2009 xv250 rear sprocket change

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is video 2 of 2. Part 2 shows how to change the rear sprocket on a V-Star 250 motorcycle. In it, I'm changing the 45T front sprocket for an after market 40T unit. This was my first attempt. After a week's worth of riding to/from work, I highly recommend the swap.

I have done this similar upgrade.(38t rear sprock.standard 16t front) Its like having an extra gear on top end .Always felt like it was over revving on the original set up but now much better, faster cruising speed without revving the nuts off the engine . I highly recommend this upgrade .

I strongly recommend using a torque wrench when tightening up the sprockets. It's 55 Nm rear, 10 Nm front. Blue loctite isn't a bad idea either. If you're willing to do this work, it's not the last time you're going to need a torque wrench / metric socket set. It's also 23 Nm for the brake bolt and 104 Nm for the axle nut. I had a clutch holder which helped as well to prevent things from moving when tightening them up. And like another commenter said, make sure to lubricate the master link.

Well, I did it. I love the change. My chain was too long so I wasn't able to do it overnight like you because I don't have a chain cutter. The dealer did it for me. The only thing is that my rear tire is all the way back. Thanks.

El7Cantante7, glad to help. I bought my kit at the local Yama dealership. As for the performance - those little tomato can sized pistons are working overtime to haul me around. Still, I can count on the bike to do 55 MPH under worst conditions (in 4th) and hum along happily @ 75MPH (in 5th) under ideal conditions. Tususpop, in 4th, no, in 5th, yes. HTH.

Thank you so much for this video. I definitely have to do the same changes for the same reasons that you stated. I just wished that the video showed step by step ;) I have the same model. Thanks again.

the little packet that you thought was a moisture grabber, was actually white grease, & you should have used it to lube the X rings & the pins on the master link before you put it together. now you will have a premature failure of the master link on the chain from over heating & oxidation, & a lack of lube. in the joint..

Oh, forgot about the back sprocket. You can change the torque/range trade-off be changing the front/rear sprocket combo. After some months' research I found that 17/40 was the recommended place to start. Since I'm a bit on un-light side (210#/95kg) I may change the sprocket again to 42 or 43 to give me a bit more torque in 4/5.

In the first part of the video I changed the front sprocket from 16 tooth to 17 tooth (17T). The change trades torque for a broader speed range per gear. Assuming you have this model bike, you know that you have to switch into second almost immediately after you start moving and 5th just screams at highway speeds. The 17T configuration makes 1-4 more useable for in-town riding and 4-5 more useable for relaxed cruising. The trade off is that you can barely accelerate in 5th. HTH.

Do you know the spec torques for nuts on the front and rear sprockets of V star 250?

I know I'm two years too late, but for everyone else: 55 newton meters back, 10 newton meters front.

Sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner. @ 3:10 I think I id the chain as 112-link and it has a bunch of slack. On the bright side, however, I've not had to adjust the chain once since putting it on (that OEM chain suuuuuuuuuucks).

why would i have a slip in the rear sprocket on my vstar 250 (not the chain the hub), is it normal or is there something wrong

A "slip in the rear sprocket" isn't terribly descriptive, but it definitely does not sound good! Depending on what you mean, you might have some damage to the sprocket itself (maybe the bolt holes have stretched oblong), or you might need to tighten the axle nut, or (on the other side) your brake torque rod is loose. I would reference pg. 7-36 in your owner's manual for adjustment specs. Be sure to get that fixed before you ride it again. Keep the shiny side up!

What do you think with 17/43 set up? Do you think stock chain will fit?

I never did change to 43T - dropping to 4th until I get to the desired speed then shifting back has been good enough. Likewise, I do not know if the stock chain will fit, but the 112 I used was about mid-way in the adjustment range and hasn't had to changed since I first put it on!

Just had the chain and front and rear cogs changed on my 2009 VStar 250. When I picked it up, the bike "sounded" different. Also, the foot pedals were now right up on top of the brake and clutch! I can hardly get my foot in between to shift. Is this something that could have been caused by the tech while changing the chain? I'm not very pleased at the moment and will take it back ASAP to have them fix what they did.

Cathy Koschik I suspect they adjusted your brake and shifter so their technician could test drive the bike after install. You will have to bring it back to them so they can readjust the brake and shifter back to your desired position. Not sure what you mean by sounded different. New sprockets and/chain may make it a bit quieter. Also did you replace the sprockets with the same size or did you do what this guy did. If you went to different sized sprockets than the engine will rev lower and thus sound different (smoother and quieter)

Adam N I think the sprocket was the same size as the original. It has a higher pitched sound than before that is not from the engine. In fact, I never noticed a non- engine sound at all before. This is definitely something new. I'm taking it back this weekend, hoping they treat me with respect and don't take advantage since I'm a novice and a female. You have no idea how frustrating it can be.

Cathy Koschik it's quite possible it could be from an improperly adjusted chain or improperly lubed chain. It could even simply be a poor quality chain or even poor quality sprockets. Would interested to hear what they tell u.

svaz2006, where did you buy your kit? I'm definitely encouraged to do the swap myself by seeing your video. I guess if I get the same kit I should be alright. Also, I see that your video is 6 months old... any updates regarding the performance of the bike? Thanks again.
