2019 Hyundai i30N Performance Review - Hail To The New King

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hyundai's i30 is the world's best small hatch. The i30N, then, has a lot to live up to. It has to be better than every other hot hatch on the road.
In other words, can it out Golf GTI the Golf GTI?
Peter took the banging, spitting i30N on a gruelling run into the hills to find out just how good it is.

    @@TheRedlinedotcom It look more raw (in a good way). Perhaps all the generations of the Golf has lead to over engineering them and made them just a bit too comfortable and soft. It seems they have had 169kw forever and that's just no where near enough punch anymore. Also the Golf always looks the same, year after year. Come VW, it's not a Porsche, you have to change it up.

    I own one now since last friday ( 14.9 ) and I have to be honest.... I love this toy! It is real fun to drive (but then you need a lot of fuel, about 11L/100km) or pretty comfortable in Normal or Eco mode. The turning radius is a little odd but yea, that is one of the points to be picky about. The seats are very comfy even they are bucket seats. The only point there which I think isn't that great: the head rest is pretty far in the back so i think it isn't perfect to lay the head back. But so far, I would buy it once again! I'm from Switzerland and not Australia ^^"

    Not so sure I agree. I love the I30N, think it's amazing and astonishing value. But I think the Type R is the King. The Hyundai trumps it in sound for sure but the Type R is simply amazing to drive. My close friend has a Hyundai N and he came across a Golf R on a spirited drive and said it was close, but he also came across an FK8 on another spirited drive and he said he was blown away by just how quick the Type R was in the straight and corners. I just purchased a brand new FK8 and was seriously considering the I30N but I think the Type R is the King overall in terms of driving and out right capability.

    Hey there Gary - the great thing is we don't have to agree! Life would be very dull if we all thought the same way. :-) it's a close-run thing with the Type R, that's certainly true. Both the N and the R are terrific things but the N has a crucial advantage - for me anyway - in that it's a whole Kia Picanto cheaper. If money wasn't a thing, then the doors open. I'd have a Type R in a heartbeat because it is a brilliant car. But I'd have an i30 N too :-) I wouldn't have a Golf R because I think it's just a bit numb and while it's colossally fast, it's like the old AMG A45 - on rails, a bit of a passenger rather than a driving experience. I'd have a Golf GTI over it :-D Make sure you go and watch the Type R review (kzread.info/dash/bejne/e2aHu7p8gtyYmJs.html) I did, I'd love to hear what you think. @@TheRedlinedotcom that's very true it would be full of we all agreed!! To be honest I agree with the value for money point. The Hyundai is fantastic value I very nearly bought it instead of the Type R. The thing that made me pay a little more is the resale value. Looking at Type R's I see some 2017 cars with 40 k miles on the clock still fetching good returns. Like I said I love both it's just having friends with both driven side by side the Type R really shows it's dominance. I think the Hyundai is fantastic though. @@TheRedlinedotcom Ha fair play! Interesting, thanks. To be clear, I absolutely love the i30 N - so much so that I own one in fact!! Makes me smile every time I drive it, and the subjective stuff was easily enough to sway me towards the N: I think the Type R's sound is very dull, making it less of an event, and the better acceleration isn't so different as to offset its looks. As regards the objective stuff - looking at it as a FWD performance car - the Type R is of course second to none. I guess that objective bit though isn't the totality of what hot hatches are about though! All the best, happy new year, and I have indeed subscribed!

    Hi SRS 75. That's a good question. I can't tell you about the new Megane RS but I can talk about the old one. You'd have the i30 for the daily - it's such a competent all-rounder. The RS is more hardcore and less road-friendly (although plenty happily drive them day to day) and isn't as polished on the inside. The new RS has all-wheel steer and is probably much better than the old car than a daily. The people I've spoken to say the new RS is a bit of a step back in the engine department but it's got a great chassis.

