2018 Mustang EcoBoost Review // 10-Speed Automatic

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today we're checking out a 2018 Ford Mustang EcoBoost equipped with the all new 10-speed automatic transmission. This Mustang Ecoboost was a blast to drive, was nice to look at, and would make for a very practical, daily drivable sports car despite the quirky 10-speed auto! Enjoy my review of this 2018 Ford Mustang Ecoboost!

    I got my black six speed Eco Boost six months and 6,500 miles ago. I am 63 and drive it pretty hard. It's a blast. And I got it out the door for $21,500, so do your homework and dealing. And it does everything so nicely. I like the sound of it, it's very quick off the line....not 440 hp off the line, but the 310 hp is still plenty impressive. And I only run 87 octane in it and it runs great. It corners great in the mountains too. Not really any lag on the turbo and it's got so much torque down low. The "base model" is loaded with standard features. It cruises at 90 mph in sixth gear and it's loafing. On a 2,500 mile road trip to Wisconsin it was faultless. And I was running at 100 mph though Texas. The price was about what you'd expect to pay for a standard sedan. I even test drove the SUV's, but the Mustang was just the right car for me. I would say Ford has a real winner in the Eco boost, it's a lot of car for the money and it's fast and fun. Tom Rolland

    The Ecoboost is going to look pretty attractive as gas prices progress to even higher levels. To me they seem to be a decent hybrid between power & torque and fuel efficiency. There's not many affordable cars out there that combine over 300hp, sporty appearance and handling plus average gas MPG in the 20's under $30,000.

    The 2018 10 speed car hauls ass - I'm conflicted if i should have gone with the manual 6 speed- I feel sometimes i need that extra engagement with the car. The car is beautiful tho I really enjoy mine and looking at it - She really loves to open up on the interstate. Shifting with paddles is fun a new experience for me i mostly keep it in normal auto mode now. Switching the steering mode is a cool feature. You do experience the car shift alot at lower speeds but the ride is still comfortable. She is a very capable car as a daily driver and if you step on the gas you will fly. Fuel eco is so so in city - Interstate ofc its better. The audio system is pretty darn good also, she is something else. I enjoy the seats the dashboard and cluster is sexy. The car is overall just a sexy beast imo. Its a "refreshing" car to drive is how I would describe it as the AC is ice cold. Bad stuff: The cat converter went bad under 1k miles dealership replaced it, now no check engine lights at 5k miles. This makes me question the quality of other stuff under the hood. There is a fuel smell from A/C when i choose to pull from outside air. Not sure if this is normal or not. I use recycle air from in cabin now but having the dealership look at it just in case. I read the story of those cops passing out from from exhaust leaks, not chancing that one. I feel fuel economy could be better in city daily driver situations. even when i baby foot it she likes to sip gas. There is a slight rattle in the rear left of car but that is minor. She is governed at 120 mph, I guess this maybe considered good for some this can be replaced with a tune if need be. I would recommend but maybe test drive the 6 speed before they let you talk you into a 10 speed like me.

    As far as the gas leak smell the dealership states because its a new car its the smell of chemicals They did not detect any gas leaks, In the cat converter or fuel line. Hopefully thats the case..using in cabin recycled air works just fine for now.

Which was apparently underrated as most of these Japanese sports cars are...especially the older 90s cars with that "276 hp" legal agreement. The Evo 8 from 2003-2005 made 276 hp with variations in the UK like FQ300, 320, 340, 360 & 400 made anywhere from 305hp - 400hp And the standard Evo 8 that north americasaw with "276" HP actually made around 330hp. Which I mean... Is pretty impressive for being 15years old. But again, uncommon.

    Mustang is a way of life Its not connected to the audio volume so it can’t be adjusted. Ford does pipe the engine audio through speakers. It’s not a fact that I just made up. Many manufacturers do this nowadays because of how heavily insulated modern cars are. You wouldn’t hear an exhaust note inside of the car at all otherwise.

    The engine to me is impressive, but not "that" impressive. Compare.. - 2018 Mustang Eco - 310HP/350lbs-ft 0-60 in 5.3secs - 2009 BMW 335i - 300HP/~346lbs-ft 0-60 in 4.5secs And both engines supposedly have similar torque ratings. Explain that one to me. Especially since the Mustang weighs ~100lbs less than a 335i.

  • @GrahamCain

    @GrahamCain

    6 жыл бұрын

    the 2018 Ecoboost has 310hp, not 350hp so that brings them a little closer together in power. Supposedly the Mustang will do 0-60 "in under 5 seconds" as well but there aren't many real world tests yet so we'll have to see if that's true. Motortrend managed 5.2 with a fully loaded Premium Fastback which really adds on the weight. After researching the BMW though I've only been able to find tests as low as 5.3 seconds but most say >5.5 seconds. It would be an interesting pair to lineup for sure!

  • @Condor1970

    @Condor1970

    6 жыл бұрын

    You're right, I had the HP and torque switched in my head for some reason. Anyway, Here is a link to various 335i inline-6 times taken over various years. www.zeroto60times.com/vehicle-make/bmw-0-60-mph-times/ Most standard 335i's get just under 5secs. Most around 4.7-4.9secs. A Dinan tuned 335i like my friends will easily do 4.3-4.5 seconds. I have driven his 335i, and I believe it. All the regular 335i's I have tested are also much quicker than any stock ecoboost. I have driven both the manual and 10sp auto in the ecoboost, and there is no way it beats a 335i. It's very peppy, but not anywhere near that serious. That 335i runs times equivalent to the stock 2015-17 5.0L Mustang. However, the new 2018 5.0L with a 10R80 auto will walk all over any 335i I have ever driven. If Motortrend got 5.3secs, I'd really like to know how. Maybe they were using the "track only" app setting, but in a 335i, just having it in "sport" for daily driving will easily beat the ecoboosts I have tested. Plus, if you suddenly want to put your foot down on the ecoboost, you don't have time to switch to those other track settings. I'm not slamming the ecoboost at all, because I may just decide to get one of those over the 5.0L as a daily driver, but I wouldn't buy it thinking I can outperform my buddies 335i. That's just a pipe dream.

  • @GrahamCain

    @GrahamCain

    6 жыл бұрын

    Condor1970 I agree. I’m not entirely sure that is a very fair comparison though because the 335i should be faster than the Mustang. It’s .7 liters, 2 cylinders, and a turbo more than the Mustang has. I think it’s pretty impressive that a modern 4 cylinder turbo can actually compete with a twin turbo 6 of recent past!

  • @Condor1970

    @Condor1970

    6 жыл бұрын

    It's very, very impressive. I'm not knocking the 2.3L at all. For a car that you can get on discount for $20k, vs a 335i for more than double ($50k+), it's rather amazing to the point of snickering how that little 4-banger can hang with the big boys. But keep in mind, for a car that is less than half the price of the 335i, we also can't kid ourselves.

  • @GrahamCain

    @GrahamCain

    6 жыл бұрын

    I get what you’re saying completely! I just don’t think that the comparison between this and a 335i is very fair. You’re putting a 6 cylinder twin turbo car up against a 4 cylinder car with a single turbo. If you compare this car to BMW’s current 4 cylinder turbo, say the latest 330i, the Mustang will blow its doors and it’ll do it for half the price!

    All the driving modes, none of the power. This Millennial poster boy is afraid to say the car hauls...a-s-s. LOL! The Ecoboost (especially the automatic) is a good car if you can't drive a stick and you can't handle the speed. You're basically just getting a car that LOOKS like a Mustang. You might as well get one of those "peppy" Mazdas.
