Thanks for this test TFL. I recently took my 2013 5.7L 1500 4x4 QuadCab on a trip from central Alberta thru the Rockies and SW of Banff (Fairmont area). With a total of about 800 lbs. in my box and 2nd row, we achieved a round trip mpg of 10.5L/100 km (~26 mpg). We drive between 55-70 mph depending which portion of highway (10% above speed limit on average). @tfl I drive a 2016 rebel with the air suspension. If I remember correctly, before you hook up a weight distribution hitch, you are supposed to set the air suspension to tire jack mode. That way the truck will squat naturally. After you properly hitch up with the weight distribution hitch, you turn tire jack mode off and allow it to compensate for any squat from the level point. Don’t know if you guys did this and edited it out or not. For future reference tho. Also, I believe the procedure is in the manual. I may have to confirm. Btw, keep up the great videos.

I wanted to add a re-life example. I have a 2017 RAM 1500 5.7L Bighorn w/Quad cab, tow package with 3.92 rear axle and anti-spin differential. Additional weight is running boards (80 LBS), snugtop cap (200 LBS) with an additional 150 lbs of truck bed cargo and an equal-i-zer 4-way WD hitch. (I weight 195) I towed a 30 FT travel trailer weighing 6400 LBS from Chattanooga TN to Las Vegas NV. approximately 1990 miles, the majority on I-40 Used mid grade gas and stayed for the most part at 60 MPH with not a lot of weather to worry about. (had 25 MPH side wind going into flagstaff) The truck took all grades and downhills on cruise control with no issues or slow down. From the trucks on-board system - 9.5 MPG I started the first 80 miles or so at 70 MPH with no issues but the gas was going even faster so I backed it down.

Air suspension, pano moonroof, 3.92 gears, 4x4 and practically every other option available making it basically the heaviest version of this truck. With « our » Ram as described (2013 BigHorn), we’ve often got 10-13 L/100km on a road trip and with just suitcases so that everyone knows. When it’s colder and stop and go traffic around our city of almost 1 million (Edmonton), the mpg certainly is 12-15 L/100km depending and even more if we punch the gas a lot, like 17 L/100. I think the tires play a role and switching to lighter 17 inch as well.

For my 2019 Ram 1500 Longhorn Crew Cab I fill up with 91 Shell V-Power (tested numerous other fuels before) and it makes really all the difference, quieter and smoother engine and transmission shifts, more power (really!) and most importantly better fuel economy (really!). Since with Shell fuel rewards you get bigger rewards, the 91 Shell V-Power cost almost the same as the 89 octane Shell, so the 91 actually saves a little bit of money (considering better fuel economy, approx. 8% or so vs. 87 and approx. 4% vs. 89) and it's also better for the engine and performance of the truck. (Just my personal experience and NOT a paid advertisement since I had the truck since late July 2018 over 3400 miles).

Thank you for an intelligent question about my gas mileage with my 2013 Ram 1500 Hemi, 8 Spd. I changed the original tires from 20” to 17”. When doing so, yes I had the speedometer recalibrated to reflect this. The main reason I feel I’ve gotten great mileage is as I read years ago from a GM Engineer; a smaller tire (17” vs. Larger like 20”) will have a considerably lighter spring weight and thus require less torque to turn the wheels. Translated, improved fuel mileage. Add in the cylinder deactivation, smooth 8 Spd., lower drag shape and other tweaks and there you have it. So a 17” Tire has its pros (lighter, less energy required, softer ride on bumps, nicer to steering components) but reduces GCWR (towing capability) as I understand.

Better transmission tuning will fix that which FCA is known for not doing well. The hemi trans tuning was junk and it could get the right gear for the load. Same thing here.

3.92s helps with that. I towed with my 2012 1500 for at least 60-70 mile trip (the longest is close to 190 miles) and its seems to sip fuel efficiency better while towing (tow/haul mode on) than it does empty. Just don't push it over 70mph with a significant 8 load so you can get better mpgs and save your driveline/powertrain although your truck is very capable of pulling it like a semi/freight train.

