Just took my new 17 GLI manual on its first long distance trip (800 miles) and got a very respectable 36.9 mpg cruising around 74 mph.

Just bought a GLI a week ago and I love it. It's certainly not perfect but dealers around here are taking about 5k off the sticker if you're a good haggler and do your research and at 24k new, then it's a great value. Opted for the manual cause I love driving stick, but the DSG transmission is just magic, I was honestly pretty conflicted and almost went for it. This is basically a great GT car. It's not a corner shredder, it has some roll and it's large for compact, but it's great highway cruiser and will tear up some twisty back roads, I love it as a compromise between sporty and practicality. Test drove a mk7 GTI S and it without question was a little quicker and a tighter more tossable handler, but it also had a spine shattering ride over anything other then perfect pavement and I say that as a mk4 GTI owner which has lowered, sport struts/shocks, strut tie bar, etc. I liked the handling and quickness of the mk7 over this, but couldn't see myself living with that stiff, rough ride on the daily. Maybe the SE's are smoother, but then you're getting into a 33k car that they'll only bring down to maybe 28 or 29 and that effects monthly's like crazy. I said I was going to leave mine completely stock besides throwing a short throw shifter in it(box is nice, but throws are way too long for my liking), but if I can get the go ahead from my dealer to chip it without voiding the warranty(HIGHLY doubt that one), I will definitely do that, and way in the future when my shocks and struts need replacing, probably will hit it with coilovers to lower it slightly and tighten it up without destroying the smooth ride. My only real complaints are the long shift throws, the hard plastic on the door cards at the top by the windows where you rest your arm and it could be a hair tighter in handling, but overall it's a very satisfying and fun to drive overall car. It's a little bit too, jack of all trades, master of none, but still it's an easy car to love and drive every day.

Have your alignment checked - I have 2016 GLI SE with the 6 speed also - drove great until I noticed I had shredded the insides of my front tires (9k miles). Took it for alignment and both front wheels were 1 degree pointing inward. After fixing that - car handles totally differently! Night and day difference! Also, Neuspeed makes a ‘black box’ tuner for this car - plugs into 2 sensors and tricks the ECU. Can remove and no one at the dealership is the wiser…

was the GTI MK7 ride that rocky? i'm guessing they're lower and/or a smaller so it feels that way? i got my 15' GLI couple months back also it's elegant looking and comfortable as a daily driver but definitely lacks the thrust i had expected.. of course the only route would be the tune but i'll do that after warranty expires =P

Nice review. That car actually sounds great ! Sort of reminds me of the Focus st sound. I agree with some other comments on here. VW should have this car on the same new gti platform/engine at this point. Still, pretty interesting car, especially if you can get it for under $25k (which I believe you can).

Actually I own the 2017 gli, I took the muffler off in the middle of the car to see what it sounded like and it sounds good, if you have traction control on and spin the wheels a bit the car will make that fart noise but it sounds amazing. The noise is just the engine going against traction control or something like that

Currently have an 09 GTI and looking to lease either a GLI or a base GTI (both 6speed). The decision is sooo tough. GLI's are leasing for cheaper and have sooo many more features than the base GTI's. Only advantages of the GTI's are the interior and updated engine.

Anyone can read EPA numbers which are meaningless. For example, the 2015 Passat was 35mpg highway, the 2016 was 38mpg and the 2017 is 34mpg highway. Same engine and transmission. So do what Alex does in Alex on Autos, and record your own fuel economy. So how is this different from Jetta SE or SEL? Does the GLI still have a trunk prop rod when the base Golf has the gas strut?

The 2016 got Apple Car Play and Android Auto, the 2017 dropped the bi-xenon HID package option for some dumb reason. Otherwise it's mostly the same, with other paint color options. Waiting for the MQB to hit the GLI. I do like the longer size of the GLI as interior space is a sweet happy medium between the average compact and midsize. But it would be nice ot have the chassis and engine upgrades from the GTI and A3.

Seriously, when are they gonna give this thing some love? Soooo much potential in the VAG group that's going begging here - a GLI should be fwd, affordable alternative to the S3, but it's not. Bring on the MQB platform, EA888 @ 230hp+ / 258 lb-ft, Performance Pack with LSD. Also the front end is ugly and they could shorten the boot to lose some swing weight.

I don't think they want to cannibalize their A3 and A4 lineup. This car kind of already is (though it's a big sleeper since so few know about it). Making it stronger and/or adding AWD would really make the a3/a4 for badgewhores only.

I don't like it 😭😭😭 I mean I don't know I just don't like the way it looks! It looks...plasticy and....dated. I have a 2014 GLI in my opinion that's the best looking GLI. Anyone else think that way?
