the week is called)? On a mechanical level, I can't make a compelling case that it is.

The symmetrical AWD does help eliminate torque steer, at least comparing my father's Outback to my V6 RAV4. If you stab the throttle in the RAV4, it slightly pulls to the left (it's aligned correctly), and you can feel torque steer if the wheels slip in slick conditions. However, that's a fairly extreme case scenario for torque steer in a crossover, as the RAV4 V6 was rather powerful. That's the only noticeable difference between an automatic Subaru's symmetrical AWD and Toyota's asymmetrical AWD with the biggest engine in a small crossover.

But with no issues it becomes very bland and boring as there’s nothing to pick on the car for, and therefore (what I think) there’s nothing exceptionally good that you can point out either. Subarus gained their reputation for being good in the snow because the old Loyales and GLs used to come with lockers. Also due their relatively low center of gravity and high ground clearances. They have held on to that reputation by developing Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC). I know, I know, it's basically the brand's fancy version of stability control, but they were able to perfect it early on. By coupling it with their already fantastic AWD system, they eliminated the need for more expensive and hefty limited slip differentials by computer calculated application of the brakes on individual corners. I got the chance this past winter to drive a 2019 Impreza with this system up in the Colorado Rockies, and it is probably the most groundbreaking vehicle tech this side of the seatbelt. Imagine flying up a snow and ice covered canyon at 80 MPH while sipping coffee from travel mug.

I looked up from my tofu and granola and toe-shoes and 5 rescue dogs long enough to say this. Symmetrical AWD means the driven components are all the same length, which means torque will not favor one side of the vehicle or the other. Front/back, or left/right. This works because power will always seek out the path of least resistance to travel along. If you hook up a battery to a circuit with two potential links, one containing a bare wire and the other containing a resistor, power will tend toward the bare wire. If you hook up a motor to two wheels, one with a short quartershaft and another with a long quartershaft, without doing anything to mediate the speed, the wheel with the short quartershaft will tend to spin instead of the long one. What this means is that without delay or sensitivity issues caused by computer controlled traction systems/part-time AWD or viscous couplings, the vehicle is less likely to spin any one given wheel when on an unstable surface. Combined with the low weight and ground pressure compared to other vehicles in the same glass, this means that symmetrical AWD performs well above average in sand and snow without any delays in electronic response or sensor detection. The effect has been compared by some to diff-locking, but it's not quite the same, as diff-locking basically mechanically locks each half of a differential to distribute power 50-50 regardless of the tendency of power to seek out the path of least resistance.

Longitudinally mounted engine does not always mean symmetrical awd(see bmw xdrive systems for a counterexample.) Subaru awd is called "symmetrical" because it sends power to a center differential on manuals/torque converter autos or a hydraulic multiplate clutch on the cvt models which then splits the torque between the front and rear diffs as needed. And yes to answer your question, it is a huge advantage in snow.
