2019 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali or the New Silverado? | First Drive | Edmunds

Edmunds journeys to St. John's, Newfoundland, and the far eastern edge of the North American continent to get a first taste of the all-new 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali pickup truck. Watch as Director of Vehicle Testing Dan Edmunds climbs behind the wheel of this fully redesigned full-size truck and gets familiar with its revised 6.2-liter V8 powertrain and its enlarged crew cab. You'll also see what he thinks about GMC's new MultiPro six-way tailgate.
Q: What is different about the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500?
A: The 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 has been fully redesigned, especially the crew-cab models, which rest on a longer frame that allows for about 3 extra inches of rear legroom. GMC has also added Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) and a 10-speed transmission to the optional 6.2-liter V8 powertrain. A new six-way MultiPro tailgate has been introduced as well.
Q: What engines will power the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500?
A: The base Sierra 1500 comes with last year's 4.3-liter V6 and a six-speed automatic, and last year's 5.3-liter V8 is optional. The SLE and Elevation will start with a new 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and an eight-speed transmission, and here a DFM-equipped 5.3-liter V8 is available as an option. Finally, the SLT, the AT4 off-road model and the Denali come standard with the DFM 5.3-liter V8 and the eight-speed transmission, and each of them can be optioned with the 6.2-liter V8 and a 10-speed transmission available if you start with a 4x4 version. That's right. The 6.2-liter V8 option is no longer available on two-wheel-drive models.
Q: How does the MultiPro tailgate work?
A: GMC's new MutliPro tailgate is essentially a two-piece tailgate-within-a-tailgate design that also features a broad flip-up panel. The flip-up panel acts as a load stop when one or the other tailgate element is opened. It transforms the mechanism into a stairway by becoming a wide step when both tailgate elements are deployed at the same time. The best part is this tailgate is standard on the SLT, the Denali and the new AT4 off-road package.
Q: How much trailer weight can a 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 tow?
A: The maximum tow rating of the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 ranges between 12,000 and 12,200 pounds depending on which cab and bed you choose. To get there, you must buy the 6.2-liter V8 and opt for the Max Trailering package, which includes 3.42 axle gearing, stiffer rear suspension (which will harm ride comfort when you're not towing), extra cooling and a bigger alternator. The 6.2-liter V8 tow rating drops to 9,100-9,300 pounds if you don't get the Max Trailering package and instead stick with the standard 3.23 axle gearing. Maximum 5.3-liter V8 ratings range between 11,100 and 11,400 pounds with the Max Trailering package and 9,400 to 9,700 pounds without it. That's no typo: The 5.3-liter V8 can tow more than the 6.2-liter V8 with standard 3.23 gearing because the suspension becomes the limiting factor and the 6.2-liter V8 truck simply weighs more.

Looks like a pretty nice truck! Love the tailgate and running boards and simple efficiency of the interior (if a bit too simple)! At that price I’d like to see a 35 gal fuel tank and towing mirrors!

Just a word of caution - the new 2019 Silverado-Sierra twins can NOT even be ordered or does NOT come with the “power brake and foot pedal” adjuster.... Think about such a large truck without this option....If you have short legs, you have to move up the seat close to the steering wheel, which has an airbag in it. This is normally a pretty standard option for most trucks (GM, Ram, Ford)...I own a 2017 Silverado, but some “bean counter” within GM axed this very useful feature......why?

So with the new cylinder deactivation system where the engine shuts down to 2 cylinders and the new 350 pounds of weight reduction, this truck still gets the same miles per gallon as the previous model. The information center between the RPM and the speedometer looks like it was made from Mattel in 1985. The 2015-2018 looks so much better. I will say that the tailgate is AWESOME!

Good morning, We got the 6,2l a month ago (2018) SLT, 3,42, with towing mirrors (where are the new ones??) and went on vacation - 4000km, towing a 6500lbs TT, and got the same mpg than what we had with the ecodiesel - but much nicer towing experience...relaxing even... That 6,2l is worth any money you pay for, but it has to run on premium! That's the only drawback!

The problem is GM only offers the 6.2L in their higher-end trucks. If someone wants say a short bed regular cab 2WD truck with a 6.2L/10 speed they're SOL unless they built it themselves. You shold at least be able to option this engine/transmission in a midlevel quad or crew cab Z71. Also the 10 speed should of made it to the 5.3L. Ford is using it on most of the engine options even on the low optioned trucks even though I think some of the lowerend trucks will still get their old 6 speed auto.

Good morning, it is written in the owners manuel. As well, it is also noted on the gas door. We run premium as we also ran premium diesel when we had one. A simple security. Regular will probably be just fine, but we want to make certain this engine will last at least 200,000KM, or about 160,000miles.

Same exact mpg (or in our case km/l) impressive given the absolute power available (HP & Torque) but most impressive is the fact that we were able to run on V4 on the highway...wow. The accountant in me is really impressed...and apparently, the oil changes are cheap - anyway, certainly cheaper then the ecodiesel - that is still to confirme.

