The Subaru Forester has evolved over the past 19 years from a quirky-but-practical boxy station wagon to a more mainstream rounded-off crossover. It continues to prize spaciousness, safety, and practicality, all important factors for compact-crossover buyers.
The 2017 Subaru Forester received a mild visual face-lift as well as more equipment. It’s still a very sensible, practical choice for anyone who needs all-wheel-drive mobility in an everyday crossover. But is that enough for the Subaru to climb its way up the ranks of the ultra-competitive crossover class? Find out as we put Subaru’s best-selling model to the test in our latest Why Buy? video.

I've got a 2017 2.5 Limited and I got it because it has the best AWD system out there, it's easy to work on and it is practical for carrying things that don't require a van. Sorry if I'm frumpy. If. Wanted a sports car, I would have bought one. I have to be able to get through snow.

how about thousands of subaru owners around the globe with severe oil consumption problem(most of 2011-2015 and even 2015 2016, and get this 2017). Now, after class action law suit still having the same problems. i mean 2017 models burning a quart of oil per 500-1000 miles. We had 6 subarus in our family, but after 2011 the cars became garbage. Sad AF.

I have the 2017 Touring and we love this thing. We got it in black and had the windows (Drivers and Passengers) tinted to match the back windows The forester is great looking inside and out. And You get a lot more with this car for the money than other vehicles in its class

Just bought a 2015 FORESTER XT Limited with only 20,000 km! Absolutely love it 😍! Great styling, roomy interior, awesome stereo, and all that with the Subaru's infamous Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. And that "Turbo" Rumble is simply to-die-for! 2 👍👍 from this satisfied Subaru owner.

Other than the fact that the back seats DO recline (other than the base model), this review is pretty fair. The problem is that he did not really go over what subarus do better than any other maker of vehicles: symmetrical, full-time AWD... HUGE plus. It’s also worth at least briefly noting the high re-sale value. I have a 17 forester premium, and LOVE the way it drives. It has the practicality of a larger vehicle in most ways, but it drives like a sedan. I’d recommend a forester to just about anyone

  • @tommymas1
    @tommymas17 жыл бұрын

Not a well researched review. For starters, you can recline the back seats several inches. Also, he probably wasn't aware of the "S- Drive" modes since he didn't mention it. This Subie goes from 0-60 in 6.4 seconds and the XT has Active Torque Vector ing plus a sportier suspension. I have a 2014 XT Touring and can tell you it's very fast and very fun to drive. Lastly, to gloss over Subaru's full time awd is absurd. I have had 4 wheel drive vehicles for 20 years before getting the Forester (my first) and it puts all those to shame other than really hard off trail roads. It sounds like from the beginning, he is not a fan of Subaru, which is fine. Simply do a more objective review.

If they cant get this one small (but important detail) correct I think they are going to miss the big features (like the best all wheel drive system in the market BY FAR). I was right. I agree!! I also wish then when he would give us his "opinion", i.e. the way it looks, etc...that he presented it as his opinion, then to say it in a way as if it were a fact. I've been doing LOTS of research for an AWD vehicle....and I've finally narrowed it down to the Forester XT, and the Outback 3.6R Limited. I guess it'll just come down to how they "feel" when I drive them...and which ones works better for me. But, lord willing and the creek don't rise...lol...I hope to be a part of the "Subie" family in the not too distant future. :)

I have a 2017..2.5. My only cons: 1) I want a temperature gauge, not a idiot light that is blue when you start in the morning and, I'm assuming, will light red when you boil over. 2) Speaking of gauges, I want a analog (needle) gas gauge, not little dots that disappear. I have calculated each "dot" is about 50 miles. When you get down to 1-3 "dots" it's like watching the detonator of a time bomb! 3) Like every motorized tailgate I've ever seen, it's very slow and really only valuable when you're walking to the car and push the button 50 feet before you get there. 4) Let me manually open the tailgate EVEN WHEN IT'S NOT IN PARK! Finally, for some weird reason, it feels like it rides "on top" of the road instead of gripping it. This can get scary when your on a long curve and are moving at a good clip and hit some rough road or pot holes. It feels like you're bouncing on top and are not even making contact with the road(!). Other than all that I like the car!

Has the presenter even taken the Forester onto any twisty mountain roads, or was the opinion on city roads only? Put it in S mode and it's pretty darn fun with all that power. Of course there are a lot of body roll because how tall it is, it still has to obey the laws of physics.

I love my '17 forester XT! Did you find the 2 buttons on the right hand of the steering wheel that gives it mucho power and makes it really fun to drive. The handling is great, although quirky and the brakes are phenomenal. You never mentioned the x mode which is great for getting through unplowed roads and glossy icy roads. We are experiencing freezing rain here in the midwest, and blizzards which dump a lot of snow at times. With the ice tires (michelin ice X) I have, and the great all wheel drive. This is the car to have going through bad weather. Premimum fuel is not required, but recommended as it will give you about 30 more hp. I have been running 89 octane which works well, and starts good. Not that much power, huh? What are you driving? I rented a Nissan Rogue and that had about half the power that my XT has.

