I just bought one of these last week. I had an 06 vw gti that would suck the doors off a new honda civic, that I traded in. I had my first child last 18 months ago and needed something new that had great fuel mileage and great reliability, with a great warranty. I happen to work for Toyota, so I had it narrowed down to 3 companies. The kia offered some technology that Honda and Toyota didnt offer in this price point. I'm also getting way better fuel mileage, like upwards of 46 mpg for a 80 min trip.

Why complain about CVT's? You said it yourself, the tradeoff for good gas mileage is a lack of sportiness. These are commuter cars, they are aimed at being as fuel efficient as possible. If you want something sporty, then stay away from this class of car, it's that simple. I think Kia made one solid looking compact sedan here.

Since 2012 I have driven exclusively either a 6spd manual (GTI) or a CVT (2 subies - Impreza and Outback). I sold my '16 Outback in May of this year and cruised thru summer sharing the Impreza. I tried diligently not to get into another subie, but the Outback was such a great value and Subaru offered such a fantastic lease that I committed to another 3 yr tour in a subie. After trying out alternatives w/ more traditional transmissions, I discovered (surprisingly) that I prefer the CVT for daily driving. I don't expect Subaru will outfit their vehicles w/ a dual clutch any decade soon. For a more driving engagement I will opt for a manual every time. TFL team - I haven't driven the manual in either the new Impreza or the Crosstrek. What was your impression? I despise squishy gear boxes.

The new Subarus on the global platform have a revised CVT and it's a better than the previous gen CVT. The Outback is still on the previous gen CVT. Having a car equipped with a CVT for a year, it's not that bad at all. I can do 4hr drive without getting tired. It's real smooth.

Carl Deithloff / the new Corolla will be in a platform shared with the Camry, a step up from the Forte. Also, the new CVT on the Corolla will have a real first gear for performance and better long time reliability. Long term resale will be better than the Kia. The Current Corolla is garbage, and is really bottom of the class. However, resale and reliability is good. The new Corolla will be safer bet long term over the Kia.

No matter chain or belt drive CVT, they will wear out by the nature of the design. Constant high pressure metal on metal variable movement. Sadly car manufactures have figured out another way to give something an expiration date and turn it into servicing revenue. Luckily if you like Kia's warranty and simple MPI 2.0L motor which should be better than a GDI maintenance wise, you can still get the 2019 Elantra which offers all that and shares many parts but still uses the 6 speed automatic with surprisingly great fuel economy.

I have Audi A4 sport S Line wagon,2.0TDI. I was wondering if the Kia Forte 5. And will it also new and will there be engine option example 1.6 Turbo or 2.4. I drove Kia Forte 5 turbo and it was so fun and flashbacks of sport wagon.the forte 5 is almost basically Kia version of VW Golf and 1.6 isn’t GTI but much cheaper especially with Discounts 2018 Kia Forte 5 SX.

I bought a base model Forte in April 2019. It has everything you need, and nothing you don't need. The car kicks butt on the highway, uphill, and is very smooth around town. This tall guy is a critic, so he finds silly things to complain about. I can honestly say there is nothing to complain about, except one thing. The inside windshield tends to accumulate a film that Windex will not take off. You have to buy a high-speed window cleaner to clean it. This has happened to me 3 times. The Kia dealer told me the Forte has a special oil filter so I would have to bring it to the dealer for an oil change.NOT. Valvoline can do the oil change with no fancy oil filter needed. I would recommend using a full synthetic oil 5w20. Definitely a buy!

I am going to test drive Kia Forte next week. Forte and Elantra really grew in size. Glad they went with 2.0 liter engine over the previous 1.8 liter engine, which allowed them to grow the vehicles. They have become viable option to me. I test drove Elantra 2018. Quite impressed with the refinement. Nothing really stood up in terms of disliking. I owned 2001 Elantra, and 2003 Corolla. I am not even considering Toyota this time. And I am wary of the price tag on Honda Civic. Mazda 3 is too small for me. Not many choices.

Nice review. Nice car, but the '19 Jetta with its 8 speed AT gets the same mileage without a CVT and has a better warranty (6 yr.-72,000 mile bumper to bumper), more torque and a better head unit, IMO. You could improve the outdoor wind noise/sound with a 'dead cat' muffler on the microphone.

I drive a 2020 Forte LXS with the CVT and my experience has been this. The transmission while it is kinda rubbery as CVTs are, I think it’s okay. It does do a good job at “shifting” especially when you get on it. I think in this car, which I presume most people will buy to save on gas, the CVT makes sense. The engine is a little anemic, but the CVT does make good use of what power it does have. Mine is a low end model, but still has Apple CarPlay, lane keep, and forward collision avoidance, which a Dodge Charger rental I had didn’t even have. I think if you have a family, get something with a little more power, as 147 HP isn’t a lot (you buy the GT if you want more power.) But if it’s just you or you and your spouse, it’s perfectly fine. Overall, it’s a decent car and you can still have fun with its 147 HP. Maintenance will more than likely be pretty cheap.

I think the car looks great. I will definitely shop it. My preference would be the base model manual for price. but I don't think they would be easily found. If I can get a more powerful Toyota Corolla for a similar price I would probably do that. Also if I could get a great deal on a lager car with an 8 speed I would probably do that. One main feature for me is trying to avoid direct injection only cars . I will sacrifice power and fuel economy to avoid direct injection only.

