2018 Airstream Missouri (Airstream 534) - Detailed and in-depth walk-through

Put the kettle on - it's a long and detailed walk-through of a 2018 Airstream UK Missouri, formerly known as a European Airstream 534 Series 2. I take you for a thorough tour of the exterior and the interior, including an overview of the water systems, putting up the Zipdee Awning, and how I found using the wet room.

For this review, that you do not want to call a review, but was the best review of a caravan that I have ever seen, you deserve this caravan as a gift from Airstream and Swift. You are the best promotor they could ever wish for. And truly, you blend so beautiful with the colors. They must have made it for you. 😉

Excellent presentation. Another well laid out Airstream. Getting a cold shower after a long walk on a cold winter day might be a rather unsettling way for Dougal to end a pleasant adventure. You are right, warm showers on cold days for this precious little fellow :-)

Absolutely stunning caravan, probably worth the money for its exclusivity alone. However, I would only aspire to have one if they still did the 2 berth end washroom layout, like yours. An excellent 'real' and honest review, Andrew. You're already a great ambassador for the Airstream brand, with this review I hope they look after you well. In a completely different league, but speaking of caravan values, my first caravan a '98 Sterling Eccles Diamond was purchased in 2012 for just £2,000 including a starter kit, and after 2 years and plenty of use I sold it for £2850. Previous caravan purchased in 2014 was a 2005 Bessacarr Cameo 495SL which cost £4500, three years later and it went for £4,850. Not bad eh? Not sure the same will happen with the latest one, but you never know!

I've never owned a caravan and I've never heard of Airstream until I stumbled across your channel a few days ago. Not only is this a comprehensive in-depth review of this classic style of caravan, it also gave me an insight into a hobby which you guys truly love. Our family have only ever been camping in our VWT5 with a view of upgrading to the T6 California camper in the future. This really has thrown a cat among the pigeons. From a none caravaner, I don't see a jealousy factor at all between none Airstream caravans and Airstreams. I think that's just self induced within your community. Yes agreed, there's a hefty initial outlay for the Airstream, but if they hold their value as you say they do and coupled with their excellent build quality then I think I know where my money would go. Great review Andrew, Thanks. PS I do hate Marmite though :-) John

As for me, I will gladly sacrifice bathroom space for the kitchen space and functionally. I wish the smaller U.S. models would follow the kitchen design. Usually it's a small countertop that is filled with the sink and the stove. I think they've forgotten that some of us still cook from scratch even when we're out camping in our trailers. Thanks for a good review.

However as a motorhome owner I do take a slight issue (not enough to get me off the couch and marching in the streets) with your price comparison, but as you said, horses for courses. Andrew, I live in the States, and have NEVER seen quite a review! I've always loved the Airstream travel trailers and Motorhomes. Obviously, Swift outfits the interior with different kitchens ( you hardly see Franke sinks in homes over here, not to mention the wonderful oven/cooktop), but I don't think our Airstreams have the Alde heating and hot water systems. I'm considering the move from a home to a mobile way of living myself and have found your vlog very encouraging, even as a single Dog Dad myself. Many, many thanks, with warm regards!

Hi Andrew, In-depth look at the 2018 Airstream Missouri UK travel trailer. Interesting to hear the retail values for purchasing the trailer & tow vehicle in the UK. Much more costly a purchase then here in N American, by 50% or more! Just don't understand why there is so much difference in cost, crazy! As always you Sir present your vlogs with so much flair and good nature a true pleasure to watch!

The UK specification is much higher than what we get by default in the US. The interior fitments are a much higher grade / specification. The unit has been specified for the UK market and use UK suppliers for the chassis, interior component, as well as dual treatment for water and waste storage. Vehicles in the United Kingdom tend to be 20-30% more expensive. www.airstream-europe.com/pricing/

Anthony C Brown Hi Anthony, Thank you for your detailed reply. I based my opinion on personal knowledge of Airstream, having owned numerous units over the decades. Checkout on KZread vids from Colonial Airstream, Patrick Botigela. It is clear from these promotional video th e N. American Airstreams are more standard equipment in addition to being much less of a purchase price for a new 2018 unit. The quality of construction in no different, if anything the NA Airstream has more standard equipment, better isolated, solar ready/equipped, the list goes on and on my friend.....

