Scott, your channel and reviews are always honest and in depth. Your comment about the 1250 fitting the RT better than the GS is accurate in my opinion also. When motoring along on the Rt I think the gear ratio difference between the RT and the GS is one of the main reason it feels differently. The RT is a perfect commuter (In my opinion) Keep producing the great content.

I love the name, "Nothing To Prove". It rings a very loud bell with me. Owning and riding one of the first R90S's around London in 1975, I could afford to ignore all the racing challenges. The big expensive cars showed respect and chaffeur-driven Rolls gave me plenty of space, the occupant of one even giving me a royal wave. The police on their Triumphs and Nortons stopping me frequently to have a look at the bike they soon would be riding, and even once stopping me in the middle of Trafalgar Square after riding 80 mph up Whitehall and giving me a pass with a "mind how you go, sir". I was otherwise just a nobody, but on my BMW R90S I had nothing to prove.

Another excellent informative bike review, really enjoy your reviews Scott! I would go so far as to say your the number 1 bike reviewer on KZread!

I test rode one back in March and have to say I was really impressed!Handling was great and I loved the ride modes and electric windscreen-great review!

Man, what a great review. Really appreciated your perspective on this bike. Touring and commuting are indeed such different animals one almost has to have two bikes. Nonetheless, like you mentioned, some of us try to do both tasks with one BMW in the stable. Currently riding a K1600GT after switching from an R1200GS. And yes, those were some great roads there!

Can't wait to watch your review on the R1250RS.

The antenna is with the radio, which is (imho) a silly option. Had to edit - I cant wait to try it, I hope I can get one before next spring (Danish motorized vehicle taxes are not easy...) Thank you for the video! Very nice work, and very good picture quality, sound, edit, etc. Congrats!

The appreciation/thanks goes to my German wife, she spends about 4-5 hours on each video putting in the German subtitles. 😁

Higher rpm is the key to happiness with a boxer. Keep it at 4 to 6 thousand most of the time and the bike will show you that it’s meant for that. Safer too, with added stability in corners and a quicker stop response time.

Love your reviews, and the safety message. I've got a Tracer 700, that you liked. Please review the CB650R, that I'm buying soon. Gleeful and safe riding.

I have just received my new 1250 RT and I have driven + 2'600 km. Almost perfect, you ride on a laser beam, comfort is perfect even with a passenger. I really love it. I however regret the following: 1. no LED nor xenon main lights, still H2. Even low cost scooters made in Vietnam have LED lights now. 2. the antenna is really ugly and could be hidden in the windshield and somewhere else on the bike. 3. The radio is still not DAB+, just FM and other frequencies from ancient times. 4. the ipod connection could be improved with a better menu like in my 5-year old Skoda. You also need to buy a connecting cable for more than 90 USD. 5. the GPS can't be locked and must be removed every time you leave the bike in the street. So there is lots of space left for improvement left for this premium bike that costs + 26'000 USD...

Doesn't the GPS get locked when the windshield comes down ? My K 1600 GT locks automatically when I turn off the bike .

Hey, Scott. Really nice review of this bike. I recently watched another review of this bike and the reaction to it was much the same. Seems the new engine is really taking this bike to the next level. It could be just me but I think they should have updated the cockpit of the '20 model with the new full color setup, the current cockpit is starting to look a bit dated. When I made my purchasing decision back in 2017 I went with the Triumph Trophy SE over the RT, mainly because I dug that triple and how nimble the bike was/is. Slightly better knee angle as well. Now BMW has upped the game! At some point I may want to go give this new RT a look. I should mention that not only have I taken some epic rides with this machine, I commute with it as well! It's actually well-suited for that mission because the bike is big enough to be seen and offer protection but not too big to be a liability in thick traffic. I do over 110 miles a day and she takes good care of me. Thanks again!

Thanks Dennis, yea, wait for BMW to give it the 6.5" TFT with all the integrated electronics and connectivity that goes with it. I could ride this bike all day long every day for months on end and not get sore or tired. A truly great touring machine. When I get done with a review some bikes I want to give back and others I want to keep, this was one of those that I wanted to keep; keep riding and riding and riding and...well, you get the point. When I first started riding the F800ST many years ago, it was the most fuel economical BMW bike and, amazingly, the RT was the second-most efficient. Now that WLTP figures should be out and the range is significantly different, I need to they all stack up these days.

