2018 Yamaha Virago / Vstar 250 17/40 Sprocket Swap WITHOUT bike stand + 114 to 112 O-Ring Chain Swap

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Timestamps way below:
In this video I swap my 2018 VStar 250 Sprockets from stock 16/45 to 17/40 and install a new 112 link chain, replacing the stock 114 link.
I don't have a motorcycle jack - so I used 2 car jacks and this method to get it done :)
I strongly suggest watching the video, or the parts you want to learn, FULLY before attempting anything I do. If you do not properly install your sprockets / chain, you could do serious damage to your bike or YOURSELF. I'm not a mechanic, so this video should be used for entertainment purposes only.

Do you own a bike stand or plan on having to rig something up like I did? I'm curious to know if their was an easier way to do it....

New sub. Thanks for the information. Just purchased a 1989 Yamaha Virago XV250 Route66 model. I have yet to go pick it up (COVID-19 bs) lol I hope to get back to riding after having my last ride stolen and trashed (2015 Honda PCX150). Not sure what direction I will go with the bike but riding is on the list for sure. Small modifications are in line from the carb/air filter/gear change etc etc. Saving this video as well as iRidetas and Biker Bits information. Salute 07 and "2wheels down head on a swivel"

I have the exact same bike, about 1 year ago I did the same sprocket switch. I'm kinda heavy at 250 lbs I'm getting over 80mpg (84.5 on my last fillUp ) I get my best performance using Chevron gas. I live in a small town in the mountains so most of my riding is country roads and 2 lane highways. My next mod is to get ride of those 2 plastic covers ( air filter ) and replace it with a after market air filter cover. I'm trying to learn about the correct carburetor adjustment needed.

Great video! I've ridden mostly big ass BMW GSs for the past 10 years or so, and now I realize I've been corrupted by the power and comfort of the big bikes, while the fun was hiding in the little ones :) I've switched to the little Virago a few months back, and did the 17:40 swap. Now there's a question: does any of you manage to go over 105kmph with this 17:40 setup? It's all fine and dandy, and cruising at 100kmph is a charm, but i can't get it over the 105 mark without a going downhill or a proper wind from the back. Also, fuel consumption is around 4l/100km or 60mpg in imperial. I've cruised some 10 fill-ups in this setup, and i've measured very carefully. I'm not complaining about anything, I just want to make sure that it's normal. I'm 1.75 meters and around 85 kg fully loaded. Cheers!

I've had it up to 75mph [120kph] before on flat ground with little wind. I might have been tucking lol. I also weigh about 150 lbs. The RPMS at that speed are where it used to be at 55-60mph with the stock sprockets, and I sort of remember being able to give it more if I wanted to, however I was restricted with traffic. TBH I would check the tuning of your bike. On my last ride where I cruised around for about 120 miles on country roads, I was able to fill up and calculated a whopping 98MPG efficiency. Normally I would be somewhere around 75-80mpg efficiency. I almost broke 100mpg... my little Honda Metro 50 barely would break 100.. And speaking of little bikes, yes they are a blast to ride. The super light weight makes them ultra nimble, and you feel very connected with the road. [maybe due to sub par shocks lol] I used to drive my little Honda Metro 50 scooter around everywhere like a bat outta hell.... and top out at 40mph. But it was a FUN 40mph... those tiny wheels and road hugging height made it ride like such a fun toy. At the end of the day, its all about having fun right? :)

Nice upgrade! Thanks for the video! I have the same motorcycle and I will most likely do the same swap. Mine's got an annoying vibration/buzz after 55mi/hr and I think this upgrade will definitely get rid of it. Did your bike have the same buzz?

hey George, I can't say that I've heard a vibration / buzz, but I've heard reports of the front sprocket working its way loose and is best to make sure its held tight with some loctite. The swap was worth it. I could have went 17/38 for a bit more of a change, but I honestly don't regret the 17/40. Much different ride and I still have a bit of power if I need to accelerate in 5th at 55mph
