About Tom:
Tom Voelk is an award-winning automotive contributor to The New York Times. His podcast was the first to win an Emmy Award. He also married way out of his league. Now, stop reading this promotional copy bragging about Tom's photography and editing skills and watch a couple episodes. It's much more interesting.

    My wife and I conducted our own market survey of both foreign and domestic Premium Crossovers SUV's. We concluded that the Cadillac XT5 Platinum was clearly for us. We bought the Cadillac XT5 Platinum and we're amazingly satisfied.

    Of all the channels I watch, i have to say that you provide the most soothing and reliable reviews. You provide information without hype and your insight is spot on and your humor is subtle. I used to love driving my father's company (pre-bustle) Seville back in the 80's and the '77 Toronado that my siblings left in tatters for my use. Big cars back in 70's and 80's were floaty and designed for interstates. Now we have refined tech coming out of the USA and it appears to be catching up. I'm up for a new car in about 18 months and it will finally be time to jump to the luxury class. This will be high on my list. Thank you. Keep up the great work.

    Tom.... Long time fan. Have been watching you since your children and wife were joining in on some of the reviews. You are a very crafty guy and ever so often give your 'evil twin' a cameo in your reviews. Your reviews are always spot on and have never encountered a 'bad apple' in the bunches you have shared. I hope your family is well. Continued success.

    Tom, another great review. I particularly enjoyed your take at the end about exploring all of the available choices in a given segment you are interested in when in the market. So many people refuse to consider great vehicles because they are nameplate biased without merit.

    Mostly because a lot of people are stupid, err I mean attracted to less professional, biased reviews from self appointed KZread "journalists" I've watched some automotive reviews from people that have very little idea what they are talking about but some how have large subscriber numbers. Baffles me.

    Another awesome video Tom. Couldn't agree more about Cadillac's nomenclature. Their concept cars have had some great names over the past few years (Escala, Converj, Provoq, Ciel, even as far back as the Vizon and Cien). Those are cool names! Wish they would start naming their cars using that same creative style.

    Great and informative review! FYI, the touch capacitive buttons that “didn’t respond right away” (on the lower panel) are not actually touch capacitive. They are normal switches behind a flexible black face. I read a while back that this was done to make certain operations easier to select without accidentally selecting something else as your finger moves around.

  • @brucec43

    @brucec43

    6 жыл бұрын

    1. The Aviator isn't available now. 2. When it comes out, it will sell at or above MSRP for up to a year due to demand. 3. Meanwhile, you can get thousands off Cadillacs. 4. Buy a barely used XT5. A '17 premium loaded awd here is for sale for $40,000 with 20,000 miles at a Caddy dealer. Luxury plus models are about $35,000 at a year old. Huge discount over new. 5. Year after year, model after model, Ford seats have not been great for comfort. Maybe they come up with something better, but I wouldn't count on it.

    Rear wiper comment: you need more visibility across the bottom of the rear glass vs the top...the wiper hinge at the top, will not clean the most needed glass...across the bottom. But with rear cameras, I don’t know how much that matters anymore.

  • @DrivenCarReviews

    @DrivenCarReviews

    6 жыл бұрын

    I ended up asking a Land Rover designer at the NY show about that. He claims packaging the wiper above is harder from a space consideration. There's more room for the motor in the door than there is in the upper frame. They managed to do it in Velar.

    It’s a GM so max a/c will have you frozen out in minutes. If you don’t want a vehicle with the stupid stop start system .. don’t buy one. I have a 17’ Malibu. The trick to shut it off in the chevys it to put the car in L6 or L9 (top gear). And the car will still run and drive normal but not shut off at all under any circumstances. Becomes a bit dangerous when you need a downshift to pass and it wants to stay in top gear but way better than hearing the engine churn on and off at every stop.

    Very true Tom, but the people that are brand loyal are going to buy what they want and not think twice about cross-shopping. Things like panel gaps and average nav graphics won’t even be a concern. I’m from Detroit, where this mind set is inflated because of all of the assembly plants. Here, everyone knows someone that works for the big three. So not only do they get incentives at the dealer, they also get A-Plans on their car purchases, which means if you know someone that works for the big three, you get special deals on cars.