I actually like how the Forester looks very much. It is certainly not the prettiest (CX5 may be) but I doubt they wanted it to be and neither would their buyers. As far as fun to drive I wonder if that comment was in comparison to other SUVs like Rav4, CRV or CX5 or cars? I have had limited time in a Turbo but did not sense that it would not be fun to drive and I am pretty sure it will outclass most SUVs in class except CX5 for driving dynamics. Then there is no mention about off road ability which is certainly a compelling reason for Forester buyers and an area where it simply eclipses pretty much everything in and many out of its class. No manual is unfortunate but these new Subaru CVTs have been very compelling to the open minded yet many journalists make negative comments about it (and the looks) to the point where it is like fake news now. Very few have actually given the CVT a fair chance and found it actually quite good and have gotten over the simple fact that it just feels different while actually delivering better results. Someone already got the reclining seats thing but that really exposes a lack of knowledge by the reviewer. Maybe he is just an actor following a script and really knows absolutely nothing about this car or cars in general.

The '17 Forester XT is quite a bit different from the '14-'16. Most casual lookers won't notice much visual difference between them, but the refinement and features of the '17 blow the '14-'16 out of the water. I couldn't bring myself to trade our '06 XT w/ manual for a '14-'16 XT. The '17 XT Touring was able to convince me.

I love it. I think it's a lot fun and looks fine, but everybody is different. I appreciate the honesty of this particular point of view. It is exactly what it is... an average family crossover...doesn't seem like it's trying to be anything else. People tend to pick the car that's best for them. It's a lot of fun to drive with great handling and a little extra umhp. It's also comfortable, quiet and roomy. I think it all depends if you drive one everyday or if you review different cars every other day. Owner testimonials may differ from car reviewers. I'm an owner.

I purchased a 2017 Touring six months ago in USA and I’m overall satisfied. My concerns are a slow infotainment system which could be better, the USB ports are difficult to access, can I really trust the CVT (never had one) ,a 2014 owner had to have an engine replaced because it was burning too much oil. Lack of power when driving at higher speeds as in the highway. The ride is nice and smooth and I would say luxurious butI have nothing to compare it to. The interior is very comfortable and after 4000k miles and six months I am still exited to drive the Forester and love the conservative looks of the vehicle. I purchased this SUV because of Subaru’s reputation for reliability and AWD system which I really like. Everyone I have talked to so far loves their Subaru and I have not heard a bad comment yet from an owner. I have all the bells and whistles on this Touring model which is black with brown leather seats and do not regret my purchase so far. I do not agree with most points on this video. I realize this is not a sports car but it is FUN to drive. Thanks.....

Sally Dela cruz, Hi Sally. Yes, it is very quick especially when in one of the more aggressive driving modes. I always stay in "I" mode and find it quick enough for my needs. They say it can do 0 to 60 in 6.4 seconds and I believe it based on my experience. You should test drive one and when going 30 or so just look at the RPM gauge and try bringing it up to 3000 RPMs. You'll see how quick it is even at that RPM level.

I'd wait a year or two then for the next redesign as I think it's due soon. Of course if you like the 2017 design and features and can get a great deal maybe it would be worth it. Good luck.

I'd like to address the visibility issue, or what I'll call visibility creep. My '03 forester has excellent visibility (not quite as good as my old '78 Volvo wagon, which was like an aquarium). The new models with sloped and widened side panels reduce visibility quite noticeably.

You said pick top 3 quality when looking for crossover you pick Spaciousness, Safety and Fuel Efficiency then you said "But it doesn't matched up to other features of its competitors" This is because you live in an area where AWD is not your priority. For some is #1 AWD then #2 is safety #3 Resale. And if you happened to live in Alaska, Yukon, Nunavut or any of northern america territory then your second vehicle is Subaru period. But for those buyers that doesn't prioritize AWD, then FWD or RWD is more promising because fuel economy or/and spaciousness is the compromise of weight saving. If you remember the time Crossover started then you should know that Crossover vehicle is design for go anywhere but not to extreme. It prioritize winter and some off-road capability with a bit of comfort that pickup trucks don't have. It is a compromise between both world. First of Its commercials is a snow plow truck is following a Subaru and the rest is following the snow plow. Interior and exterior design of a car is more personal taste. Same when you decide the color or colour of your vehicle. There's reason why people buy the Pontiac Astek and I could even say some ugly cars that other people like. Like the PT Cruiser, New Cherokee, Prius, Cube, Leaf, Fiat 500X, Juke just to name a few but other people loves it. I don't even like the looks of the new Rouge or the front of the new CRV. Is that mean that if means people agree if I say that the NEW forester looks better than the new Rouge or the new CRV??? I have friends who has CRV, Forester, RAV4 and RDX and all have different traits in terms of handling. But to say XT is not fun to drive is over exaggeration. I could understand if you say you're not a fan of the Turbo because I am too - don't like the turbo lag. Or maybe your definition of fun is different from mine, The RDX if fun to drive because it's 3.5 V6 and you immediately feel the power but it feel like i'm way to high but try reversing with it and not using rear camera. To sum it up, it's unfortunate that your review seemed short from what it supposed to mean for it segment.

