    Hey Chuck, just wanted to say thanks. Picked up a 2017 XT Touring today, and this episode was a big help in making the decision. Wanted to go with a white one, but my better half nixed it because of the saddle brown leather, so we ended up with Quartz Blue just like yours. I'm totally new to Subarus (been driving Mazdas for 10+ years), and I'm looking forward to your future videos!

    Dude, I WISH the Blue/Red Forester XTs came with a saddle brown interior. The black gets so hot in summer, and looks dirty easier.

    I live in Colorado, the land where EVERYONE has at least one Subie (literally, my town is only 500,000 people and we have the number one subie dealership in the country for volume), and after enough winters of driving my little front wheel drive nissan through a foot of snow, I picked up a 2017 Forester Pzev a few months ago, just the base model, and I love it. I go up to the mountains most weekends and I haven't had any trouble off roading on 4x4 trails, rides smooth on washboards and even smoother in town. I wanted a car that would do great in the snow and would be a decent family car once we have kids, and I think I found it. However, I will probably give it to my wife come winter and pick myself up an XT next year. Thanks for the review! I love this car.

    Great review for one reason. This guy is NORMAL, its refreshing because he isn't playing up to the camera on some big ego trip like so many people do on KZread. Well done, and also for the very honest review of a fantastic car. This would make a great all rounder for me in the UK.

    Hey! Great Video! Especially thanks for all the listings of the gear you use and I even clicked on the Subaru links as to what cool stuff is available. I have never owned s Subaru and I'm 6'4" and didn't figure I would fit! Thanks for including your height. I fit in VW's and not much else in the world of small cars and even mid size do I fit!!!! I've driven VW's most my life but I may have to check out the WRX over a Golf R. Again thanks for the work of adding all those links... wish more people would go to the trouble of doing that. Thanks for the review. We'd been looking and comparing in this size category. Many friends and family members drive Subarus which helped sway our opinion. We picked up our '17 2 months ago; the bronze with saddle interior. It'a a really great combo. It was just under 37K out the door and we we were able to negotiate several OEM added options such as roof cross bars and OEM trailer hitch. I'm a gearhead from way back and am loving the sport sharp setting and my wife is very happy in I drive. I didn't kill it while breaking in but didn't baby it either. I got some good info from your vid. Now for the bad news. Got rear-ended 2 weeks ago while stopped at a cross walk; new 17 year old driver. Not fun but no injuries. Long story short, about 7k in damage. It crushed the bumper down and pushed it and the trailer hitch forward and up into the trunk, probably a good 6 inches. Repair will involve massive re-do of body and floor; the whole rear of the car will come off. It's at a shop (in the north of Boston area) that specializes in Subarus. The owner/operator said he has done over 100 just like mine just in Foresters alone so I'm hoping for the best. It just sucks though because a car is only new once. Even though it was not my fault there was a ton of paper work plus many calls to both ins. companies. Anyway, can't wait to get it back and have more fun. Happy driving!

    Nice! I've been going through your videos since I just put a deposit down for a 2017 STI (as a replacement for my 2013 Focus ST). Funny seeing that your wife has the XT! My wife actually has the 2015 Forester XT Touring (Quartz Blue) as well. The sunroof is indeed awesome, and having the eyesight/adaptive cruise control has been great to have on our family road trips. The backseat room is also great for our 2yr old. Guess I'll have to keep an eye on your channel since we'll have similar garages soon and it seems like we're in similar situations. Thanks for the videos!

    Good vid Chuck! I just subscribed, I've watched most of your other vids as well and found them to be pretty helpful and your opinions seem to be spot on to what I've observed too! Now to the point... We have an eerily similar timeline... I also just happen to be 6'5" but a bit older than you. .... I had a 2009 STI 5 door, and traded it in on a 2015 STI last year. We bought a 2016 XT for the family earlier this year as well. I put a Nameless catback with 5" cans on my 2015 and removed the intake noise thingy when I put my Cobb intake on. (runs great and make some nice noise) Sounds a lot like yours. I take my Suby and my CBR954 to track days and really enjoy the hell out of them. I look forward to seeing the M3 on the track and maybe even seeing you out there some time! Keep it up!