  • @TheRedlinedotcom

    @TheRedlinedotcom

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey JW, thanks for watching! I think - generally - hot hatch refers to cars grouped around a certain price point and following certain conventions. The obvious contender around which to group the classic meaning of "hot hatch" is the VW Golf GTI. In Australia, that car is around $42,000 and either side of it are cars like the Focus ST, i30 N, Peugeot 308 GTI (RIP) and the RenaultSport Megane. The M140i (superb car, review here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/jKh51sSze7HHpag.html ) and A45 (the new one is brilliant), they're kind of past that. Here in Australia, we've had the M140i (RIP) at around $65k and the A45 way above it around $90k. Both amazing cars, both very hot hatches, but like Golf R and even Civic Type R, they're a fair way from the Golf GTI in price and performance. You can also go down a segment, to the Fiesta/Clio/208 grouping - they're hot hatches whereas you'd have to say the far more expensive Yaris GR is not a hot hatch in the generally accepted understanding, just because it's so expensive and reminds me of the wild Audi S1. Having said all that, the i30 N is in a between the Golf and the Type R, but muddies the waters a bit by being cheaper than the Golf. Still with me? :-) Does that make sense?

I'll tell you why you see so much of us and less of the car than you might want - filming the car itself takes up *a lot* of time. As The Redline in particular is not swimming in cash, time is money and we shoot on weekends and try and keep it down to about four or five hours per shoot. If we had a week to do it, you'd see a *heck* of a lot more car, less of me, more sound more everything. But - on the flipside - a lot of people like to see who's talking and what faces they're pulling etc. As a lot of my jokes rely on your seeing my face, you're kind of stuck with it :-D But it's mostly time. kzread.info/dash/bejne/oK2W0rqGY67Md6g.html The Golfs are not boring, its just too easy and safe to drive for everyone. One can do the "same" laptimes and get not tired doing so as i.e. in other more sporty cars, where u get very tired and at the end of the day it hurts your back and ass. I mean I got a lot more tyred in the i30N as in a Golf, while driving the same road for 1 hour fast. The i30N is nice, but its not a GTI killer, those are two different types of car for different people. They deliver the same speed, but they deliver it differently. The one is loud the othe is rather quiet, sophisticated or rough, easy to drive or a lot of work, familiar warm interior or harsh cold interior. Its like comparing a rough chocolate with a smooth chocolate and saying the rough one is better. PS: There sems to be a problem with the Navigation in the middle console display and the other display. Sometimes they are not showing the same things in europe/especially Italy.

    Hi Jesse. I'm a bit mystified as to why you think I'd comment on a car I've not driven given my job is as a car journalist (you can read my hundreds of reviews in a variety of places). I don't recall saying the Hyundai i30 N was better than the Golf R - I've just watched the whole video and all I said was that the Golf R is boring - compared to its competition, I think it is. I think the AMG A45 is boring as well as the Nissan GTR (the Nismo is a different story). The N isn't the Golf R's competition which is why I didn't compare them directly. On that point, I don't think a better interior makes the Golf R a better or worse car than anything else, that's a question of value for money and what you're willing to cop as a customer. Both the Golf GTI and Golf R are more expensive than the Hyundai, so they should have a better interior. Having said that, The Redline isn't about going around a car and poking and prodding every bit of trim and plastic. We're interested in how the car makes you feel when you're driving it - the i30 N is more fun to drive than the Golf GTI, it sounds better, it has better overall chassis engineering and it's faster. I said that in the video. It also has a better warranty, better standard equipment and you can track it without cooking your warranty. Those are all good reasons that the Golf GTI is inferior as far as The Redline is concerned. Thanks so much for watching and joining the discussion. Sorry it took so long to respond, KZread neglected to tell me you'd left a comment.

    Why does every i30N review look like its totally payed and as a commercial? Even the amateur reviewers often talk how cheap they got their car, but in reality u can not get it that cheap at all? I was looking at a german reviewer and he said he got the car for under 30k with almost everything, well I have talked to two dealers and the price was 35k exactly the same as the GTI Performance with the VW bonus u get at a official vw dealer. I am just wondering and not dissing this car, its amazing. Also they often talk about PRICE and performance, but there is absolutelly no comparison with a Polo GTI (much cheaper and only a little slowe) or Audi S1, which costs the same, is smaler but has quattro and is faster. I am selling my GTI and will wait 1-2 year, what will happen to this line after some years and over 100k kilometers. There were a lot of amazing cars in the past and only later they showed their problems. Cuz I am doing over 30k in a year and this means the i30N would have 90.000 in just 3 years. Wait and see if it will still be interesting in 2020.