  • @DrivenCarReviews

But it's also arguable that it simply created the expensive off-road SUV segment whereas Cadillac pumped the original Escalade full of luxury stuff like multi zone climate control and Bose sound. And to add some history, the Escalade was a reaction to the Navigator, though Lincoln eventually abandoned that market to Cadillac. It has since returned with a vengeance.

    If someone wanted to get the XT5 Platinum trim with AWD fully-loaded, it gets way too freaking expensive. They need to make it more affordable to compete with the Q5 Prestige with AWD fully-loaded. That Q5 is less expensive than the Cadillac which is crazy. I thought that Cadillac while being a luxury brand, is supposed to be more affordable than the competition. They need to bring the pricing down for this car, because it's out of reach for the people who like & want that trim with AWD & that $1,600 driver assistance package

    I'm always curious why are people fixated on architecture sharing. Audi does it with VW, Lexus with Toyota, Infiniti with Nissan. It's done all throughout the industry. For some reason, when American brands do it, it's a cheap cost cutting move. Not sure how that perception happened. Perhaps a result of the blatant Cavalier/Cimarron connection where only the grille and taillights were changed.

    Driven Car Reviews people rag on Acura more than any other luxury brand. Look at all the top reviewers comparing them to their Honda counterparts some of them even saying it’s just a Honda in a suit. Certainly Lexus and Audi models are also blatant rebadges but for some reason they don’t get flack whatsoever.

    We have driven lots of brands, from BMW, Audi, Saab, Volvo, to Chevy, Ford, and Dodge/Ram. Panel gaps won't leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere in 100 degree temps. Fit and finish won't cost you $2500 for new catalytic converters. Materials quality won't drive you mad taking it in for burned out lights and warning signals. Prestige means you pay $1500 for a set of tires (BMW X5 SAV) instead of $800.(F150 with big 305 tires). Caddys are not reliable, but the seams and carpet being slightly off is not a major concern vs the above issues I have experienced on much more well fitted European vehicles. Get the Acadia version, save $10,000 off MSRP, and drive off a Denali version for $40K. Or pick up a new loaded XT5 for the same price and get a year longer warranty. It's a wash. Fit/finish quibbles are the purview of people who don't actually buy and own them, they just drive them for a week.

    Why are cars like this equipped with cylinder deactivation and auto stop? It's a $60k luxury SUV, at that price point with a vehicle like this, why do you need to save pennies on gas at the cost of reliability and the extremely annoying auto stop "feature"? I've driven a number of new GM products with it and it is NOT smooth and unobtrusive. I also don't think having the car turn itself off and on within 5 seconds at a stop sign saves any gas, if anything it burns more. Having to put the car in manual mode or blasting the A/C is not a realistic or comfortable way of disabling this garbage either.

    It doesn't save gas. It takes a typical 2.0L 4 cylinder engine 4 hours of idling just to burn through one gallon of gas. I don't know anyone unless you use it as an uber that idles for 4 hours in a day. If you ask me, its an excuse to meet the government standards and hey, if it increases wear and tear, they aren't missing out when you have to send it in to them to replace the starter. That being said, if I see the "Auto Stop" written next to the 0 RPM on the tachometer, it BETTER have that off button. If not, I take my business elsewhere. Plenty of the competition put the off button in so it's not like my options are limited. GM is the only one that tries to shove the system down your throat.

    Keep dreaming if you think Cadillac will bring back the classic names. As long as Johann deNamechange is in charge those models are getting alphanumeric names. In the short time he was at Infiniti the only thing he managed to accomplish was change the naming schemes of all the models. No later than a week after being hired at Cadillac he does the same there.

    "I suspect like I do with all GM products, there is a substantial amount of wiggle room built into the MSRP so dealers can offer what 'looks like' a better deal." What kind of ignorant comment is this? First off, there is less than $1500 in mark up in any Cadillac that is not an Escalade, so no, there is not substantial wiggle room with the XT5. An average commission of a salesperson on one of these is less than $400. Next, what "looks like" a better deal? I think its up to a buyer to think whether or not they got a good deal on a car. There is no objective definition of a good or bad deal. People like you are the reason why the general public still doesn't trust dealership employees.

    If you need AWD to drive in 65 degree rain, you should not be driving anything, or you should just slow yourself down and move into the right lane. Most accidents happen when you can't stop or slow down. AWD doesn't help you stop. I hate ads that show how fast you can drive in adverse weather.
