OK so I just came back from Chevy and observed with the foreman of the service department we listened to this video first and my car second, again, at cold start. He told me it is the oil pump sucking the oil up through the oil pump mechanism and it's the sound of the pressure of the oil going through the pump so it could feed the engine and its normal. The reason why it doesn't make this sound after cold start is because it drained out of the oil pump mechanism. Fluid pressure racing through channels to destination. I'm not totally convinced that this is normal. Especially when you hear other people saying it's the starter, or it's the fuel injectors, etc. He said the old car pumps were submerged in the oil pan and the new ones are not that's why they make a noise. Don't know why they changed the engineering. It is a ridiculous sound, it sounds like metal to metal. If anybody has a difference of opinion, a more technical response to this freaking noise, please post.

I am no engineer but having an oil pump not submerged in the oil reservoir just sounds like a horrible idea. Maybe that's why my 2018 had metal shavings in several oil changes. I drive this truck like my grandmother most of the time and I still get tiny pieces of metal shavings in my oil when I change it. Definitely not a fan of modern engineering between the stupid 8 cylinder pretending to be a 4 cylinder half the time while I'm driving and all the other weird engineering signs makes me miss my 1984 K20

It’s normal, the high pressure fuel pump for the direct injection is mechanical, when the truck sits a while the pressure leaks back the sound you hear is the pump rapidly building pressure again. You can still hear the pump as a tick while the engine runs warm.

@@happyhippo58 , Thanks for your post. I was wondering how you know concretely know that it's definitely the high-pressure fuel pump. I have been on several KZread channels with several explanations like starter housing, needed a new starter, fuel pump as you said, oil pressure pump priming, its normal, etc. Just because many people on the post say it's normal they all do that doesn't mean it's NOT going to shorten the life of the car. How did you come up with your solution to this noise? Thanks for your help

swc opmac I worked as a supplier for General Motors providing X-ray inspection of these motors (gen5) and the previous gen4 v8 as well as the current HFV6 block. So I was around all the talk when things came up. They all do it (gen5) after sitting a while. I don’t know about 2019 models though.

Mine does the same exact thing, always from a cold start! I was reading some online forums, and they are saying this is a normal sound, and has to do with the DI fuel injection system. Nevertheless it bothers me to, I'm doing a oil change this weekend and adding Lucas oil additive, not sure if it will help at all, but I'll feel better knowing I'm taking a extra precaution for wear protection. Good luck!

Okay so a lot of guys are saying it is the oil pressure system they changed that is causing it, and I believe that the most out of the other theories as this is happening with my 2015 5.3L. My only concern is why did it start to happen at 150,000 miles and not earlier

AHha!! Exact noise my 2015 makes! I took it to 2 dealerships, and they all said it was normal. Then they printed out a sheet of noises these Silverado’s and Sierras make. They said the DI’s and the oil pumps makes this braap sound on cold start up. GM’s new tech.. still irritates the hell outta me..

I took my truck in for a 2nd opinion because the noise is super loud if the temp is under 30 and was told it’s a bearing in the starter which I totally disagree. Doesn’t make a sound after the 1st cold start unless it sits for an extended period and again if the temps on low.

The sound heard in this video is the mechanically driven high pressure fuel pump rapidly building pressure. It’s normal for this engine and the pump can typically be heard as a low groan among the ticking of the injectors at idle.

my 2015 does this too and along with it it maintains a low growl from the same whatever causes this noise. really I can hear it whine all the time because I have sharp hearing, sounds almost like power steering but since these have electronic assist that cant be it. I am starting to think it is just a normal thing for these as annoying as it is.
