    i love bikes like this. built like monsters and capable of going anywhere. they remind me of bikes we used to chop together in the 80's that werent made for speed or style, they were made for country roads, fields, dirt roads and off roads and where easy to work on and cheap to maintain.

    Hi mate, nice review! As a newby myself who loves the look of the classics, I'm tossing up between something like this or an interceptor, which by the time they're both on the road is only a couple of grand difference. In your opinion, would a newby be better off going for something like a mutt, or growing into the interceptor?

  • @ThrottleDownunder

    @ThrottleDownunder

    G'day Grant. One of the Owners of Mutt Aus is 6 2 and he commutes daily on one. The 2020 versions are also slightly taller than the previous model. 250 is a brilliant bike capacity. Light and let's you give it rice without killing yourself. But that said 80mph into a brick wall is just as dodgy what ever bike you're on Bet you'll leg this easier than any big bore adventure bike out there. I'm 66 started riding in 1970 so had a few bikes of many capacities and plan to get one after I've saved enough pension up. A decent bare bones bike. Hair? I'm a little late but unfortunately, you've been misinformed... it's not actually a Suzuki engine, it's a Chinese remake BASED on the Suzuki engine. Mutt claims its from a Suzuki partner but they don't state what kind of partner...it doesn't mean that their copied engine has been officially approved by Suzuki. These bikes might work just fine but you should be careful with this misinformation... I think it's nice that you really like the blokes from mutt but at the end of the day, they're trying to sell you something. They import the main parts of this bike and make them look a little nicer, replace some of the cheaper parts, and then put a hefty hipster tax on it because of the design. I bloody love their designs but it's just not right to brand these bikes as "British made" and stuff like that. Also not right of you to claim it's running the Suzuki GN-250...Don't want insinuate you knew this wasn't true, I just thought it was important to point out the misinformation:)

    The price tag of $8000+ On the road is absurd! These are spruced up Chinese bikes with questionable reliability and will rust away within a couple of years. The same bikes go under different brand names: Sol Invictus and the now defunct Braaap. Do yourself a favour and buy Japanese - cheaper, safer and much better supported by their dealership network.

    I do love how people make judgements on these bikes being so called unreliable and rust buckets. Tell me, in your infinite wisdom, what experience do you have of ownership of one of these bikes? I made the mistake of buying a second hand Yamaha YBR125 with 11,000 miles on the clock (with full history) after getting my CBT, I hated the thing. It looked weedy and way too small for me, I always felt a little embarrassed pulling into petrol stations on that skinny piece of shit. Anyway, after 700 miles of ownership, the thing just decided to die on me (local bike tech said there was little to no compression and therefore suspected piston and rings) So I sold it as a non runner and got a fairly decent price on it to be fair but that was not what I needed as a learner, so no, not all Japanese bikes are amazingly reliable! Anyway, I went out a week later and bought a Mutt Mongrel 125 and it’s a great little bike for me to learn my craft on. It fits me well, sounds fantastic and always gets lots of positive attention from people. Most of these bikes will be bought new by learners like me, who will be taking their full A licence shortly after and then will trade them in or sell them privately (good money selling private too) to move on to bigger bikes.

    @@JP-yc1wp My wisdom is far from infinite but I do exercise a modicum of judgement before I part with my cash. For example, I never bought a "weedy" bike that was "way too small" or one that I was "embarrassed" to be seen on. These are all traits that should be fairly obvious prior to purchase. I did inspect a low km, barely 1 year old Sol Invictus (basically the same bike) and it had surface rust, a sagging seat and a rough idle. Sounds to me like you are trying to justify your decision and I wish you luck, but you'd be deluding yourself if you believed that a Mutt Mongrel 250 is in the same league as, say, a Honda CB300R, which BTW is over $1000 cheaper in Australia. The 125 is not sold here, but I bet you London to a brick that a CB125F would run rings around it.