  • @anthonycbrown1952

Thanks or the detailed reply as well. As someone who lives in the US and UK, people sometimes do not realize the price quoted includes VAT (tax) of approximately 20%. There is a near $6000 cost to ship the Airstream from the US that is reflected in the cost. With respect, there are differences between the Airstreams sold for use in the UK compared to the US clearly noted on the Airstream Europe web site. I own an IS 23 FB and know the SPECIFIC differences. The 23ft units like the one in the video have real leather seating (not offered in the US) and central heating from Alde (not offered in the US). The sink in the kitchen is a premium Franke sink. The bathrooms com fitted with custom fixtures and heated towel racks. The UK models are solar-ready as well. I have purchased units from Colonial throughout the years and while there are similarities, there are many differences that account for the price difference.

  • @bobfitzpatrick947

Anthony C Brown Hi Anthony, I forwarded a few videos of 23fb Airstream sold in the NA market to Andrew. It is clear from these units the Airstreams sold here are much better equipped with standard equipment in addition to optional equipment. Depending on your purchase location the applicable sales taxes will apply, so purchase your AIRSTREAM in a state with on sales tax. Yes you do pay a substantial shipping charge to get the units to England, & you pay more for some retrofitting of hitches etc.... But that being said the UK Airstream is being retailed at a HUGE profit margin compared to its NA cousin! Thanks for your dialog from one Airstream owner to another!

  • @bobfitzpatrick947

Anthony C Brown Hi Anthony, One other huge difference are these cassette black water holding containers. NA Airstreams have a huge bwtank, which if used correctly takes weeks before it is nessary to dumb it. The campgrounds here seam to have more hookups on site then in the UK.

Dear Andrew, My name is Peter and have to admit that i have grown very fond of Your reviews over time, particularly how honest You are and it makes me feel just the way i feel when i make my way to the dealer to see them in person after reading and watching as many publications on a giving caravan, so thank You for that. Now, I had my adria stage, my hobby stage, my polar stage i had my exporting one form the states stage, as I always was thinking that airstreams are just priced to high and i had my doubts about the whole concept. Today after watching Yours why i bought an airstrem and this one, my fate seems sealed :I want an airstream. will propably take me few years to get the money. is it worth to go to such extends, please say yes

Thanks for your kind comments Peter. I too had many caravans myself, and got my Airstream nearly 10 years ago. And I still love it. 10 years ago it cost me £37.5k. You can pay more than that for new German brand of caravan now. Have you thought of a decent used model? To be honest, it's only going to be worth the money if you hold on to it for a good number of years. But ask yourself this.. is it worth to keep losing money on replacing your van because it isn't what you REALLY want? ;@)

Love it, thanks Andrew for the walk through. But looking at the decor, it should be named the Montana (think home on the range). In the US some have mentioned how the curved edges on the cabinet fronts reduce the storage space within compared to a squared off edge.

  • @andrewjditton

    @andrewjditton

    6 жыл бұрын

Cheers Doug. I think the curvaceousness is quite necessary in UK models due to their narrower (7ft 6) width, but the whole design of the roof does indeed make for less storage than a squared off roof. But I am very impressed at how Airstream has made the best use of the available space.

  • @dougmanck4149

    @dougmanck4149

Sorry Andrew, just to clarify I was referring to the front bottom edges of the upper cabinets. The unnecessary curve prevents the placement of items fully forward (near the front edge) of the cabinet therefore reducing the overall capacity of the cabinet compared to a squared off front edge.

would ya recommend this model for two persons and two small dogs??? i am into buying an airstream at the moment, but have no idea which size to chose. think the mid size 604 (so called in germany) could be the right thing. the biggest one called 684 is awesome too, but its a real big rig on the road i think. how do ya see the pros an cons?