In my 2018 Ram 1500 4x4 SLT Bighorn 5.7 hemi, I pulled my 6000 lb travel trailer from Vegas to Idaho and back. Most of the trip I averaged 11.2 miles per gallon at 60 miles per hour. Until I encountered a horrible head wind the last 300 miles coming home, and I got 7.2 miles per gallon at 55 miles per hour average. So conditions and speed make a difference. It is by the way dangerous to pull a travel trailer faster than 65 MPH, and in fact most states prohibit that. Btw on that trip I only had 1800 miles on the truck to start.

That looks like a better Dodge product, but the notion of it lowering its rear air bags when trailer hauling is a negative. You set the air suspension to get the correct leveling, then it sank when in use. I guess we could always cheat-up the rear ride height so it will be correct when the software lowers it ---- duhhhh.

The 2019 is MUCH improved in drivability, shifting and low-end power, its almost like a new engine. I'm seeing about 1/2 - 1 mpg less than my 2014, but I don't have a tonneau cover yet, nor synthetic oil.

I didn't hear you mention what the final gear ration was of the previously tested 2016 ram vs this new 2019 ram. Are they both 3.21 or 3.92 gears? Same goes for the GMC that you compared it to. I would like to know if they gear ratio was similar to the ram to get a more realistic MPG comparison.

@TFL I don’t see how the truck lowering itself while towing a trailer would be a good thing. I would think it will negatively effect the trailer handling since the drop reciever is adjusted to the height the truck was previously with the trailer attached. Or did I misunderstand what you stated while towing 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • @DoyleHargraves

If my transmission is bouncing in & out of OD while towing, I will lock out OD in a heartbeat. When I truck shop, I always consider my torque curve. When I tow, I keep my engine within 300 or so rpms of my torque peak. So my 3.5L ecoboost likes to be around 2300 rpms, getting as much of my 420 ft lbs as I can. I have never burned up a transmission or engine. This is why low-end torque is key. If you try to do that with a 5.3L chevy, you'll have to be cranking out minimal 4500 rpms. Some trucks are grocery getters, and some are made for work. If your torque looks like a hockey stick, and only gives you 175 ft lbs at hwy speed, you are driving a minivan with a bed on it.

That test has a lot to do with how the wind is blowing with a big box trailer like that. You need a flatbed trailer with weights that are somewhat flat do do MPG. I mean, come on that trailer is a sail, slight wind behind it would change your MPG by 2 to 5 MPG. I do a lot of towing and even when I'm in my diesel I'm happy with even a slight tailwind. Huge difference.

Just was watching this video and found a bit of a discrepancy. When you use the manual gear selector to see what gear your in, that disables the MDS system. So when you say at 8:40 that you hope that it will run in cylinder deactivation mode, it will not. Just something you might want to know, so a true fuel mileage test could be conducted the next time your in the RAM...

It's most likely to break in the ring and pinions in the differentials. They go through a work hardening process under heavier loads. It generates extra heat which can break down the differential fluid and weaken the gears rather than strengthen them.

The eTorque wont really help much with MPG on the highway with a load, because you will be in tow haul and need the full V8 power to overcome the loads at 70. I'd probably repeat this test with a V6 eTorque.

91 Octane is best in my 2015 Ram 1500 4x4 Quad Cab 5.7 HEMI. Just can't find it hardly. I get 15.5 to 16 MPG with the 89. I got a solid 14 mpg w/93 (( OUCH !!! ) BUT A Huge differents w/ 91 octane I GOT 19.5 to 20 MPG. I drove down to Louisiana last year in 2017 to see some friends. Just thought it would be a good test for fuel. I have a 4" lift w/ 34 x 12.50 BFG all terrain tires w/ 18" Fuel Boost rims. Run my tires at 65 lbs pressure. I have the 3.92 gears 8 spd auto. I drove 70 to 75 MPH. I still have factory exhaust. Getting ready finally to put a set of ARH Long tube and full exhaust and see what that does.

I just priced my on Ram site. For a 2023 model year it's. $10,025 Dollars more for the same truck.