What inexpensive compact SUV is more fun to drive? I've test driven the most powerful models of its Japanese competitors, and it was definitely the most fun. if you can afford a Porsche or Range Rover Evoque or Audi or BMW, I'm sure those are more fun, but the Forester is way more fun than a CRV or Murano or RAV4 ( though the X1 is Front wheel drive, so maybe not the BMW unless you spring for an X3)

So, I have been looking to buy a Crossover/SUV and I decided to test drive the top 3 that I was interested in. Mazda CX-5, Subaru Forester, and Ford Escape. All top trim levels. The CX-5 had the best reviews for comfort, drivability, roomy styling and a 40/20/40 split-fold down back row. The Escape had the best reviews for it's infotainment system, controls, torque. viewing position and possibly every bell and whistle available. The Forester had the best reviews on it's utility, view, safety features and cargo room. Long story short: The Escape I banged my head on, just getting into the driver's seat and felt more cramped than my Mustang. The Mazda was depressingly dark and drab with very little appeal and sat too low for an SUV. The Forester? It shined! All those windows made the interior very airy. The handling was light and responsive. It took corners like they were nothing and rode over train tracks like riding on a cloud. The infotainment sound system was fantastic! Big whoop it doesn't have Apple/Android blah blah. The leather seats were wonderfully comfortable as was the leather wrapped steering wheel. It's not the most aggressive looking vehicle, but it fits like a glove and performs all my needs for years to come. Now to secure financing and get a good trade in value.

I bought a brand new 2015 Subaru Forester 2.5i Premium for $24,500.00 There is nothing on the market that is comparable for this price in size and quality, either a 4 wheel drive or an all wheel drive models in other brands cost about $8,000 more realistically. I wanted to lift my suspension about 2 inches and had a set of studded snow tires size 235 instead of 225, I had a local tire shop put it on and it's riding about 2 inches higher, and most people wonder why I would need a studded snow tires on a Subaru?!? Last winter I was in a snow blizzard on top of a mountain, the traffic came to a halt with nowhere to go and saw people with lifted 4x4 trucks turning around and heading back up the mountain, I followed them through an icy snow covered dirt forestry service road and came down the mountain and sat in a bar drinking beer and eating pizza with the guys I followed down watching the news about the people stuck up on the mountain.

You should at least add annotations to your video to correct the misinformation you put out with this video. The rear seats DO recline. It would also help clarify what you mean when you reference "its competitors", if you would actually say which vehicles you're talking about. As far as features, equipment, and materials, I find it to be exactly on par with its competitors; Ford Escape, Mazda CX-5, Honda HR-V, Toyota RAV4, Chevy Equinox, etc. Are you trying to compare it to the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes GLK/GLC?? And let's be honest. What CUV/small SUV is "fun" to drive? If anyone is buying these things for corner carving or high speed runs, they're doing it wrong. The Forester is more about ruggedness, utility, and offroad ability. Hence the name "Forester". The XT is for those of us who want more grunt with our utility.

I choses to lease a 2015 Subaru Forester Touring after doing much research on safety, build quality, resale value, etc. Had the car for 17 months now and have found the costs of maintaining this car to be very expensive. In the four years/96,000 km that I expect to put on this vehicle, the scheduled maintenance will add up to $1000's of dollars more than any comparable SUV that I've started to investigate. If I hit 96,000 km before turning the car in, I'll be hit with a $1226. service invoice for "regular maintenance. There are at least four other service checks that range between $390. and $650., plus extras and taxes. Why hasn't anyone reported on the cost of maintaining vehicles as part of ownership. This one is slipping under the radar and not realized before it is too late! This applies to ALL Subarus. Let's not get started about having to replace all four tires if you get an irrepairable flat tire after 20 - 25,000 km., which throws the AWD out of kilter.!! Otherwise, a pretty decent vehicle.

The Forester in Canada is a compact SUV , with the likes of Rogue , CX-5, RAV4, CRV, Escape for examples not a cross-over , X-mode in the Forester gives it a 50/50 torque split between front and back plus the superior the ground clearance (8.7 in.) gives the Forester the SUV classification of off-road capable , cross overs do not have a lockup differential like a traditional 4X4 truck based SUV. Compared to the main stream brand products offered the Forester is a sleeper in disguise in the performance category .The driver controlled ( "S" Drive ) allows the driver to customize the performance of the turbo and accelerator sensitivity , thus the performance of the Forester is subjective to the driver.

Being the owner of a 2015 Forester XT Touring with Eyesight, I can’t recommend this vehicle compared with the new CRV, unless you absolutely need the best AWD system without having to buy an expensive Range Rover or an unreliable Jeep. Both engine options have issues and are not very efficient. The infotainment system is horrible. It’s not yet on Subaru’s new global platform, which vastly improves the improves the Impreza and Crosstrek. It’s nearly the last year of this generation, which means it’ll be obsolete and look very dated in no time. The CVT is not very responsive and has many reliability issues. While highway mpg is decent, the city mpg is nowhere near what Subaru claims. I get 17/27, not the claimed 23/28.