  • @andrewjditton

Buying a caravan is all about the people, not the caravan. It really is about what works for you. In the 534/Missouri you have to be sure you'll be happy with the wet room. I prefer the smaller size and single axle manoeuvrability over a 604/Yukon.

Thank you, Andrew. I love Airstreams and hope to get one. I toured a used 25 foot International Serenity a few months ago and I as surprised to find that it seemed so spacious inside. 25 ft (7.6m) is a bit long for me I think. I would prefer the length of this Missouri or a tad shorter for solo traveling. Do you happen to know how much clearance there is under the caravan? Or under your Airstream? That spare tire looks awfully low to the ground. I am concerned about going off-grid in the desert or forest area and running over a rock or tree stump and causing damage to the underside.

European Airstreams are very close to the ground thanks to the EU spec chassis. There are designed to run on metalled roads only. I'd imagine that US versions are better suited to off-grid towing.

hi, Andrew really good of you to do this in-depth walkthrough. I much prefer when you have the camera on the tripod than when handheld and you move around. I get a little nauseous. you said something about talking to your tyres which I did not understand. It is important to talk to your tyres when you have a new airstream I didn't understand that and forgive my ignorance. I like the fact that this has a wet room and a bedroom area and a living area. Love it. Another stupid question, could you live in an airstream somewhere like Norway in the middle of winter are they insulated? i love the airstream design I wonder if its possible to have an airstream basic and design my own units and cupboards. Looking at this Missouri I love it but I kept thinking pine would look rather nice give it soul. Anyway, thanks for making these great videos so interesting. I love airstream but the thought of towing terrifies me I don't know why? also thanks for explaining the cost and the need for a good tow vehicle that is really helpful. this is a very long comment apologies. so many questions so many ideas. You having definitely got me thinking.

  • @andrewjditton

Hi Bob, what people tend to do is mount an awning rail just under the line of the Zipdee awning. You'll see on all new UK Airstreams that the 'roof level' windows like I have on my older 532 near the entry door have been removed on the awning side to allow for this. People then tend to use inflatable porches like the Vango Airbeam to enclose the area. You *can* get a 'Safari Room' kit for the Zipdee but nobody in the UK has had success with this. I would love an enclosed porch awning for the winter, but my 'Series one' roof window prevents the rail.

Blimey Andrew you're up early. Jet lagged? Thanks for the info. I'm an English born Texan (been here in Austin for 30 yrs). My son lives in Aquitaine and my plan is to spend the summers in Bordeaux tasting the local beverages whilst overseeing the Grandsprogs. Winters back in the USA on the Gulf Coast and the Rockies. I have a 25FB Flying Cloud and could not find an enclosed awning here, which I would love during the winter. The other issue I fear is the wind gust rewind on my awning. The bloody thing rolls itself up when more than a zephyr hits it.I may have to engineer something freestanding from the roof. Enjoy your stay in the USA. Bob

Loved the video Andrew. No idea what 'normal' reviews of caravans are like but your style certainly works for me. The only question I have relates to what exactly the UK Airstream is. When I've looked at the US Airstream site there are lots of different trailers available. Now I understand the reasons why that's not possible in the UK for what is a small market for the company but I couldn't help feeling that perhaps a UK Airstream is an aluminium case fitted out with standard Swift interior. Am I missing out something here? As you know I'm no caravaner but am developing a passion for Airstreams. One note on the price thing - the $/£ exchange rate has changed significantly since 2009, and not in our favour here in the UK :(

I really enjoyed it, on both occasions, so thank you for a thorough and informative video, yet again. Now, if I may and I sincerely hope you don't mind, there are just one or two queries I have on the, so-called, Euro/UK range of Airstreams; 1. Any idea why 'our' Airstreams do not have the same awesome Fantastic Fan set up as the USA models? 2. It is a shame the Euro models do not have the storage in the rear bumper fitting, any reason for this? 3. Is it possible to have AirCon fitted to UK model Airstreams? 4. Will you be making a similar study of one, or other, of the larger models of UK Airstreams? Oh, and, as I do also love Marmite, I absolutely do LOVE Airstreams, although only as an aspiring owner at present! I am living the Airstream dream vicariously just now... 🤢 Thanks again sir... 👍🏻 😎 🐍