    My 2006 Ford Escape is starting to nickel and dime my husband and I. We only have a 3yo son so we don't need a 3rd row. I've been so clueless on what my next vehicle/family vehicle should be (my husband drives a 2016 Toyota Tundra-he's a Toyota guy). I love to drive, and I love sporty looking vehicles. I also dislike how almost all of the new crossovers are putting in skinny Windows reducing visibility which isn't cool with me. I thought only the Germans were keeping big square Windows, but now I realize Subaru is keeping them, too. I was just looking at the Outback, but like your wife I wasn't digging the design and squashed feeling. After watching your video, I have fallen in love with the XT, sight unseen. It's the perfect sporty design in my opinion, add in the turbo and all of the awesome features, I am sold! Thank you so much for your video!

    Sweet. I do have a question... with your history of owning turbo charged vehicles, is there anything in the maintenance of them that you would recommend or highlight (i.e. oil change frequency...etc.)?

  • @TWRX_Chuck

    @TWRX_Chuck

    7 жыл бұрын

    I think it's important to follow the manufacturers recommendations. Subaru recommends 6k intervals for the XT, stick with that or more often, don't try and push the limits. I do it more often on my STI. I usually go 3-5k between changes on it. Also always use premium fuel as recommended by Subaru. Subaru has been really good to me in the past when anything has gone wrong too, so I believe they'd help you out as long as there is no abuse going on!

    Thank you so much for the video. I watched this three times just before and after I ordered my XT. Just got a question about the tires, did yours come with the bridgestone dueler H/L 400? Great review. looking at Outback vs Forester so very helpful, thanks. Looks like the seats -bolster/cushioning etc. have been improved for 2017? That has been my issue with Forester in past - the seats always felt super cheap - flat/ no bolstering compared to OB

    Keep in mind this is the turbo model, it may have a little sportier seat than the regular 2.5i. They added some decent bolsters, still not nearly "sports car" like seats, but they are better than before!

    Thank you for the great video. JUST started contemplating the Forester XT. Currently driving a 16' WRX which I have done tons of vids myself on my channel and just love it but am missing some of the room I had in my 13' Outback. The Forester XT seems like it'd give me best of both worlds (some fun speed and more room). I also am 6'5" but bigger (and more rounder, lol) than you. I imagine I'd be ok in this car. Might have to get out and see one at a dealer. I'd probably want to go top of the line with it as well with the Touring fully loaded. Thanks again, just a great video.

    Great review Chuck! I am looking at the Forester and love what I see. The one niggle for me is that the sunroof does not have a tilt position like the Outback (and most other vehicles for that matter). It is not a deal killer for me but I use it all the time in my Acura and I think I will miss it.

    Thanks ted! Yeah I hear you on the sunroof, its nice to vent it a little bit when needed. I think the bigger gripe for me is it comes from the factory with what seems like zero tint on it, so its super bright if you have the panel slid back. I don't think we've even used it once yet!

    Nice buy! My Protuned 2015 XT was super fun and felt much quicker than my current WRX. The CVT is weird, but actually quick enough to make the car fun. You just have to get over the sound and actually feel that the car pulls well. You should flash the Cobb ots tune for fun and see if you notice any difference (about 3 or 4lbs more boost)

    I actually really like the Mazda exterior styling and I thought the interior was nice. But the lack of engine options is what turned me away. I liked the turbo option on the forester. I think the escape ecoboost is the only similar engine option!

    Thanks for the review. I've tried the forester XT but finally settle on the 3.6R Outback. Better interior, smoother engine (regular gas too), also felt more planted in corner and unlike your wife I just like the wagon look better. I also found that there's more rear room for the kids. Still the forester is very nice, enjoy!

