In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 6,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 20 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com

John Bracewell you can’t fully compare their peaks, as they’re from different eras. Generally speaking people have gotten better over time, Joseph is much younger than Jonas was at his peak. Truthfully the better metric would be how dominant they were at their peak.

@@ryanmueller1617 Hypertapping alone gives Joseph a much higher ceiling. He might not even be at his peak yet. it looked like jonas lost on purpose to me. i saw a few other people say it looked like he threw the match because he wants to retire and commentate. he was just making too many unusual placements. i've seen him play enough to pretty much predict what he'll do a lot of the time but he was completely unpredictable in this match with all the strange decisions he kept making.

@@krusomore Jonas loves the game and this competition way to much, to disgrace it with something like throwing a match on purpose. Pressure just got to him. Paul has a very aggresive playstyle, which he showcased in Game 1 and that got into Jonas head a little, he thought he had to play more agressive than usual and that puts him out of his comfort zone. Also it was the first match he played this weekend, i doubt sonething like that would have happened in later rounds. To sum everything up: He lost the match fair and square. To even suggest that he would throw a match is an insult to his personality and his passion for the game.

Vandweller and Heather do such a great job commentating. Even though Jonas just lost over on the main stage, both concentrate on the match at hand and do not talk about Jonas vs MGM. Must have been especially tough for Heather. I get that on the main stage you also have to announce different informations, and I really did appreciate the updates to the tournament during the live event, but it's really distracting while rewatching the matches that the commentators on the main stage would often not pay attention to "their" matches and instead watch the side stage events.

IMO down-pressing puts you at a strategic disadvantage if you top out first, which, as we have seen many examples of, is very likely in a tournament setting. Your opponent can then "just" pace their effort and manage the risk in order to make up the remaining points. Harry should learn from that.

We haven't seen Harry in competition since CTWC, he doesn't compete online so we don't know how sharp his tournament skills are. He's still a good player but there isn't a big skill gap between him and Matt Martin. Maybe 2 in 3 chance, so it's not that big a surprise. Jonas going out was a shocker, he did not perform well at all. Two early topouts will lose to anyone in any year.

@@ThinkAboutVic but mini droughts (for example one board may need a T or one board may need a J) affect different boards differently. Generally bursts and longbar droughts are the ones that can be annoying for both boards but you're right they do have to suffer the same things, it's just that in different positions you may want different pieces

@@KevAlberta I know he talked about being seriously hung over on that day (and he does indeed look a little pale to me) because he, Jonas, and a few other players where out partying the night before. He said next year he will start the drinking AFTER the tournament, lol.

Harry was charging the delayed auto shift (DAS) for the next piece too early, causing the square piece to shift to the left. This is an early DAS load. That misdrop of the square piece threw him off.