Hey! In order: 1. No idea why not. The 2007 Prototype 532 I used for Caravan Magazine did. But it was dropped in production models. Maybe because we have Heki roof lights, which they don't have in the US? 2. No idea why not. I am guessing because we have lighter nose weights so it could be seen as a compromise to stability. 3. Yes. A lot do have it. 4. Maybe! No plans as yet but we'll see if I can get my grubby mitts on one for a while ;@)

Great video , dont apologize about the sound and the quickly edited format - as it looked great with good sound for 98% of it and was BTW better quality and edited than an awful lot of videos on youtube. Unlike you I had a plain shirt on which has tea spat all down it as I was taking a drink as you mentioned the price. I will have to make sure I am wearing a plaid shirt in future as they dont show the tea stains. To be serious about the price a comparison can be made with a hobby of mine HIFI. You can pay huge sums for HIFI gear and indeed I have BUT I bought a pair of speakers and amplifier for what would be now serveal thousand pounds. But I still have them and they surpass the majority of audio you can buy today and Ive had them for 37 years and they still perform perfectly to this day. So if id added up the 5 cheap amps I could have had over the years I'm winning. "The price gets forgotten but the quality remains"

Totally did not sell me on the value for money argument. All caravans hold their value surprisingly well. Its shiny, its beautiful but it is a lifestyle choice. Plus its good to change up every 5 to 10 years. Insulation, electronics, beds, chassis, heating systems have all improved vastly.

When I traded in a Sterling Eccles after just three years I had lost £6,000 on it. Not so with the Airstream. And none of what you mention has changed in an Airstream, and that's what I like about them - you can replace bits and pieces as and when.

So this may be comparable to a Caravel in the US? No Fantastic Fans but it doesn't get very hot in the UK although that's definitely changing. I think we demand so much more in the US on every front and not sure that's so good. Yeah, 80,000 pounds is pricey for that model, at least in 2019 prices. $97k dollars will get you a 25' Int'l Serenity with separate lav and shower and many more options. Thanks for the review! Interesting to say the least.

Another Great Video, Thanks for taking the time, I love Airstreams but some of them have massive hitch weights, but there again that's not such a problem, I love the Sink and Prep area and the many storage pods every where, They are beautiful, would I buy one ? No because the price, In the UK all they have done is change the Dollar sign to a Pound sign and that has made them 30% more expensive than they are in the US, for a Caravan that is built by Swift Locally so why should we have to pay that 30% premium, And that's a shame because they are a work of Art and sale's will always be such a tiny % of the Market,

In 1978 my dad bought a pickup and an Argosy 24 (Argosy is an Airstream with a painted shell). We drove to Alaska and back to Utah. Then the trailer spent a lot of time in the western U.S. as home for my wife and I with our fist born for a few months, then my mom and dad lived in it as they went to various places for work, in addition to the things most people do to camp in great places on weekends and vacation when not being used as a home. I see many ideas that seemed new at the time, even Airstreams didn't have them, that are now common in the U.S. models and it seems in the U.K. models as well. What isn't as common in the U.S. models is the Alde heating system. My wife and I will hopefully be able to get an Airstream in the next 6 to 9 months and it looks like we may have to try to swing the extra financing for the model that does have the Alde system. We gave up on forced air in our house and currently rely on a radiant source and it only seems natural to want the same in our rv. Thank you for letting us see the current Airstream mindset at work in a different market than I live in. I really enjoyed this video and like the information you gave in it. If Swift will give you that long term loan, see if they could convince Airstream to do the same in the U.S. I know just the person that would make good use of it.

Thank you! I would anticipate that Alde heating will slowly become more popular in the US. It's only available on the Classic at the moment I believe? In the UK it was only seen in super top-end caravans. Now it is fitted to mid-range too. But you could be hanging on forever.... Good luck!