    This is the best review on KZread for the 2017 Forester XT. Partly because you answered a lot of questions that viewers had. Details. Details. I am looking at replacing our Honda Odyssey minivan with a smaller SUV but I want something fun. Well, more fun than a minivan anyway. Forester XT is on my top 5 list. My question...Did you look at anything outside of Subaru? What are your thoughts vs other competition at this 38K price point? MY TOP 5 LIST Subaru Forester XT Touring Acura RDX AWD Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited VW Tiguan 2.0T 4Motion (older version) Kia Sorento SXV6 AWD I live in Florida so the only time the car will see snow is on trips to NC but I want the driving dynamics of AWD in the heavy rain and flooding we have here.

    We looked at the Outback 3.6 and none of the others you mentioned. Our XT premium was right about $33k so the other things we considered were a little cheaper, CRV, Escape etc. But ultimately we liked the turbo option with the XT.

    CVTs are pretty interesting. They have a lot of potential, but some manufacturers are trying to make them like more conventional automatics which kinda defeats the point... Nice video, the forester xt is definitely one of the more appealing vehicles in the small suv market

    I own a 2016 Outback 3.6R Limited. I have no problem at all with the CVT, even though I consider myself a car enthusiast. I have driven it on steep mountain grades, with 4 people in it and their luggage, and I have had no problem at all. I guess it comes down to knowing what you're getting. I wanted a family car that was spacious, smooth, and quiet, and that's exactly what the Outback is. Not every car can be a sports or a sporty car. Many people, professional car reviewers included, get into a family car and expect it to perform like a different type of car.

    I felt I was pretty middle ground in this review. Understood why I bought the car and what it was for, never really took too much away from it. I know a lot of people that consider this car as a potential replacement to one of their "sporty cars" now that they have a family. I don't want those people getting the wrong impression. If you want a manual driving experience a CVT with paddle shifters will not satisfy that desire. It's a great car and we are enjoying it, glad you like your outback.

    I have a Cobb Accessport and run 93 octane. I hit 0-60 in 5.3 seconds with snow tires. The Accessport has 91 economy, 91 performance, and 93 performance tunes. Even with the 93 performance tune, if you have a significant other who drives in Intelligent mode, they may not even notice the tune. In Sport and Sport # modes it makes a big difference. I also have a Whiteline heavy duty adjustable rear sway bar and front strut tower brace. Some people lower their Foresters to get better handling, but I like the high ground clearance. The two mods I made almost eliminate body roll.

    Great informative video! I'm looking at a '17 Forester now and was wondering if you can tell me a bit more about the CVT transmission. I'm used to driving a manual '14 Impreza (base model). Should it be a smooth transition for me switching from the '14 Impreza to the '17 Forester? Thank you!

    I drive a manual WRX STI most days. The CVT takes a little getting used to but its not too annoying. I prefer driving manual, but for a transmission that does the "shifting" for you its not terrible. It's pretty smooth, comes with different driving modes sport/sport # etc, has paddle shifters that simulate gearing. Overall I don't hate it. I'd definitely test drive one though before you commit!

    Thank you for the fine review. i own an 09 Forester 2.5 X premium. Do you think when I get ready to change cars is the turbo worth the extra money and how about the Outback in the 2.5 or the 3.6 what are your feelings on those. I don't mind the wagon look. Why didn't you get the " Eye Sight" option on your Forester. I have a 16 Crosstrek loaner car with the "Eye Sight" and I like that option.

  • @TWRX_Chuck

    @TWRX_Chuck

    I had eye sight on a loaner Crosstrek as well. I just didn't really think it was worth it for the price. It's cool technology, but I didn't like that it was bundled with Nav and such as well. Regarding the turbo, I think its totally worth the cost. Even the turbo version isn't super speedy but its way more tolerable than the 2.5i. You also get a few extra goodies with the XT over the 2.5.