Great review and something I'd test ride next year when I plan to replace my 2016 FJR1300A. One thing I'm very disappointed in, it still has halogen headlights! Even my 2016 FJR is completely LED, no bulbs at all. C'mon BMW, at this price point, time to get with the program.

But halogen bulbs cost more than LED's. That's why the bike is so expensive. LOL!

Ah, you must have one of the early deliveries of the Hays brakes, I rode the GS, GSA & now the RT, and never experienced the "problem" with them. You were one of the lucky ones...lol. :( But yea, Brembo is the best!

Beautiful bike

I was really hoping they would have offered the TFT screen as an option on the 1250 RT. I would have upgraded my 2014 1200 RT for that, but since they didn't I went for the GS1250. Never did understand that Ariel. I used to commute into London on a daily basis on my old RT with no problem.

I am 190cm, and prefer the 830mm (high seat on low position). I agree with your views here on the RT, quite luxurious. Yet still feels supremely responsive. Interesting, first person I have heard say this , what I have also thought - the boxer suits this bike better than the GS. I mean, the boxer is fabulous in my view (torque where you actually run the engine) but it really shines here.

I test rode it like 3 times on different occasions. Then an offer came and got one ! It is quite agile for its looks and weight I got it because it is a touring bike on the sporty side of what touring means. I commute to work on it super easy and handy to carry your stuff. Have you see how the police handle these bikes on slow speed once the engine runs it is amazing how you can do 8’s and U turns.

AP, I have even watched 2 KZread videos of guys that have filmed themselves on a race track with the RT and they keep up with other sport / racing bikes or modified cars. Impressive to say the least but not what I would ever attempt. And yes, police motor units around the world use this bike for law enforcement because it does everything so well but I am amazed every time I ride how agile the bike is. Impeccable handling for such a large touring bike.

From an ‘Old Man’ on an ‘Old Man’s Bike’ (minus 50 cc’s - 2018 R1200 RT) - Right ON NtP!!! Could not agree more on all your points in the video. You stated all the reasons why I purchased mine. But among all of those reasons, Handling is the one I value the most, followed very closely by comfort / convenience. Power / Torque would be next but there is more than enough for my needs. Thanks for the great review and ride along!!! Cheers. 🥂 ps - Surprised to see you don’t use a DSLR for your videos. Video resolution was surprisingly sharp. Any plans to purchase a DSLR in the future?

Thanks STOPsign, na, no plans yet, I need to start making money from youtube before I can even pay for my current set-up, little alone expand to an expensive camera (DSLR) and a DSLR would not fit into my current backpack. Camera, batteries, lenses, bigger backpack, wow, I can feel my bank account crying just thinking about getting a DSLR. LOL! I own a 2009 RT. I have the standard seat at the highest position. Had to put in peg lowering kit and bar risers, but I am 6'5, 34" inseam. I'd love to get a new one, but the prices have gone up a lot. Where I live, the RT is around 26K US OTD. I paid 19k US OTD for mine with a 49L topcase. It's a big difference.

Has the 1250 RT have any issues like the k1600 models, between recalls on transmission and some had throttle body problems. Is the cost of maintenance different?. The k1600 sounds expensive to maintain

I really enjoyed my R1200RT a lot. One of the best overall motorcycles I’ve owned with one exception; cross winds could be downright frightening if they were unexpected gusts. Currently riding a K1600GT and loving it, except I do miss the light weight of the RT. Also could do a valve adjustment and oil change in 30 minutes. Definitely NOT SO on the 1600. Maintenance nightmare to work on.

That 90's antenna is finally gone in the 2021 models, new long TFT (no need for a Navi), plus active radar. To be perfect it needs reverse, and blind-spot monitoring.

Can’t wait to hear how you compare the rs to the r.

Great Review. I am still not sure if i want the RT or the K1600B/GA/GT. I do have GS and I want touring bike (as additional to the GS). I rode the K1600B twice, each time 4 days and over 1000 miles each time and love it.

Thanks Eitan, I rode these bikes pretty close together and the main thought that I came away with is that the RT is a lighter and more nimble in a corner and easier to maneuver in tight areas. Power...same. Take an RT for a test ride, they are both touring bikes but they do it in different ways. Ride safe, Scott

I also hope that they will come with the long overdue refreshment to the dashboard and it will be replaced with TFT.