The cars I drive are all from the manufacturer's press fleet and I definitely am not paid to review them - in fact I pay from my own pocket to produce these videos. They're completely independent. The i30 is way more fun than a Polo GTI and the S1 costs a lot more and is much smaller. Yes, they both have quattro, but not everyone wants that. And neither of them are as lively as the i30. The S1 is particularly good fun, but I'd still have an i30 over it. Let us know what you end up buying. The Redline Yeah the i30N sure is a lot more fun, but thats only because its loud, agressive and play to the heart of people who like that. But still I would never say its better, but different. For example when I was driving the Polo GTI on a small track and then I tried the i30N it felt very heavy in the corners. I could not throw the i30N in the corners so lively as the 300kg less Polo. Still what I wonder is there is like a Million i30N videos out there, but absolutelly nobody did a track comparison between a i30N (not performance, the normal one), the 1.8 Polo GTI and the god ol S1. Actually the S1 costs exactly the same as the i30N in germany. So then the quiestion is, why the argument that the i30N is bigger if they always drive them alone and in the same argument they talk about fun, we know that a lighter, smaler car on a small track is more fun to throw into corners, than a heavier big one.

    Ah, these are all questions for the individual owner. I don't accept that you can't say, "This car is better" - the i30 N just is a better car than the Golf GTI. The i30N is better because it's more fun to drive than the Golf GTI. The other cars don't really come into the reckoning - as a journalist, I don't compare C-segment with B-segment cars because most buyers (around 60-70%) are looking in that segment because it best fits their needs. Didn't know the i30N cost the the same as an S1 - that car is waaaaay more expensive in Australia.

    The Redline What you are saying is for a car to be better it just has to be loud and more fun? Its very simple to make a car loud i.e, turn the sport select mode on to make it sharp in a golf and its also hard and turn the ESC Off and its also fun, but what happen when you don´t want fun, when you have a long 600-800km long trip ahead? When you want comfort, quality buttons, navigation, Intuitive and consistent design, clarity, responsivity of the user interface/interior, aesthetically pleasing typography, making the user feel more at home when using your interface, like the new GTI Performance? Is this so called fun the only thing that this car has? Sure the first 10.000km are fun with those tyres, but what about the rest of the 100.000km? Last but not least, what can you say about the i30N if you leave out the fun part?

  • @TheRedlinedotcom

    @TheRedlinedotcom

    5 жыл бұрын

    I'm not sure I said it had to be loud. The point of the GTI is to be fun to drive. That's its stated purpose. I think you're missing the point of The Redline - I'm here to talk about the experience of driving a car. All the things you talk about are what you are looking for personally. You want a Golf? Buy one. You don't have to take any notice of what I say. I think the i30 N is an excellent every day hot hatch and is better than the Golf. There is nothing wrong with the i30 interior, it works just as well and is well-designed at a global level. All the things that make the Golf good make the i30 good. The i30 has a better chassis and does a better job at being fun to drive - which is what you're paying extra for - than the Golf. You don't have to agree with me, but you seem set against the i30. Which is fine. But I'm not going to argue with a fanboy. So again, thanks for watching, but I'm over it.

    Hi Joerick, thanks so much for watching and getting stuck in. I have been to a large number of Asian countries, thanks so much for asking. The point of me saying Australia roads are bad is in the context of the colossal amount of money that is spent in this country and the amount of bragging our politicians do about it does not in any way match the quality they claim we have. On top of that, the i30 N was designed and tested in Germany, which has excellent roads. The global head of N came out to Australia, drove the "world" tune and said, "Way too hard for these terrible roads." I don't think the i30 N - and let's be honest here - is intended for Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesian or Malaysian roads. Or even good chunks of China, and these are all countries I have used roads in.

    $49,000 for a demo manual is a lot of money, when the dual clutch comes out next year it will be well over $50,000. Give me the golf gti any day, heaps cheaper and easy to tune to the power of the Hyundai.