In 2022 our 2019 Kia Rio began to bellow white smoke that reeked of gasoline. After a little research I found that it had a fuel pump mounted to the valve train. Took car to dealer, and dealer said that warrenty was exceeded by mileage, and part not part of drive train, and not covered by drivetrain warrenty. New pump was going to be $1200.00 installed, and part backorder was going to be five weeks minimum. I asked if spun bearings due to gasoline in crankcase, and burning car were covered under drive train warrenty, and they hung up on me. Called corporate and they advised part was covered under drivetrain warrenty because contract is in owners manual which has no fine print whatsoever. For the sake of expediency I bought brand new pump from another manufacturer, for $150.00 which arrived in three days, and then spent ten minutes replacing pump. It has run fine until recently when Rio was stolen, and severely damaged when run over a curb whicvh broke engine from transmission plus window broken, column trashed, and wipers broken off because thief accidentally started wipers when breaking column to steal. Kia denied ever hearing of theft problem. Kia wqanted two hours troubleshooting to give estimate for repair. I said I already know what is wrong with car so just fix it. Then Kia at insisted we prepay repair bill before work began. I asked how they could possibly know what was wrong with car ahead of time, and that must be a new thiung where dealer wont fix car unless you prepay. Told wife to leave car at Kia dealer. Kia said they would have it towed away for being parked illegally. I called corporate who has brand new stolen Kia runaround line dedicated to irritating customers who have had their Kias stolen already, and they hung up on me. I called the Bureau of automotive repair filed complaint then they had me call the federal trade comission where I also filed complaint. Since my wife is Thai I called a local Los Angelus Thai language newspaper to see if they would do a survey of their Thai community who owned Kia cars, and they agreed (my wife knows the owner of the paper). Accidentally recieved phone call from Kia corporate in which they accidentally gave me a direct line right back to the woman who hung up on me. I called, and informed her of my actiopns. She said the whole thing is a misunderstanding on their part if I already had the insurance check in my hand, and NOW the dealership WOULD look at theft damaged car but my wife had to go in and sign a permission slip. Keep in mind Kia is required by a class action lawsuit to repair these cars, and pay all related expenses. My insurance company shouild not have to pay anything to anyone as Kia has been found responsible for fasiling to protect these cars from theft properly. My wife is making monthly payments on this car, and it has been damaged, and undriveable for three months as I write this causing us to buy another car. Considered renting one and backcharging Kia, but I am not an ass looking to make the reimbursement as expensive as possible for Kia, I just want them to fix it. They are dragging their feet at the customers expense, and are downright rude about it once you get them to stop lying. I have purchased two new Kia products lifetime, and will NEVER EVER buy another

I think if you don't really need every single available bell and whistle (and perhaps consider a smaller size tire/alloy wheel combination), you could probably purchase a still decently equipped version of this vehicle at a much less expensive price point, especially when rebates and other incentives get factored in.

Most of the reviews I've seen claim that the new Forte has better steering feel and handles a little better than the current Elantra. Plus the interior of the Forte looks a lot more impressive IMO. So, unless there were a huge price difference between the two, I'd be much more likely to head toward a Kia dealership.

Great review. And yes, thanks to Peter & company, Kia cars are very good-looking inside and out. But I disagree with Tommy; they had a decent transmission in the previous generation. Swapping it out for a CVT (like Chevy did for the Malibu) was definitely a step in the wrong direction! And it proves that just because everyone else is doing it, doesn't necessarily mean that you should! 🐇

They have already released the Forte GT here in Korea. It looks wicked! It also addressed most of the concerns people seem to have with the regular car. It's got the 1.6 T and the DCT along with an independent rear suspension. www.kia.com/kr/vehicles/k3-gt/features.html You can see it here.

Have a week to decide. That's about the best test drive there is. Only thing is it keeps your money tied up for a couple weeks.

Also that little 1.5L GDI Honda motor with a turbo versus the 25% larger 2.0L MPI naturally aspirated in the Kia/Hyundai. I like a larger motor doing less work with less parts to break. Plus MPI will keep the intake valves much cleaner unlike a GDI which is constantly dirtying the valves and requires servicing to clean since the fuel delivery system does not come in contact with them.

Not butterfly wings; dragonfly wings. You have to speak korean to it, lol. The law of cars: The higher the fuel economy the lower the fun. That's quite a price jump from 18k to 26k for the LXS. 18k must be just to get people to the dealer, then they work their magic on them.

People are so confused with the purposes of cars. If you want a sport car, then go buy the sport car. If you want a luxury car, then go buy the luxury car. If you want a family car, then go buy the family car. Don't expect this line of cars to be performed as a luxury and sport cars. The design, the stuffs they put inside of 2019 Kia Forte including in base model and the price are hard to ignore and way far better than civic and Corolla. As for iVT, it is a new thing that Kia put together in a better way but so far it is effectively working. Time will tell how it will hold up. Civic and Corolla are like grandma of Kia and Hyundai. I don't see them growing rapidly like Kia and Hyundai. In this segment(2019), Civic and Corolla might have a hard time to outsell Kia Forte for sure.

@grandpa5x Pulliam Lol my car also requires that at every 30k or so and pretty much any older vehicle just a bit longer but since I do the change myself it only costs at most $50. But since it is special fluid it could very well be that including the price of the filter and possible gasket. Many people who do take care of their cars do it at around that many miles anyways. So at least for me a CVT wouldn't be much of a change except for the driving style.

KIA CVT ARE JUNK!!!! Have a 2019 kia forte and at 10,000 miles my cvt transmission is going out!!! Called dealership to ask if they have had problems with the transmission and the guy says oh yeah just got done replacing one on a car that only had 2100 miles. So he tells me to bring it on in and start the process of sending in all the information to kia for approval of a new transmission.