BMW needs to equip this motorcycle with their tft display or make it as as option then i would consider buying it :D

If you have the extra money then GSA wins. Use: any off-road, then GSA wins there too. This may be comfortable and high tech, the same with the RS and the K 1600’s, but why in the wide world of sports do they stay with the dial speedo and rpm gauges? It’s one of the most high tech bikes but low tech on the gauge cluster, WHY?

Beautiful bike indeed Mate. Would love to see a TFT screen and backlighted handlebar switches for night riding.

One big difference between 1250RT and K1600GT: GT you can ride on 6th from 40km/h up. Many times I ride 50km with turns and roundabouts on 6th... Boxer hate low rotation. 6th need more than 3000 rpm and thats why I didnt get RT. If you are lazy tourer: only K1600

I tried one 1250 RT, I found I was seating too low, legs folded, whilst I am used to an 840 mm high seat, although I am only 5’9 (1,75 m). Now they might have set up the machine on low, that would explain. I also found that vibrations would appear in tbe range 50/60 km/ hr. did you experience that too ? For touring and curvy roads on the mountains, how would you compare it to the Tiger 1200 XCA ? Based on point of view of comfort, agility, piloting pleasure . Cheers.

A little, yes, but all you need to do was go up or down a gear and it goes away. I would not compare the RT to the Tiger 1200 XCA, two different machines. Compare the GS/GSA to the XCA, yes, I would take the GS over the XCA any day, simply because the weight is less/lower and easier to manage in low speeds. But looks, the XCA wins IMHO. So it really depends on what you want in a bike, like I say most of the time it's a matter of the heart not mind.

Hasn't this bike got LED main lights ? Don't BMW cars have LED lights ?

It seems like bmw is going to upgrade this bike soon. Lots of tech like the tft panel are missing on this bike. For those who didn’t bought, maybe it’s better wait a little more.

Will be interesting to see how the whole shift cam thing works out. The antenna is just not right, BMW put it into the windshield like the car industry did decades ago.

I would agree but the problem is a lot of people change out the wind screen and that would present a problem.

Any plans to ride the '21 RT, Scott? Would love to hear your thoughts on the new features, none in stock near me yet for a test ride (Iowa).

You have to pull the seat off and adjust is manually then put the seat back on. It's pretty normal for a seat height adjustment. I can't answer the radio quality question, sorry. Ride safe, Scott

Those side loading saddlebags seem really dumb, wouldn't all your stuff just fall out, especially the left one when the bike is on the side. Why would BMW make them top loading like a Harley Electra Glide saddlebags? I agree with you about that dumb looking antenna. I'm nearing 70 and I'd like to see a reverse gear shaft drive on my next bike.

Hi Scott, just need to ask this question. I’m not sure if it’s a dumb question or not but if you find the time I’d love to know your choice. Having reviewed the 1250GSA and this 1250RT aside from the obvious off road capability of the GS/GSA which bike would you buy? Occasional touring about 300-500km but mostly short rides on the twisties/canyons... thank you hoping for a feedback

Thank you Bobby, na, that's not a dumb question, you're not the first to as that question. Touring the RT wins but in everything else the GS/A wins. I just spent 1200km and 3 days with 4-5 GS/A and 2 RT riders and the GS/A will go a lot faster in a corner than an RT. The RT is a great bike but if you want to do twisties and do them faster, then the GS is it and it does it in comfort albeit not as comfortable as the RT but still comfort. Ride safe, Scott

Now it’s a clearer to me so gsa it is... initially I was also considering waiting for the RS to come out in the Philippines. it’s not yet released here. But after your review with the RS might need to scratch it out. I’m currently riding the rninet racer with helibars on I like the bike for short rides so I’m considering a bike for longer rides that’s fun and comfy so I guess if you are me GSA wins hands down right? NothingToProve 1 more thing I hope you don’t mind I abuse a little. Hehehe... between GS and GSA since the suspension in a A is longer would you say that the GS is better in cornering faster or the same? Since the GSA is more comfortable according to most reviews.

RT, simply because the weight and sheer size of the 1600 is more than I want to handle every day.

I have a 2005 SE model (with servo brakes) travelled 90,000 + km's and yes it does commute quite well. I'm not sure I'd be prepared to spend the $'s on this new iteration. Maybe a second hand one :^). That is just my 2 cents worth.