    Hey Kevin - I think you're thinking of the top-spec i30 - the lower-spec starts at $39990 (or thereabouts). The i30 also has more stuff in it (not that we go into that much on The Redline), a longer warranty, a track warranty, that sort of thing. The Golf GTI is exactly the same price but for a three door with nothing in it. There are good reasons to choose the Golf over the Hyundai, but value for money isn't it. And a car that has to be tuned to match the competition...well, that's not cricket is it? Thanks for joining the conversation, it's always fun! Make sure you subscribe for more!

    Yep, the Tiburon replaced the Coupe. I had a Hyundai Coupe in from 1997 to 2000. Great looking thing, not bad chassis. Tiburon was definitely sold here. Hyundai hit it pretty big in the mid-90s with the Excel, and then with the (e)Lantra so they were fairly well-established by the time Tiburon arrived.

    The Redline Yes! Elantra was established and coupe, but having Tiburon in AU was a big gamble so that’s why I asked at first place. Tiburon probably has success in America.

    Yeah, it did really well there but here it was largely ignored. Front wheel drive V6, dodgy suspension setup (no Porsche this time), it was a bridge too far for too much money. Looked good in its first version then got weird after the facelift.

    Top Gear quote. "Every time we put the Civic Type R against rivals - new RS Megane and upstart Hyundai i30N included - it always monstered them. The Type R transcends what a front-drive hatch should be capable of. Anyone who dismisses it on looks alone is missing out on simply the best hot hatchback on Earth right now. Still."

What I am asking you to do is stop obsessing over an opinion that differs from yours, consider that not everybody is the same as you (thank the good Lord) and perhaps, as a result, your blood pressure will lower and fewer people will avoid you in the street. I don't have to agree with you, Top Gear or anyone else you quote at me. I can find as many people who agree with me as people you can find agree with me. Hi there Doug - you might think the Civic Type R is the best hatchback in the world today. And that's perfectly fine. Do I ask you how much Honda paid you to write this? No, I didn't. And why is that? Because I don't think they would. If you bothered to watch my Honda Civic Type R review you'd see that I was very enthusiastic about it. Did they pay for that review? They did not. Did Honda pay for the review I did on other websites where I said it was awesome? No, they did not. So why don't you think before you warm up your keyboard fingers and say possibly the dumbest thing you can say to any motoring journalist who does not accept payments for reviews and who, in fact, pays for this channel out of his own pocket so halfwits like you with no imagination or the experience I have can accuse me of something that has not and never will happen. It's lovely to have you along and I'm super-pleased you took the time to write a comment, even though it is colossally stupid. Do subscribe for more, though, I have plenty more where this came from.

    @The Redline Pete, I'm not here to argue with you. If you do a little research you will find that the majority of Automotive journalists also agree that the type R is the best hatchback, even your mates in Australia. This review is legit and unbiased unlike yours. kzread.info/dash/bejne/d4p_t8ObqZuXYs4.html Secondly, the Type R has set records not only on the famous Nurburgring race track, but on many other race tracks. i30N, none that I'm aware of. The Type R is not only the best on track, but also on the street. In fact the Type R went up against many much higher priced cars in an Australian shootout and it won. The Type R is also in contention for Motor Trends best drivers car, also being the least expensive among many high powered exotics. Need I say more. Here is another video subsidized by the Hyundai corporation. kzread.info/dash/bejne/iJqc2ZJwe7LQn9o.html Make sure you cash that check from Hyundai Pete.

My problem with you is your accusation of bias, your total lack of interest in the subject matter and your idiotic assertions are based on nothing more than feels. Lol OMG, this guy is so lame and subjective. Constantly comparing it with the GTI and calling it dead. Kinda shows what a try hard this car is - it so wants to beat the GTI. Hyundai didn’t build it. The ex VW/Audi/BMW execs did it. How ironic. At the end of the day people buy the GTI for being a GTI or even an R, a jack of all trades. Not because it tried so damn hard to beat another. Oh it looks boring....ermmmm......that is why people buy it because it looks subtle with refined features and interior.....hellooooo!!!!. Honestly there are way too many of these video review sites popping up with pretty useless reviewers.