I want the Denali front fascia on the 2019 Ram. This center stack and center console was new in 99. Not suitable for today's buyers. Many will buy this for it's aggressive exterior styling and new tailgate. I'm a Ram owner who's been waiting since 08 for a new Ram. 2019 looks like a minivan head-on. I'll continue to wait another two to three years for the next front fascia update to the Ram. There is no rush for me to get a new truck. My 04 RAM still looks great and has never been in the shop for anything other than the airbag recall and scheduled maintenance. The 2019 RAM has ABS insert below the headlights. This allows them to offer three different headlights, as well as update the front fascia easily without retooling for new quarter panels. This aspect gives me hope they'll return to the more aggressive front fascia that won me, and countless others over in 02. Of course I had just purchased my new F150 when the first spy pics of the all new 02 RAM were released. Talk about buyer's remorse!!! Geez. I damn near cried about it. But, like many I patiently waited until my truck was paid off. Within a week of the last payment on the F150 I was in my new 04 Ram Laramie. A feeling I want to enjoy again in a new faclifted 2020 Ram 1500 CrewCab Laramie. Let's make it happen RAM!!!

Pro tailgate puts the others to shame, rear bumper steps, extra wide bed, AC outlet in the bed and cabin, 12, (yes 12) welded in place bed tie-downs plus 6 optional tie-down spots, storage behind the rear seats (tire pump), storage under the rear seats, full size spare..plus the GMC cheaper than the others even in the Denali trim (heads up display, surround camera vibrating seat alerts (instead of a chime))...best value by far. UPDATE: I bought a loaded SLT with the STANDARD size bed. With the gate down and the "step" flipped up 4' x 8' drywall and plywood will fit FLAT on the bed with 2 inches of clearance between the wheel wells and about 5 inches of clearance between the back of the bed and the flipped up step. With the AC outlet in the bed we can cut our pieces right at the truck if we need to. Just an awesome truck.

A perfect example of GM getting comfortable with their current status. I remember when GM did this back in 2000 and had to lay off workers and couldn't sell their vehicles even for a loss. (Remember the buy out) No way does this truck come close to the ram. As a matter of fact the real only innovation is the tailgate and 10 speed that comes with one hell of a up charge (for the 6.2 and 10 speed).

I am looking at the comments below, and a majority say "REEEEE INTERIOR SUCKS ASS" and honestly, I can see that it could use updating, but its not that bad. I actually like it over the new Ram because it is practical, something the Ram/Fiat severely lacks. I have already made up my mind, if they keep the same interior, I will be buying a new Silverado.

To say it's an "evolution" of the last generation Sierra is generous. It's the same interior for anything that matters...and no...the leather in the Sierra does not feel more premium than a Silverado. Went to test drive, told them to call me when it gets down under $45k 🙄

90% of the comments here are just Ram fanboys saying the Ram is better. You sure seem to know a lot about these trucks for someone who drives a rusted 1985 Honda thats being held together with duct tape and bungee cords. Everybody complains about how it isn't different enough from the last generation. If it ain't broke don't fix it. It works, the customers like it so why change it?

Incredible how GM can’t move forward from their 90s interior design. Vertical infotainment and rounded corner buttons and trims scream “90s still here!” Should hire someone from Germany, Sweden, Englan, or Korea to revamp the interior of their entire fleets.

They FINALLY went to push button start and unlock button on the exterior door handle.... All of the competitors have had this functionality for YEARS. Same with the ANTIQUE column shift. They say their customers want it, I'm thinking it is a corporate bean counter keeping it because of cost.....

I know I did not want a push button start or console shifter when buying my new truck in 2016. More space with a column shifter, and don’t have to worry about a push button start failing. Less stuff to break. If I wanted luxury, I’d get a Tahoe or Cadillac XTS. All this luxury doesn’t belong in pickup trucks. That’s why I got the Silverado LT, and optioned it with the max towing package. Ya know, because I used my truck as a truck. Do wish I had a 6.2L but the 5.3L gets the job done just fine.

who ever said you need to run premium fuel in GM'S 6.2 liter engine is false! Premium fuel is recommended but NOT required. How do I know? Because I own one and run regular all the time in my 6.2 liter engine with zero problems. For all you people that hate or put down GM'S New Silverado and GMC Sierra I have one thing to say, GO POUND SAND! GM'S trucks are superior quality and superior engineered compared to the fiat ram and the butt ugly fords. By the way, My 6.2 liter is the best V8 engine you can buy in a pickup truck! I also love the New look of the 2019 Silverado and it looks much better than any ford or ram truck.

Premium is recommended, not required. Just as premium is recommended for the 3.5 Ecoboost for max power, and 89 for the 5.7 Hemi.

  • @CajunRulez

My butt ugly Ford will produce more torque out of its little 3.5 Ecoboost at a lower RPM than your big 6.2. It will out tow, out run, and just outperform your precious Denali in every way. It has better technology, handles better, turns better, and it will continue to outsell all others for a long time. Ford's leading the pack. GM still hasn't figured out a better formula for power other than to make a big ass V8 like they did in the 60's.

  • @gordiehattrick

    @gordiehattrick

    5 жыл бұрын

I doubt that little 3.5 will have the long term reliability having to keep your foot in it to get that Torque pulling a heavy trailer. By the way, it's only 10 Lbs feet more than a 6.2L Chevy. The Chevy also has 45 more HP. As far as reliability, the Ecoboost has tons of issues including: Condensation in the Intercooler Timing Chain Wear Ignition Issues Blue Or White Smoke From Exhaust Face it, you have to beat on that little 6 popper to get it to perform near a pushrod V8.
