2018 Mutt Motorcycles Fat Sabbath 125 Review - Is This The Coolest 125cc Motorbike You Can Buy?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Here are my initial impressions and review of the Mutt Motorcycles Fat Sabbath 125. A cool looking scrambler style motorbike that looks and sounds way better than a 125cc bike ever should :)
Full details and specs of the bike are at:

And a huge thanks to Mutt Motorcycles HQ in Birmingham for lending me the bike to review:

Lovely looking bike. I'm looking for a 125 for a 40 mile (round trip) commute. Approaching my 40's, the general step through mopeds feel a bit young to turn up to work in, whereas these feel mature in design. Love it.

I just recently bought a Mastiff basically the same bike with just a few minor changes, to be honest, the fuel-injected Suzuki 125 engine is very fast for 125, gears are fantastic going up and coming down had a few issues locking up but could just be tight as new. The seat is a problem in extreme weather stitching lets in water but it doesn't dry out that fast plus the seat is more like a plank of wood. What I couldn't grasp is the use of hard plastic brake pipes on moving parts such as forks and rear swing arm, surely with sunlight and constant movement they will fracture in time. I'm a time-served Mechanic who did an apprenticeship with Daimler, Rolls Royce, and Jaguar back in the early 80s I find possible issues on everything very fast. I bought one for a commute in bad weather as my Hayabusa tends to try and go sideways at low power in bad weather and my old GPZ doesn't like wet weather miss fire badly. The Mastiff is fantastic in bad weather brilliant little very quick bike if you are quick up the gears for its power band.

Hi James, I felt fine on it (I'm 6ft) so it could be ok. The only real way to find out is to go and sit on one and see what you think. Some 125's (not Mutts) do have smaller frames than bigger bikes though. A very different alternative may be something like a Honda Varadero that is big for a 125.

Hi, just out of interest, how's the bike in 2021? Have you had any problems or had to repair it much in the past few years? I've been looking at getting one, but i'm a bit cautious as they're such a new bike. If I buy a Honda or Suzuki, I know they have a long track record of being reliable bikes, but forking out £3.5k for an unknown bike is a bit off-putting for me. Cheers

I just had it for the day to review rather than being long term owner. However, I do occasionally follow the Mutt Facebook group and forums and reliability seems to be decent. There were some common minor issues with early bikes (e.g. rear indicator stalks breaking) but overall they do have a decent reputation.

Hi rich - I’d love to get into biking via the mutt 125 , however my wife is worried about the safety accept. What’s your thoughts? Being a 125 is it safer than starting than on anything bigger?

  • @RichRides

    @RichRides

    3 жыл бұрын

Safety was why I'd avoided motorcycles all my life up until about 5 years ago. Unlike a car you're obviously very exposed so need to ride as though everyone else is trying to kill you and also not ride beyond your skill and ability. I bought and rode a 125 for about 6 months (and 4000+ miles) before taking my full test and getting a bigger bike. I personally think that's a good idea as there's far less chance of getting yourself into trouble on a 125 or the power being overwhelming.

I didn't really go on bigger faster roads but I don't remember it struggling at that speed. Typically, 125's will top out at 60-70 and that's about it though (apart from some older 2 strokes and newer bikes like the GSXR125). If you're not even getting to 60 (on the flat with no headwind) I think it's worth getting it checked out.

Me too :) But in the UK you can ride a 125cc with basic training (CBT) rather than have to get a full license. The cost of a CBT is around £100 where a full license is around £800 these days! There are also age restrictions for a full license. This is why you see so many 125cc bikes in the UK.

To be honest a 125 gives you all the performance you'll ever need, whilst costing beans to run. A 250 gives you a healthy performance margin, so that's great.. More than that and I found they just get irritating to ride because you can't use the performance, but can certainly feel the heft and cost. 250 is nice - their performance usually suits road use very nicely.

Hi Guy. The new Mutt's (like this one) have a smaller Mutt branded speedo unit that just has a neutral light rather than a gear display. I also rode an older 250 Mutt (review coming soon) with the previous speedo unit and that did have an LED digit gear indicator in it.

  • @RichRides

Hi John, they may start life in the same factory (who produce HMC, Lexmoto, Sinnis, Mash) but they're quite different with lots of changes, better parts fitted, and much better quality allround imo. Here's what Mutt's founder replied when asked about it 5 years ago: " The Sinnis bikes and the HMC and I believe Mash are all made at the same factory and are indeed the same frame and share many other parts. The Mutt is based on a HMC which as you say retails at £1500 as it comes from the factory. The Mutt is an altered version of the HMC and has modifications made here in the U.K after it leaves the factory which is why it is more expensive than the standard HMC and Sinnis bikes. As you rightly say the standard 16″ wheels on these bikes don’t look right so the Mutt has had the rear wheel laced to an 18″ rim with stainless spokes and of course new tyres front and back. You will find out when you re-lace your rear hub to a taller rim on your retrostar that you run into clearance issues with your rear mudguard and frame so you will need to fit stiffer shocks and alter the rear mudguard which may also involve a new rear light and number plate bracket. The Mutt has had better adjustable shocks fitted (although they were not fitted in the above photos) and a new mudguard, light and number plate holder fitted. I assume you will be also changing the stock exhaust and silencer on your retrostar, which will involve cost, fabrication and chrome, the Mutt has a modified exhaust system which is then chromed, a new Burgess silencer and new silencer bracket.. all small things but they add to the cost of the original HMC. Add to this a new paint job, ally front mudguard (also not in this pic but comes with the bike for the £2900) a hand fabbed and powdercoated front mudguard stay, new bars, new brake line, new grips and a full tank of gas and the cost soon adds up, the bikes are also gone through top to bottom and test ridden and re checked before being handed over to the customer ( with a full tank of fuel) and of course these changes take time to do so there is also a labour cost involved and associated overheads which brings the Mutt to the price it is. If someone can lace wheels, fit tyres, weld and have a chroming plant and spray booth then I’m sure they could do something similar for less but we really are trying to provide an affordable cool small cc bike for people who can’t or do not wish to do the work themselves and also hopefully inspire younger people into building bikes. I hope this goes someway to explain the price difference between the Mutt and standard HMC’s and Sinnis bikes. A lot of people have been saying the Mutt is the same as Mash bikes or Sinnis bikes and these people are either not looking and reading or don’t really know much about motorcycles. I’m certainly not saying the Mutt is a superior machine to either but it is a customised version and in the flesh does sound, look and ride considerably differently to the stock factory bikes. If anyone wants to see the Mutt compared to the standard HMC’s there will be a Mutt on the HMC stand at the NEC bike show in a week or so. keep your knees in the breeze. Benny"

These look and sound very cool, but I'm guessing they are very low quality chinese build and will give you lots of headaches after some time. And that might be perfectly fine in a retro-cool "I love to work on my bike" kind of way, but they're not that cheap to begin with. For not much more you can geat a very nice 125cc Honda and be happy.
