Bought a 2014 in the summer of 2013. Changed the oil in the spring and again in the fall. Less than 6000 kms., between oil changes. Always synthetic. It's 2019 today and I have never added oil between oil changes. I don't get it with the oil issue. My 7 year warranty is done or 70000 km and now I can buy the Cobb access port finally. I'm so giddy! Don't tell my wife. Catless J pipe, 4 inch intercooler. Just for starters. Time to play! It's fast now but like all of us it should be faster!

Had a brand new GTI about 20 years ago. On the first trip for an oil change, the BMW mechanic torqued the threads right out of the block. Cost me $300 to get fixed and always dripped afterwards. The car after that was a Civic. I put the valve in the day I bought the car and have been changing the oil MYSELF for the past 20 years!

Very nice video. Now I want a lift too. My 2011 Forester (non-turbo FB25) just went out of warranty and I was wondering if I should keep using 0W-20 oil (I use Mobil1 full syn.) I have seen some chatter around the web that the thinner oil is only recommended to improve Subaru's fleet mileage standard. Is there another weight oil that would better extend my engine life? Using very little oil now at 100,000+ miles even with the dreaded FB25.

Awesome channel man, just subscribed. I'm curious about your tire rotation. Around 7:30ish I noticed your front left tire looks more worn on the inside than the front right tire. Is that a camera angle thing or do you think that tire has just been worn more? Is it perhaps due to that wheel being the drive wheel for the front axle or more so due to yalls driving habits? Thanks again for the indepth look at this vehicle man, it's awesome!

Thanks for the video, I currently looking at long distance purchasing of either the XT or WRX premium here in outback Australia. Closest dealer is 700 kilometers. Have you towed anything in either car's and know the tow limit? How much is the difference in road clearance height of the XT vs WRX? Reason being I may have to drive over dead kangaroo's.

Nice review, you do a great job. My parents and I have owned a total of five Subarus. Two Forresters (2004) my parents bought, two Outbacks (2014, 2015) my parents bought, and a 2013 Legacy I bought. Of the two Forresters, only one started burning oil (it was the 2.0 L turbo unit) at 140,000 miles. That is not great but not horrible. I have been the unlucky one with the 3.6L H6. It burns 1.5 quarts every 2.000 miles - which is not enough. It started burning at 47,000 miles. I change the oil every 5000 like you. Subaru claims that now i should put in 6.9 quarts (not 6 quarts recommended) and burn through the extra oil until the next oil change. I burn 1.9 quarts and check the oil level religiously as I know I will have to refill it once before 5000 miles. Subaru says it is good for the environment - my car is definitely not as I put out a ton of burnt oil constantly. I barely passed emissions last time. If it fails next time, I will have a stronger case for an engine replacement.

you know I think the oil consumption thing is weird. every wrx I have owned had sucked up oil like crazy. ej20 ej25 but now my fa20 is fine. I think people just don't pay attention to their oil till it's too late. esp when the dealership tells you 6k+ miles between oil changes(that's what mine says anyways). oddly enough my 15FXT and WRX doesn't consume oil at all. great channel. subscribed!!

Hey Man. Quick question. I am strongly interested in the Forester XT. I am glad to hear that you are getting 27 mpg in commuting. From a fuel tank, how many miles of cruising range does the XT get? From an empty tank, how many gallons due it take to fill up? Do you have to use premium or does regular work? Sorry for the huge amount of questions but I feel an owner will be more honest that a dealer. Thanks Bud!

I drained it hot and let it drain for about 20 mins. Any ideas? It's a 2018 XT with less than 20k on the od.

The Ford EcoBoost has the same problem, because of block ventilation. As the oil circulates and blows out the PVC valve it shoots oil directly into your intake and can cause oil loss. this can be fixed with an oil separator catch can that separates the air from the oil that goes back into your intake and returns the oil back to your crankcase.

Is it a stock factory rack? I have a 2017 Forester as well and am thinking of adding one to mine. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

This is why I drive since new a 2009 Mazda 3 s hatchback 2.3 with 5 speed auto and 195,000 miles. I have been dumping money lately for suspension parts at all four corners and a trans module. A trans module is not a rebuild. At the end of the last 5000 mile oil change interval I got back from a 2000 mile Marathon trip in 50 hours. Car ran like a champ. Did not burn or leak a drop of synthetic oil.

I have a Forester XT 2013. It does some short noise (like something breaks) that can also be somewhat felt in the following scenarios: * When I turn left, then press breaks a little (the car is still driving) and then press the gas again. The noise seems to be coming only from the from left side in this case. * When I drive, then press the breaks a little and then press the gas again. The noise seems to be coming from the front (not from a specific side). Do you have any idea what is the meaning of this noise?

I have a 2015 Forester. It consumes about 1 quart between oil changes. I am at 55,000 miles. Didn’t start consuming till about 20,000 miles. I did a proper breakin and I always wait for the engine to warm and idle down before I load the engine.

Thanks for the vids mate, always interesting. Does changing your own oil have any effect on the warranty of the vehicle? Down under at least, we would have to take our Subbie in every 6 months for a service to maintain the warranty.

No sir, its against the law in the US for manufacturers to require you service your car at the dealer. So you can do it at independent shops or at home. You just have to prove it was done if a warranty issue comes up.

Good video. But I want to ask some questions. Was the car driven before the oil change to warm the oil? Was the oil filler cap opened before you release the old oil on the bottom of the engine? Why do you nt remove the old oil filter during the drain of the old oil? By the way your garage looks tidy.

  • @TWRX_Chuck

Yes it was warm, I did pull the cap to release any vacuum. I was less thorough in this video because I did a video on the oil change process a few months back. I didn't remove the filter while draining the oil because the car was on the lift and I couldn't reach it if I'm honest! Thanks for watching!

2017 foresters come with a plastic door over the drain plugs. Only on non turbo if I'm not mistaken. It is just push clips to remove it. Working for subaru and my wife having a 2016 wrx. I find the FA20 takes around 5.5 quarts to have it at full. The recommended 5.4 never seems to be enough.

If I may recommend I use it for my mercury Milan v6 and that is marvel mystery oil it's awesome cleans your fuel lines unclogs injectors and gives proper lubrication to the fuel which in reality your car needs and today's fuel doesn't have that anymore since it has ethanol which I believe they use in the fuel to remove to help keep the moisture out

Hi.Chuck (Charles?) - here in Australia I’ve owned 10 Subarus over 40 years (Leone, Liberty, WRX, Outback and Forester) my 1997 Forester got to $425k before the camshaft seized - never had oil/coolant level or head gasket issues and all these vehicles had high kms - only updated due to lifestyle changes - I stopped at 2013 models because of the CVT issues around 60k-100k for the 2013-2017 Forester/XV/Impreza models - I believe the CVT has been Improved for the 2019 onwards? It’s five years since your video and was wondering how the XT is now? John in SA

Unfortunately I am seeing Oil Consumption issues on the Impreza 2013 (Canada) now that we are approach our 5th year. The last two oil changes (at 7500 km each) we lost 1 litre of oil each change (down to first notch on the dip stick. Typically all city driving and oil change is done at the 6 month mark. Subaru recommends 6 months or 10,000 km (which ever comes first). Subaru also claims that it is ok to lose 1 litre of oil for 2000 km. So we are off to our first oil consumption test.
